technically this doesn't count... but as i mentioned before tensions rose within their relationship around august/september 2023, so around the time that the autumn classic international was going on
mid-september was when everything blew up and they had a huge argument, so basically as the competition was happening...
i can imagine them attempting (and failing) to avoid each other during the competition, and arguing whenever they weren't competing
this is definitely when fans started to notice something was up between them
they didn’t start dating until october 2023 so their first OFFICIAL competition as a couple would have been skate america 2023
although they just ended a huge fight, nothing major changed with the way they acted with each other
they were used to saying ‘i love you’ to each other due to their closeness, and they had already been watching each other’s programs for awhile
but one thing was different, there was a lack of that awkwardness with each other, the silent hesitance of going too far that their interactions seemed more than just friendly
though they were careful about the cameras, they were more quick to hug each other, hold each other’s hands, and act more casually like a couple
since they both attended the same grand prix events, fans got so many new cute interactions from the two and compilations quickly popped up on tiktok
you can also expect pep talks beyond pep talks to one another to calm their nerves before the competition
also now that they were official, obviously the us team all knew about them. they hoped that the teasing from everyone would stop now that they figured themselves out but no... it gets ten times worse

BUT. life updates!: i graduated hs (fucking finally (oh also i had a speech 😛), i watched off campus and lord have mercy hallelujah if i make another au for garrett graham and never finish it just shush pls, and yeah IDRK honestly but it’s summer and i do have a job but we open in the afternoon so i do have a lot of time to write when i get the inspiration!!! i’m starting college next year so i already know that will kill me and my activeness on here but i promise i will post every once in awhile 😭😭 i will try to finish some things for ilia’s au and have them posted something within the next few days!

mila and ilia both grew up in figure skating so they were very well aware of each other's existence
they frequently passed each other at competitions and occasionally had conversations, and even posed for photos that their parents forced them to take (like parents do)
for years they really only just crossed paths and rarely interacted further than small talk and congratulations
until!!!! ilia landed his quad axel at the u.s. figure skating classic, and following the mens singles skate she went up and congratulated him
they ended up talking for a while until ilia's dad pulled out his phone and had them take a quick picture, which was later posted by ilia
after ilia posted the photo on his story, mila reposted and twitter went lowkey insane
i mean the two are like insanely talented skaters and especially at 16 and 17 in 2022
they're bound to have fans go crazy over the small collab
after this competition the two started talking a lot more
at first it was just casual conversations, chatting about how they feel about the season so far, whatever competition is coming up next, spoiling their future programs, etc.
and then it turned into goodmorning/goodnight texts, exchanging phone numbers, personal conversations, and eventually facetime calls
within a short time the two were like best friends, they wondered why they never got close before since they got along so well
now when ilia went live mila always made an appearance, whether it was her just commenting and ilia noticing right away, or her joining as a guest and yapping for hours
by april 2023 they were genuinely tied to the hip even when they weren't with each other, they texted whenever they weren't busy, finding a way not to let it interfere with their practice and hectic schedules
this is also around the time people started spreading dating rumors, making cute compilations of them and the fans defended themselves by saying they just love their friendship but we all know...
their relationship was very confusing at this point, they didn't even really know what they were but they knew it wasn't the right time to figure it out
around the beginning of the 2023-24 skating season (maybe like august/september) there was a lot of tension in their relationship, lots of arguing and miscommunication, and the fans could definitely tell
it all blew up like mid september, they had this huge argument which basically ended in them confessing how they felt and turns out magically that's what they needed the whole time!
they try to take it slow, go on a few dates before calling it official, but ilia was so impatient he literally just came over with flowers and her favorite candy and asked to be her boyfriend (yes he specifically asked that way)
obviously she said yes, they both knew they wouldn't wait any longer
they wanted to keep it pretty private for awhile, see how things go and have fully privacy before sharing it with everyone
fans definitely knew in a way, but most just weren't actually expecting them to be together for real
the first few months together and during competition season is stressful but they survive, and they enjoy their privacy for awhile
but ilia just could not wait to tell the world how much he loved his best friend
mila was hesitant on going public, worried about the response from fans, but after ilia begged for hours to hard launch she finally said yes but to wait for valentine's day
eventually they hard launched on valentine's day in 2024, and the figure skating community BLEW UP
ever since then they've been a fan favorite couple
they're always making tiktoks, practicing together, even doing interviews together occasionally, but still manage to keep a sense of privacy

ilia, hearing the sound of skate guards approaching on the concrete floor, looked up out of curiosity and spotted mila and her father walking towards them. the sight of mila half-dragging her father made him laugh under his breath, barely making a sound.
"hi, ilia?" she waited for his response, though he had been looking at her before she even spoke.
"yeah?"
"sorry," he could tell she was nervous just by the way she half-sigh, half-laughed, "i just wanted to say what you did out there today was incredible, i never thought i'd see someone actually land a quad axel."
this caught roman's attention, suddenly more interested in the interaction in front of him instead of whatever was happening on his phone.
"oh, thanks! someone had to do it you know,” they shared a laugh at his comment, easing the awkwardness of the conversation. “but seriously thank you, you did great too.”
a few minutes later they were fully in conversation, with roman and dean talking now as well. eventually, their fathers decided to get the two kids together for a photo which later ended up being posted by ilia, which mila then reposted.

i'm thinking like every time they practice together ilia pushes her to do one backflip and she always caves in (she swears just once)
