she does not understand his thanks. it comes in waves , pure sincerity with each word. & yet he apologises to her . her : a girl who had not given any warning as to his well being. the bandages are unfurling from her palms. she has set the ointment of her own creation onto his injuries. ❛ this will sting. ❜ but the warning occurs as she’s placed it on his skin , useless in any sort of preparation. ❛ there is no need to thank me , this is merely what i am to do for the time being. ❜ as recompense for the saving of her own life , the former slayer works at the estate. debt is not something she wishes to carry ; thus she will repay it.

the pain is unexpected, softness departing his features for a brief second, eyes widened as a guttural groan escapes his lips. he’d rather withstand the medicinal burn to losing his arm to a demon’s assault, true, but it still hurt. the burst of pain & surprise dissipating, more manageable, tanjirou’s expression lessens into a mere wince. the gratitude remains, hanging in the air like a blurry fog. ❝ still, you save people with your strength. that’s pretty amazing ; i surely can’t do anything like that. ❞ his memories from the forest flood back, blood seeping down his limbs, ribs cracked as if made of eggshell. his power saved others, yes, but had to kill in order to do so.

he blinks at the question, gaze lifting to the ceiling as he recalls the events of that final fight. ❝ no, i don’t think so. i got lucky, getting out with just a scratch. how are the others ? ❞

yukako seems sad. perhaps he’s overthinking, a recurring reaction which prodded at tanjirou, especially when worrying over friends or nezuko. still, he can’t seem to logically explain away the melancholy air currently surrounding her. he was used to a sort of fieriness. at times, it came across as a gentle candle, alighting a room, warm, glowing. alternatively, she could also present herself as a raging firestorm, threatening to swallow any demon with ferocious brimstone. the tension makes him nervous, though he can’t put it into words. electing to alleviate any ill feelings, he approaches with an amicable smile, messily tearing an bread bun before offering the larger half to the elder slayer. ❝ you look hungry. here, i made it this morning. ❞ / @ymagishi.

some tanjirou verses for your writing pleasure :

- naruto : okay but consider that the demon slayer corps existing in the land of demons. they’re a sect of ninja that left behind the endless power struggle of being in the shinobi villages & instead, dedicated their lives to the priestess & stopping demons. they travel all around the world, slaying demons which may crop up. of course tanjirou is much of the same in this verse, still traveling with nezuko & looking for a cure. has an innate strength in suiton & katon.

- modern : it’s gone into pretty deeply in the omakes but he’s just a normal high school student whose family runs a bakery. he wakes up at 3am to bake bread, helps take care of his siblings, studies a lot, & gets in trouble due to his earrings. a lot happier of a life, tbh.

- alternative modern verse : everything is exactly the same except the demon slayer corps & demons exist in the modern world. after school, he’s a demon slayer, protecting others by killing demons. for simplicity’s sake, nezuko is probably a normal human in this verse. his drive is rather, the knowledge that his abilities can save others.

double blink, the praised demon slayer finally returns the land of the living. the nurses at the butterfly estate did ask he exercise caution for the next few missions. yet, his latest scrap was unexpected, a surprise attack in which he, injured or not, had to intervene in. no broken bones, from what he remembered, although the demon tore tanjirou’s arms into fleshy ribbons. his kill was secured, thankfully, but a fiery scream pulsed through his arms. ❝ —— i’m sorry to be back so soon. thank you so much for the help ! i would be in pretty bad shape if you hadn’t shown up when you did. ❞ / @chakrabit.
