Why Lena doesn’t figure out Kara is Supergirl - psychoanalysis

A psychological reason for which Lena doesn’t realize Kara is Supergirl is that when faced with two similar objects the human mind likes to categorize and therefore looks for differences over similarities, especially when similarities are obvious.

Theory

Consider this thought exercise, imagine two groups of similar looking people but with completely different biology. It would probably make sense that as an observer you would try to find the smallest differences between these two groups in order to be able to tell them apart. It happens often in the world, it is part of the human developmental psychology. It helps infants be able to tell apart similar faces, and it perfects in time based on expertise through synaptic pruning.

In other words it is what makes bird enthusiasts able to figure out which birds are female or male in the same species. Or how car enthusiasts are able to tell apart similar cars. If you’re interested look up the FFA (fusiform face area) and it’s role as visual the expertise module, there are many neuro scientific studies on it.

This categorization becomes increasingly clear when the sense of me vs them in social psychology comes into play.

Lena’s Case

Now applying the same theory to Supergirl TV. Oftentimes we hear Lex’s emphasis on how kryptonians look like humans and how they are actually different from them. Us vs Them. Would it be plausible to believe that Lena growing up in the Luthor household, bearing a scientific mind would be rather inclined to look for dissimilarities rather than similarities between supergirl and other humans? Please consider her first invention in National City, the alien detector device. A little device designed to highlight these dissimilarities, coded by Lena herself. She is a scientist her expertise lies (also) in telling humans apart from aliens, biologically, not visually.

Taking it a step further. Would it be plausible that when faced with Kara and Supergirl, two people similar in so many ways (driven, ethical, stubborn, blonde, blue eyes) that she would overlook the similarities and try to find the slightest of differences in order to latch on to some small sense of security by categorizing Supergirl as “the other”.

(I could also expand on how Kara explains that Supergirl is what she can do and not who she is, further emphasizing my point on obvious emphasis on biological “otherness” over appearance) yada yada but i won’t :))

It does all boil down to cognitive dissonance and Lena’s will to overlook the similarities if we were to simplify it all. But I just thought it would do the story some justice if I could explain how neuropsychology supports that these simple disguises are more effective than one might think.

I believe that one of the reasons why we believe that Kara/ Supergirl’s disguise is terrible, and why we couldn’t understand how Lena didn’t figure it out, it’s because the show was made for us to see both Kara as Supergirl and Supergirl as Kara.

But we forget that Lena did not have this privilege. To her Supergirl was this cold, subdued-anger, ultimate judgment, world on her shoulders figure/symbol. Who had an ever present frown, entitled attitude, brawn for brains, and challenging speech to her enemies.

While on the opposite side was Kara. Smiley, goofy, oblivious, clueless about dangers from both the world and the baggage Lena has.

The only time you see Kara frown (Lena is either not looking) or it’s directed to people who already know who she is eg: Alex, J’onn, Winn and Lena after finding out.

The only time you see Supergirl be goofy, smile or show any hint of personality it’s never near Lena s2-s4. Only towards Alex, J’oon, kids, Winn, Mon-El, Nia, Brainy, M’gan.

Where is Sam season 4 and post-Crisis?

I know it’s been brought up before, but Sam is a core relationship and person to Lena’s past. They are best friends “sisters” even and I refuse to believe her disappearance isn’t a massive plot hole. Let’s consider a couple of key moments Sam should’ve been brought up.

First and foremost season 4 Lex being released from prison?? Hello, your best friend’s maniac brother is on the loose, maybe a phone call would work. The irony of Lena snapping at Kara for not being there for her while Alex and even Supergirl were was also not lost on me.

Second, Lena finding out Kara is SUPERGIRL!!! To set the scene Lena finds out the her best friend is a kryptonian while Sam, her other best friend, had a wild awakening for being one as well a year before! There is literally no one better to talk to about whatever she was feeling than Sam. Moreover not only was Sam a kryptonian and knew and saw Supergirl’s struggles, but Sam was Reign!!! and for a while both Kara’s friend and Supergirl’s villain. She had front row seats to Supergirl’s hypocrisy and her poorly played split personality. To top it all off Lena had lied to Sam for her own good in order to protect Sam and because she doesn’t really trust people which was obviously not the same situation as with Kara but still, we can see some similarities that they could’ve talked about. But instead of doing so, Lena builds an AI puts it in Eve Tesmacher’s body OF ALL PEOPLE to serve as her emotional support/sounding board. (I refuse to believe that actually happened)

Third, Lena brings Andrea back into her life?! If you ever had a best friend I’m sure you’d have some reticence before allowing said best friend to bring a toxic lying ex back into their lives for god sake. Like no matter what, that decision should’ve been double checked. I love the Lena backstory with Andrea it really thickens the plot, but if I was Sam I would’ve given Lena a quick reality check on why that was a bad idea.

Fourth!!!! Post-Crisis!!!! Okay so reality changed and let’s say maybe Sam and Lena never met. But Lena kept her memories, and as (a platonic best friend according to the writers) Kara checks/makes sure that Lena remembers their complicated history first thing after saving the world, why on earth prime wouldn’t Lena do the same with Sam if they are so best friends and so platonic. But let’s say they indeed didn’t meet, I have even more questions. How did the Harun-El come to life? Was Sam Reign? Did they save her and then just moved on? how did they even realize she was Reign. And if Sam was not Reign how in the world did she get to Earth and what in the world was with the witches of the cult popping up 5th season. Will Sam become Reign? is she dormant? I have so many questions that Lena, Alex, Brainy, Kara should have too!

Side notes to that argument I have:

Lena saying every one of her friends has betrayed her in the past when Sam never did

There’s some sort of excuse the writers could give, like if Lena already had a best friend that was there for her in every sense of the word while making big sapphic eyes at Kara and going through a sapphic tragedy when Kara lied to her then well that couldn’t have been platonic could it?

Ruby and Esme. There’s absolutely no way Lena did not think of Ruby especially when Esme came around I just refuse to believe so.

What's Wrong with 5B?

(aka: how It’s a Super Life ruined everything)

The premiere of season 5 was simple. Kara fucked up, felt deeply sorry for it, and revealed her secret to Lena (driven solely by her guilt) after far too long of gaslighting her. Unfortunately, it was a bit too late, Lena was already (rightfully) pissed and about to exact a(n outsized) revenge about it. Easy peasy.

We see Kara struggle with it a little. She gives Lena the superwatch, looking super guilty the whole time. She brings Lena international treats, talks to Alex about how she’s nervous about interacting with Lena. But she seems to have underestimated the damage she’s caused - and Lena is going through a major disillusionment.

Both of which are mostly in character from my perspective. But with the caveat that, I knew the basic summary of the Rift before I watched the show. So those were moments the characters were already building to in my head. (I know some people think that Kara’s reaction in season 3 was out of character, or that Lena’s reaction in 5A was out of character, and those are valid opinions that are worth exploring! If I watched the show unfold live, maybe I’d be in that camp too.)

We then see Lena’s betrayal and Kara scrambling to pull Lena back from the edge into an anti-villain arc. The Crisis happens, Kara visits Lena, and Lena calls Kara out - “What did you think would happen when you came here? That you'd tell me everything in a fit of selflessness, even if it meant that I knew how you betrayed me, and then I'd just keel over and forgive you?” Kara still knows she did something wrong, and vows to never do it again.

Aaaaand then It’s A Super Life (beloved/beloathed) happens.

I really liked the episode the first time I saw it. I was a supercorp shipper who hadn’t read a single fic. And on its face, I mean, they dedicated the entire 100th episode to the relationship between Kara and Lena and trying to repair it. It failed, sure, but they'd make up eventually (again, I was spoiled).

But that episode was really about absolving Kara. It was a bizarre conclusion. Kara no longer had fault, because any reality they tried out would’ve failed. … which makes no damn sense. Even if no reality could work (I’m skeptical), Kara didn’t know that at the time she made her decisions. She still has fault for the harm she knew she was causing (even if it happened to work out better than the alternatives she didn’t know about).

I think this is a narrative shift. This isn’t just about the in-universe “Kara believes she’s absolved”. This is a writer's ploy to change the narrative and make the audience think that Kara didn’t have fault. Writing this as a character flaw might’ve worked, maybe, if they had Kara reexamine her assumptions later. But as a narrative? … the shift fell completely flat.

The rift was canceled at this point. Suddenly it was no longer the story of two people’s flaws interplaying in the worst possible way. Suddenly it was: Kara is right, Lena is wrong, let us never speak of it again.

It makes everything that comes after really grating. The end of 5x19 (where Kara goes “maybe I’m ready to forgive you now” and shakes Lena’s hand) feels completely empty, because there’s no acknowledgement from Kara that she fucked up - a fact she fully understood at the beginning and middle of the season! It bleeds into season 6, where we never see Lena hash things out with the superfriends or with Kara post-return. It makes the finale (Lena’s “You made me a better person”) fall flat. At this point multiple people in the fandom have pointed out that it’s Melissa’s acting that is Kara’s saving grace (though even that has limitations, as many of us felt with Sadie). But Kara as a character really suffers - and with it, her relationship with Lena, and Lena's arc - because the writers did not make a convincing argument for their shift.

The hero’s always right, I guess? The main character can’t have major flaws? (I hope someday we learned what instructions they were getting in the writing room 😂)

For my own sanity, I have a whole slew of conversations(/arguments) in my head that I place into season 6 to fix some of this (as well as making Mxy a liar who was trying to make his friend feel better, rather than those other timelines being real). But while they’re canon-compliant… they aren’t canon. What we needed was something on screen to make the relationship shine again, to have Kara revisit why her rationale absolving her in the 100th episode didn’t follow at all, and have Lena work through her issues with Kara and the rest of the superfriends. But we didn’t get that.

Which means everything post-100th will always feel wrong to me.
