this is legendary and changed my psyche 11 years ago ! böbby hïll åşćěñđįņģ !!
So recently I watched "Marie Antoinette "band I noticed her hair was pink in one scene and I wonder how someone made their hair pink in the time
The short answer is: with colour powder.
The long answer is: Powder wasn’t only white, even though now we immediately think of white as the only fashionable colour to powder hair or wigs.
“Abdeker: Or, the Art of Preserving Beauty” lists these colours for powder: brown, fair, grey, flesh colour’d, rose colour’d, cherry colour’d, black and white. Also literature and other recipes books mentions lavender, blue, red, yellow and orange hair powder.
The white powder could be mixed with other colour pigments according to the person’s skin, so a little bit of yellow or brown could be mixed to avoid the absolute white. In the first part of the 18th century dark hair powder was used for mourning, and later on dark shades were for morning hours and white for nigh time events.
As well as nowadays, the colourful shades were more for fashionistas than for regular people: Marie Antoinette made an orange shade briefly popular and the politician Charles James Fox wore blue hair powder.
when does the ㅅ/ㅆ consonant sound like "sh" i've been confused on this for a while haha
Dependant on which Hangul characters are combined, the pronunciation has the peculiar habit of changing. Unfortunately, this is just one of those things you have to learn.
There are a variety of rules which include:
T-stops
ᄉ followed by ᄒ
“S” to “SH” sound with ᄉ
“L” and “R” sound for ᄅ
ᄅ and ᄂ combinations
Silent 겹받침 (double consonant)
Random CH sound
Soft 하다
Hard 하다
Shift to hard sound after and before ᄒ
But for now, let’s focus on “S” to “SH” with ㅅ
Honestly, this is pretty simple but just requires you to learn it.
When ᄉ is combined with ᅵ, ᅧ,ᅣ, ᅭ, ᅲ the “S” changes to a “SH” sound.The sound REMAINS as “S” when combined with ᅡ,ᅥ,ᅮ, ᅩ, ᅳ, ᅢ, ᅦ.
So the combinations are as follows:
시 is pronounced “SHI”
셔 is pronounced “SHEO”
샤 is pronounced “SHA”
쇼 is pronounced “SHO”
슈 is pronounced “SHU”
The same applies for ㅆ when combined withㅣand is pronounced with a “SH”. Like in the word 씨, it is pronounced “SHI”.
The “S” remains in these combinations:
사 is “SA”
소 is “SO”
서 is “SEO”
수 is “SU”
스 is “SEU”
These rules mostly exist just for the ease of pronunciation. It would be a mouthful to say “SYEO” or “SYU”, so it’s easier to just say, “SHEO” and “SHU”.
Examples:
쇼핑 (Shopping) is pronounced “SHO-PING” not “SYO-PING”
샴푸 (Shampoo) is pronounced “SHAM-PU” not “SYAM-PU”
셔츠 (Shirt) is pronounced “SHEO-CHEU” not “SYEO-CHEU”
Trick to remember: Why is it “SH”? Because it’s a Y. (ㅣ just likes to stand out.. )
There are more rules of pronunciation, so if you would like me to explain any of the others, be sure to let me know. Or if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
Hello :) when do I pronounce the letters ㅅ ㅈ ㅊ as t and ㅂ like m? And why do we pronounce them like that? Thanks! :)
Dependant on which Hangul characters are combined, the pronunciation has the peculiar habit of changing. Unfortunately, this is just one of those things you have to learn.
There are a variety of rules which include:
T-stops
ᄉ followed by ᄒ
“S” to “SH” sound with ᄉ
“L” and “R” sound for ᄅ
ᄅ and ᄂ combinations
Silent 겹받침 (double consonant)
Random CH sound
Soft 하다
Hard 하다
Shift to hard sound after and before ᄒ
But for now, let’s focus on the T-stops.
When ᄉ,ᄌ, ᄎ, and ᄒare used as 받침 (the ending consonant) they create a “t’ sound. The same applies to ᄃ and ᄐ, but they already have a ‘t’ sounding pronunciation so it’s to be expected.
A ‘stop’ is when the airflow is abruptly cut off with the throat, tongue, or lips before it can be completely articulated. So when a consonant is acting as a T-stop, it is not a harsh “tee” sound but it instead has close relation to how ᄃ (d/t) is pronounced.
Examples:
이것 is pronounced 이걷
늦게 is pronounced 늗게
However, when any T-stop consonant is followed by “ᄋ”, the T-stop is cancelled! This is because “ᄋ” has no phonetic value when acting as first consonant, so it is instead replaced by the previous 받침.
Examples:
것이 is pronounced like 거시
받아 is pronounced like 바다
ㅂ followed by ㄴ
As for ㅂ sounding like ‘m’, this is one of those irregulars that exists for ease of pronunciation. So whenever ㅂ is followed by ㄴ, it is pronounced like ‘m’. This is usually due to the positioning of the mouth and its ability to quickly articulate two adjacent consonants correctly without difficulty.
There are many more irregulars and rules that dictate pronunciation, so if you would like me to explain any of the others, just let me know. Or if there is anything else you want to know, don’t hesitate to ask!

January Divorce Filing: Pros and Cons for the New Year
By: E.A. Putman
January is colloquially known as "Divorce Month." It sounds harsh, but it fits square in with the other things we resolve in January. We resolve to lose weight. We resolve to eat better. We resolve to stop drinking (Dry January, anyone?) We resolve to do or not do the myriad of things we said we were going to do. So, it's not uncommon for people to resolve to make the difficult but necessary decision to let go of a failed marriage.
But why January? I’m not sure as my office is often very busy in December. Some people prefer not to enter the new year carrying any old burdens. However, others may focus on spending time with their kids during the holidays or managing their finances, and they want to avoid any stress that might dampen their holiday spirit. As a result, January has traditionally been the time when many finally decide to file.
"Knowing when to leave is important," and everyone has their own time.
I admit that in my personal life, I might be perceived as a tad emotional, but when it comes to practicing law, I focus on practicality. With that in mind, let's examine the practical aspects of the pros and cons of a January filing. Here’s what you can expect.
The Pros of Filing for Divorce in January
Strategy: In Texas, after you file for divorce, the law generally requires a 60-day waiting period you can finalize the process. Filing for divorce in January triggers the waiting period early in the year. If all issues are resolved, the divorce can be finalized as early as March. This approach is ideal for those wanting to conclude their proceedings quickly (new year new me?).
Financials: If you file for divorce in January and your divorce is officially finalized before December 31st, the IRS will consider you "single" for that entire tax year and when you file your taxes, you will each file individually. Handling the divorce this way creates a clear financial separation and give you clarity managing your financial future.
The Cons of Filing for Divorce in January
The drawbacks of filing for divorce at the beginning of the year are subjective. Many still celebrate Valentine's Day, only to confront the reality that they will not be doing so with their spouse. Upcoming Spring weddings will necessitate changes in RSVPs. Preparations for kids' graduations and college transitions will undoubtedly become more tense as warring parents try to figure out who's hosting what.
"For people who decide to marry, there is never an ideal time to file for divorce."
It's January. There's a lot of "what we won't put up with in 2026" posts circulating social media. For some, feeling triggered by that post can lead to filing for divorce. While reconciliation is always possible, the act of filing for divorce itself is a significant and often adversarial step.
Financials: Initiating a divorce isn't free and post-holiday financial debt can complicate the process.Divorce involves considerable upfront financial costs. An uncontested divorce, where both parties agree on all terms, is the least expensive option. But, if you anticipate a dispute over anything—child custody, spousal support, who gets the house—be ready for much higher costs.
Yesterday, I ran into a former client and family friend whose divorce was finalized in 2025. She thanked me for helping her reclaim her life. We filed for divorce in December 2024, just a few days before Christmas, and it was finalized the week before Easter. We both acknowledged how much a year can change a person. It's a new year. Is there a new version of you?
Deciding when and how to start a divorce is one of the most challenging decisions you will ever make.
