Erebus's very bad day apparently
It's that time again already!
Secret Sanguinala is an AO3-based fic and art gift exchange for Warhammer 40k fandom. The schedule is the same as in previous years, leading up to gifts revealing on December 25.
The first step is tag nominations, creating the pool of relationships and characters that everyone will be able to request and offer. Nominations run until October 15. Guidelines are as follows:
Every AO3 account can nominate up to 20 tags (either relationships or solo characters). Check the ones that are already accepted so you can use your nomination slots for others!
Canon characters from any official Warhammer 40k/Horus Heresy media are allowed: the tabletop game, the novels, the video games, the comics...
Unnamed original characters are allowed, and you're welcome to identify faction, rank, or similar traits to specify the kind of OCs you're thinking about: Original Drukhari Wych/Original Sister of Battle, for example, or Original Night Lord & Original Flayed One.
For relationships, nominate by AO3 standard tagging: use / for relationships with romantic or sexual elements, and & for relationships without those elements.
For individual characters, use the prefix Solo: (e.g., Solo: Sanguinius).
Ready? Go nominate!
Do YOU want a new OC who's a Heresy-era astartes, young and determined and out of his depth as he tries to live up to his older brothers' expectations? Is it more exciting if the deck is stacked against him in ways that might make for good angst fodder? Hell yes you do and it is. Please allow me to point you at the Inductii, reinforcement space marines created by all the legions in the latter half of the Heresy as casualties mounted. Inductii (singular Inductius) were rushed through the space marine creation process with hypno-conditioning (brainwashing) and experimental medical bullshit that didn't really make up for their lack of experience, but close enough, right? It would have to be.
GW has just put out a new set of rules for fielding Inductii units in the Horus Heresy game, which includes this bit:
Records indicate that a variety of experimental or proscribed measures were employed to boost the fighting numbers of the Legions, often with a significantly increased attrition rate. While these recruits bore the appearance of their brother Legionaries, they lacked their experience, and were often less well versed in the culture and traditions of their Legion. Nevertheless, they played a valuable role in the conflict.
And then each different legion gets its own fighting profile, which includes mentions of specific things Inductii from each legion might be struggling with due to the way they were hastily assembled. Allow me to summarize:
Dark Angels: recruited post-Ruinstorm in the Crusade of Vengeance, not allowed to know the secrets of the Hexagrammaton/Wings, no physical anomalies noted.
Emperor's Children: "Empowered by a potent cocktail of experimental combat stimulants and physical modifications," fought while high and careless of casualties.
Iron Warriors: "Utterly indoctrinated into their unyielding master’s methods of waging war, the Inductii of the Iron Warriors were likened to the automata of the Cybernetica cohorts. Many observers compared them to statues, lurching into life to destroy their foe with roaring bolters before returning to unmoving silence."
White Scars: Often trained by Imperial Fists and Blood Angels as much as their own legion, deployed in vanguard roles where they tried to defeat enemy elites to prove themselves to their older brothers.
Space Wolves: Physically augmented Fenrisians with little chance for indoctrination, competing with each other in battle—strong shock troops but vulnerable to disciplined foes.
Imperial Fists: Resilient, stubborn, but lacking in initiative, prone to holding their positions no matter the cost or tactical value.
Night Lords: Barely soldiers, murderers recruited off the worlds Night Lords raided. "Unscrupulous Murderers" rule suggests they would cooperate to distract and backstab stronger foes.
Blood Angels: Missing the art/beauty and self-restraint traits full legionaries learned, the IX Inductii were grim and hungry, prone to drinking blood and eating flesh in battle.
Iron Hands: Faults in organic implants would be replaced with cybernetics, often experimental, sometimes erratic and dangerous to the Inductius or others.
World Eaters: World Eaters but worse, with Nails implanted early and vat-grown musculature, quicker to be lost to the Nails than their brothers.
Ultramarines: Extra-indoctrinated compared with their brothers, precision fighters who are unwilling to retreat or give up a fight no matter what.
Death Guard: Separated from most of the legion, sent out to fortify and endure across the galaxy "like a pestilence". (Imagine the shock and confusion it must have produced in their garrisons when Nurgle's influence took hold!)
Thousand Sons: Forbidden bio-alchemy and psychic indoctrination left these Inductii more vulnerable to mutation, and they didn't have the chance to specialize in a particular Prosperine Arcana discipline.
Sons of Horus: Most successful Inductii came from gang cultures similar to Cthonia's; the Inductii were generally cannon fodder unless they proved themselves with their resilience and brutality.
Word Bearers: Ritually marked and branded to draw the gods' attention, and to make them suitable hosts for eventual possession.
Salamanders: Recruited from worlds liberated from Traitor control, given the wargear of slain Salamanders and the expectation that they would live up to their forebears.
Raven Guard: After the first rebuilding effort on Deliverance was sabotaged, recruited from the same worlds as the Dark Angels.
Alpha Legion: Possibly had been making Inductii all along! Who knows. Inductii would form the visible Alpha Legion element in an attack, drawing attention away from concealed allies.
Obviously this is just the very tip of the iceberg on what you could do with any of these, but dang you guys! The potential for fucked up young space marines who know they're imperfect and expendable!
The SM2 update pics titles are hilarious.
Tumblr, I have erred
I collected my thoughts about Mephiston's arc and shared it with....Reddit.
So far I've been told that they hate the way my brain works (yeah me too take a fucking number) that my jokes aren't funny (valid) and that I'm supporting war crimes and also when I told someone to read the whole thing I got told I was wrong bc I didn't break it down for the guy myself. Because honestly it felt insulting to say oh you didn't get the context let me say the same thing. And one person argued an irrelevant question.
Not one person has actually agreed OR DISAGREED with what I was actually saying
Which was that the third book was a disappointment because it took Mephiston from being an avatar of someone struggling with trauma to an MCU character, stripping away all his depth and making him onesided and kind of not relatable.
And also that Antros was a jackass.
And I'm here because it's all so stupid. Hate my opinion, or not, but godDAMN at least react to my OPINION. All this tone policing/structure policing bullshit is just, well, I mean, I feel like a huge ass failure for one thing, like how come some people can have opinions and I can't? Am I that unlikable? Or that inept with words? It wasn't like I was making that unpopular a take, even--but even that's irrelevant because none of them are even referring to my take.
Why does Reddit HATE Mephiston so much?
Like...damn. I've read like four different rants just bashing the guy.
I mean Maelum Caedo 1v1s an actual chaos daemon without breaking a sweat and that's cool but Mephiston angsts around and zaps shit while bleeding from his eyeballs and he's the problem?
FOLLOW UP THOUGHT
Why are we all hating on Mephiston when Antros is RIGHT FUCKING THERE. Oh my god I have never wanted to slap a Warhammer character so hard.
I'm only 2 books in and he keeps getting his face fucked up by xenos and I'm like...well that's symbolic of something but the only thing that comes to mind is 'being an absolute dickhead' . I respect him for not 100% fanboying Mephiston but goddam every choice he makes is literally stupid.
How does a Lexicanium not know one of the bywords of Tzeentch?!?!
Okay no I get it now. City of Light maguffins the FUCK out of the Primaris procedure to make Mephiston ALL POWER NO CONFLICT.
Also, Antros is still a dick. I can't believe even Rhacelus likes him now. I WAS COUNTING ON YOU GAIUS.
Okay no but for real.
The thing that makes Mephiston interesting and not an overpowered dweeb is his conflict, his wondering who/what he is, and the dawning horror of the realization he's the Black Angel incarnate and City of Light so far just turns him into... a Marvel comics character. He's like Dr Strange in the later movies.
LIke that whole Octocalvariae conversation which turns into a 'I let him THINK I was being fooled when all along I was secretly fooling him' just. like. stop. I loved the first two books. Why are you doing this to me, DARIUS.

I read Ian Watson's Space Marine *please clap*
It's not as bad as you think.
It's worse.
Please to enjoy selected highlights from my Goodreads.
astartes arch goes crazy
Everyone: Please please please don't write your books in Google Docs. Frankly don't use Google Drive for personal stuff.
Their terms of service say they take down stuff like content related to terrorism and trafficking, but this Google Sheet was literally a list of movies I'd watched this year and books I'd read.
Holy smokes, guys. It's way worse than I thought. Google actually took away access to every single file of fiction writing I'd made on that account. BUT I backed it all up on Scrivener yesterday by coincidence. So I haven't lost my work, but I could have just lost the 12,000 words I've written this month after a year of really intense writer's block. I honestly don't know what that would have done to my psyche.
Please be careful out there, folks! <3
That is awful! If you're looking for a gdocs-like replacement, Ellipsus @ellipsus-writes is an explicitly queer friendly, anti-AI equivalent with online syncing and sharing - I've been using it for almost a year now as a replacement for gdocs and absolutely love it. They are pro-fanfic, so much so that they have a dedicated "export to Ao3" option that preserves all your formatting. They don't have an app (yet) but you can add it to your home screen via your mobile browser if you want.
I do still back up all my work to local storage on LibreOffice (free to download, Microsoft Office equivalent) too though, thank goodness you backed up to Scrivener OP!
I'm reading Soul Hunter and
the Night Lords
are
funny?
Like seriously the banter among them has me cracking up. Cyrion you are adorbs and I want to squeeze your cheeks.
NOTE TO SELF
You canNOT fall in love with every Librarian character you read about. Stop it.
Just wholesome shy dreadnought stuff. (seriously for once the comments are the best part)
