Apparently I last posted 2308 days ago... why am I back? Who knows.
It’s all Harry’s fault. Well, partially. I suppose Voldemort can be saddled with an equal portion of the blame. The point is, the Dursleys were just minding their own business when a horcrux was dumped on their doorstep. For the next decade it proceeded to warp their minds, turning them from your garden variety insufferable human beings into horrible, heartless monsters. The fact that they survived such prolonged horcrux exposure without delving into insanity or abandoning a helpless child only solidifies their place among the pantheon of noble and virtuous heroes in the Harry Potter universe.
*Mic drop*
That… actually does kind of explain an awful lot, dunnit.
Mind, what we see of Vernon before the timeskip is not exactly a pleasant person. That said, wow.
True; still, he didn’t strike me as the full-on Roald Dahl-esque monstrosity we saw when Harry was ten, just a standard variety self-absorbed jerk.
That’s…huh.
Oh. That… Makes sense.
"We mortals no longer kept gods to worship, but if I had known their lost names, I would have prayed to them. All of them. Concealed in the thicket, the wolf inched closer, its gaze set on the oblivious doe."
Many of us know Sarah J. Maas from her YA fantasy series Throne of Glass, which has…
Yay! So excited that the first chapter of A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is now live on TeenVogue.com! Hope you guys enjoy!
Heck yes!
Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson What the heck does this title mean? I can't for the life of me figure out its connection to the book... Anyhow, title aside, I did not like this book very much. The world in which it was set was fascinating; I quite enjoyed the religious system that was set up and its importance. But Elisa, ugh. She was terrible. Probably the most one-dimensional protagonist I've ever read. Her ONLY defining characteristic is that she's fat. It is mentioned that she is smart and knows their world's equivalent of The Art of War backwards and forwards, but we never see that (at least not until the very end). Whenever we see into her head it is only to show how she feels about the pastry she is eating or how much she wishes she was eating. Like, are you kidding me?? It is so reductive. Appearance is definitely a part of a character and, hell, it can be important... But it can't be the only thing we get!
The Demon Trappers by Jana Oliver Books 2, 3, and 4 to finish the series Meh. Is it weird that I feel like the series would have been way better had Riley been 19 instead of 17? There was a definite ick factor for me with her relationships that wouldn't have been there had she been just a teensy bit older. I guess overall, I really wanted this to be like Supernatural with a female protagonist... But it just wasn't. That's probably unfair to come at a book with, but we all read through a lens and in a world where Supernatural exists, this is just not as good as I want it to be.
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green This is the most conflicted I've felt about a book in a long time. I mean on the one hand, I had the conductor ask me if I was okay because I was crying on the train... But on the other hand, is it emotionally manipulative to show someone dying for 1/3 of a book? I thought both Gus and Hazel were pretentious and very Dawson's Creek-esque... But Isaac calls Gus out for being pretentious, so that sort of makes it okay? I guess it just bothered me that everyone talks the same. Had I read this when I was 16, it would have been my favorite book. I would have read it multiple times, been as in love with and devastated by Gus as Hazel was... But I am no longer 16. As an adult, one who has finished college and gotten married though not yet had children, I have a hard time getting behind the tragic beauty of falling in love and dying young. I found myself identifying more with Hazel's mom than Hazel and there is probably no emotional journey I want to experience less than that of a mother whose only child is dying. So, maybe this book has an age limit? Maybe I am just getting too old for YA?
REIGN (Unenchanted #4) IS OUT YOU JUST READ
Currently reading! It's marvelous.Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I have quite a few books to go up at this point.
Book 26 of 2014 Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Once you get past the exposition in the beginning, it's really enjoyable! Who'd have thought I'd love reading a novel about a video game?
Book 25 of 2014 Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini Worldwalker book 1 (it looks like it will be a trilogy) I feel like it's been a long time since I've read a really good witch book. Paranormal and then dystopian had completely taken over for a while... And I bet no one wanted to compete with or be compared to Harry Potter. I was absolutely delighted when I realized that this not only dealt with witches, but alternate universes. I loved that magic bridged the gap between parallel worlds rather than science. Though there was also a thoroughly modern understanding of witchcraft as a science. It was an interesting melding of the two. I don't want to get into anything that would give away the plot, but the ending of this book shattered my theories of the eventual series ending. I am very happy that Josephine is not taking this in a direction that I could expect. I'm excited to be surprised. If you've been itching to read a new take on magic or love parallel universes (this world diverges from ours at the Salem Witch Trials), read this! I am so excited to see where this goes. Only a year until book 2.
Draco and Teddy
IS THAT A WEASLEY JUMPER????
Book 24 of 2014 Crap Kingdom by DC Pierson Not part of a series The concept was better than the execution. It ended up being more generally amusing than actually funny. I mean, the idea is great: Tom finds out he is the "chosen one" of a magical kingdom, so he goes there from our world only to find out that his kingdom is literally garbage. I felt like it had the makings of hilarity... Just didn't quite get there
Book 23 of 2014 Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor Book 3 in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy You know a book is good when after finishing it, you immediately check to see if there is a next one. And then everything makes it seem like there isn't going to be another one. What?? In the final few chapters, Laini opened up this whole new conflict. After finishing the trilogy, I now feel like I have only read the prologue. Great book, but it just can't end there. It would be like if Lord of the Rings ended when they got to Rivendell. The characters only now, at the end, know what they are facing... And it's just over? With only a vague impression that they will win? WHERE ARE THE OTHER 4-9 BOOKS?!?!?? Dear Laini, Your story just jumped in scale. It can be an epic! Don't leave us at the prologue!
I am haunted by all the editions of books that are prettier than the ones I already own.
