There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. Historically female shapeshifters always shift into something dangerous (snake) or sleek (cat) or dainty (bird) but female werewolves ignore the masculine gaze completely. They're distorted beasts that have no ulterior motive except to destroy. Nothing about them is nurturing or modest. They're the opposite of what a woman "should be." Their omission from pop culture is not an accident.

#I do find the few depictions of female werewolves to be reallyyy interesting #like you see things like ginger snaps where that is the point (all hail ginger snaps)#but I’m thinking within things like teen wolf or twilight where otherwise depiction of werewolves is so masculine that you do have to #explain how female werewolves fit into this #in teen wolf they kind of go out of their way to avoid full on female werewolves with a couple of exceptions #where it’s instead a coyote or a jaguar or like some kind of additional other layer put on top #and the wild nature does still feel very feminized and sexualized #then you have Stephenie Meyer over here who is always cooking up something crazy if even by accident #where the werewolf population in forks is directly related to the vampire population and they’ve RUN OUT OF MALES TO WEREWOLF #so the single female werewolf like completely upends their very heterosexual masculine society #the thing about twilight is that there is so much wrong with it but smeyer will drop some random bit of extraneous lore and go now back to #Bella and Edward and Jacob the three most boring characters here #and you’re like can we get back to the werewolf population crisis

had a conversation with one of my newer colleagues yesterday where they were like how do you deal with spoilers (we work in entertainment media so quite frankly it’s very spoiler heavy) and i went on this whole thing about you know i’ve gotten way more chill about spoilers over the years and i just make peace with the fact that if i can’t see something as soon as possible i’m likely getting spoiled. very sage and pragmatic etc.

until they immediately followed it with “so did you hear about the new spider-man where-” and i interrupted and said all of what i just said is true but if you spoil spider-man for me rn i will cry.

so anyways. shutting down the socials until i return from the film tonight. happy spider-man day.

me when i like the 2-3h movie: directors should never have to compromise their vision to appeal to something as fickle as people's "patience". anyone complaining about the movie's length is simply a tiktok-addicted philistine.

me when i don't like the 2-3h movie: once i become god emperor of earth anyone trying to make a movie longer than 90 minutes will be shot.

#okay actually my general stance is that if your movie is longer than 90 min you just have a higher burden of proof of telling me why #all movies should be 90 minutes so tell me why yours is longer #this mostly works out.

i’ll be so fr emily wilson’s review of nolan’s odyssey pissed me off so badly that this is the first time i’ve ever been like “and with what film degree” in all seriousness.

emily wilson is a classicist i respect a lot, and i will always defer to actual classicists when speaking about greco roman classics despite having a sliver of a background in that myself. but she really kind of made an ass out of herself in that review and i just have to say that she is clearly not trained in film in any way shape or form.

and to make one last thing clear, please don’t comment “people are allowed to dislike things.” they are, i don’t think the movie is perfect, and i have plenty of friends who disliked it for a number of reasons, all valid. it is quite literally that she wrote a disdainful bordering on hateful review that presents her in a position of authority of not just the odyssey entirely, but of film in general, when it’s pretty clear reading it that filmmaking is not a space in which she has a single clue. genuinely made me like her less, and that’s a bummer. over a MAN?! emily…
