in my experience if you're learning a language but you're worried about not pronouncing it right or sounding ridiculous in front of native speakers, I'm here to tell you that most people do not care. they don't care if you have an accent or if your mother tongue is peeking through, because in all honesty, everyone has an accent. it's unfair and frankly unrealistic to expect people to bear no remnants of their native tongue when speaking another. you've spent your entire life speaking your language, interacting with the world in it; your understanding of language is built on your native one and its natural sounds. no one can expect you to entirely shift how your brain processes words and sounds. most native speakers will just appreciate you trying at all. if it's comprehensible, if the gist of what you're saying gets across, then it's good enough. if you're trying, your accent is fine.

Vocabulary: Different Ways to Say “Change”

안녕하세요 여러분! Hey everyone! I have a vocab list for y’all today that I got a request for! There are many different ways to say “to change” in Korean, so this list explains how to use each one! I hope it’s helpful :)

바꾸다 -> This is probably the most common way to say “to change.” It is an active verb, meaning it is used to say that something changes something else.

저는 머리색을 바꿨어요. = I changed my hair color.

바뀌다 -> To be changed. This is a passive verb, meaning it is used to say that something simply changed.

머리색이 바뀌었어요. = My hair color changed.

Notice the difference in particles you use. When using 바꾸다, you attach the object particle -을/를 to the thing you are changing. With 바뀌다, however, you attach the subject particle, -이/가 to the thing that is changed. More about particles here!

변하다 -> This, I believe, is used the same way that 바뀌다 is used, meaning it is also passive. I feel like this is mostly used when describing people that have changed over time.

마크 씨는 고등학교부터 변하지 않았어요. = Mark hasn’t changed since high school.

변화하다 -> I think this is pretty much the same as 변하다 but sounds a little more formal.

An example from Naver Dictionary is 미국은 끊임없이 변화하고 있다, meaning “America is in a state of flux.”

변화시키다 -> This is the active form of 변화하다. Like 바꾸다, it can be used to say that something changes something else.

원을 달러로 변화시켰어요. = I changed the won to dollars.

변경하다 -> This verb, like 바꾸다, is active. It is also rather formal. I think the main difference between this and 바꾸다 is that this isn’t really used for saying that you exchange something for something else. Rather, it means that something becomes something new if that makes sense.

An example from Naver Dictionary is 계약 조건을 변경하다, meaning “to modify the conditions of a contract.”

달라지다 -> Same as the other passive verbs. Literally means “to become different.” It seems less formal than 변화하다.

매일 달라지다 = to change daily

(옷을) 갈아입다 -> This is used when you’re talking about changing the clothes you’re wearing. This is an active verb.

잠옷으로 갈아입었어요. = I changed into pajamas.

갈다 -> This is active. It seems like it’s mostly used when you’re talking about replacing something like a diaper, a light bulb, or a tire. 

From Naver Dictionary: 배터리를 갈다 = to replace batteries 

환전하다 -> This is active. I think this word can exclusively be used for talking about converting currency. You can use other words to talk about currency too, but this one is ONLY used for currency!

달라를 옌화로 환전하다 = to convert dollars to yen / to exchange dollars for yen

교환하다 -> This is active and specifically refers to exchanging something for something else.

From Naver Dictionary: 셔츠를 더 큰 치수로 교환하다 = to exchange a shirt for a bigger size.

안녕 여러분, 오랜만이죠? ㅋㅋㅋ

사실 저는 요즘 시험을 많이 봐서 진짜 바빠요 ㅠㅠ 목요일 한국어 쓰기 시험 보고 오늘은 음성학 시험 봤어요. 한국어 조금 어려워지만 질문을 다 대답하고 마지막 쓰는 질문 진짜 쉬웠어요. 그 마지막 쓰기 질문이 "제일 행복한 순간 vs 제일 어려운 순간" 것 같아요. 그래서 저는 행복한 순간으로 몬스타 엑스 콘서트 썼어요. 오늘의 음성학 시험 도 쉬웠어요 ^^ 저의 선생님이, 앤-마리 선생님, 음성소리 하고 학생들 소리를 썼어요. 그 파트가 쉬는데 그 마지막 질문은.. 우ㅏ 진짜 어렵다 ㅋㅋ 소리를 2개 있고 질문은 "두 소리를 비교해주세요" 그리고 언어 용어 아주 많이 써야 해요. 솔직히 저는 공부하지 않았어서 도 어려웠어요. 저의 친구들 모두 플래시 카드 만들고 저는 그냥 도착했어요 ㅋㅋ 준비하지 않았어요 ㅋㅋㅋ

아무튼, 저는 지금 진짜 피곤해요. 이번 주말에 한국어 그리고 언어학 공부해야 해요.

안녕하세요!!!

오늘은 저는 친구들이랑 같이 베이킹 했어요! 일단은 저는 일찍 일어나고 샤워하고 아침 먹고 저의 일본 친구 마나미랑 같이 쇼핑 했어요. 우리는 케이크 반죽 믹스를 그리고 레몬 설탕 프러스팅 샀어요. 그럼 우리는 커트니의 집에 걸었어요. 일단은 빵 만들었어. 빵 반죽은 아주 끈적끈적 것 같지만 반죽한 후에 매끄러졌어. 그럼 가스레인지에서 빵을 증명하다가 우리 브라우니들 만들었어. 브라우니 반죽은 조금 얇은 편이었어요? 믹스 통을 2개 좋겠어요.. 하지만 정말 맛있어요. 오후에는데 우리는 점심 아직 안 먹어서 아주 배고팠어요. 그래서 우리 3명 같이 브라우니들 다 먹었어요 ㅋㅋ 브라우니 먹는 동안에 빵이 2배 크기었어.. 진짜 놀랐어요. 그래서 오븐에 빵이 넣었어 30분 구웠어요. 우리는 도 컵케이크를 만들려고 했는데 실패했어요 ㅠㅠ 컵케이크를 타지만 아직도 맛있었요. 빵 도 진짜 맛있었어요!! 빵은 탱탱하고 스폰지 같은 질감 있었어요. 정말 좋아했어요.

지금은 새벽 2:37 😳 자야 해요... 그럼 나중에 이야기해~! 안녕!

안녕하세요 여러분! 이게 저의 첫번째 블로그 게시물입니다. 오늘부터 저는 매주 여기에 게시하고 싶어요. 그냥 일기처럼 게시하는 것 같아요 ^^

일단은, 저는 소개하주시겠습니다.

저는 매디 이에요. 요크 세인트 존 대학교에 일학년 학생입니다. 저는 언어학 그리고 한국어 공부하고 있어요. 지금은 2학기 일곱째 주에서 저는 아직 초보입니다, 하지만 저는 4년 혼자게 공부했어 그래서 고급 수업이 들어고 있어요.

원래 케이팝 팬이기 때문에 한국어 공부하기 시작하지만 저는 지금 한국 문화고 언어학 정말 좋아요. 그래서 미래에 저는 한국에 영어 가르치고 살고 싶어요. (다른 게시물에 저는 케이팝 더 말할 거예요 ;D)
