I know that his last year at Palemetto Neil gets bullied up and down for "missing his boyfriend" It. Is. Constant. And from all sides too, considering Wymack is probabbly the one that started the joke.

But then after one of the games where the Foxes win, Andrew surprise visits and Neil Josten laughs with delight. He starts buzzing from joy and no one has ever seen him so openly happy before. They tone down the bullying for, like, the next two days.

andrew and neil both having to live with the fact that there's someone else out there actively caring / prioritizing / thinking about them over everything else is so sickening. remember how neil didnt think andrew would pick him over aaron and andrew didnt think neil would pick him over exy. and yet they did.

the thing about neil always saying that he's fine is that he's not hearing the same question that other people are asking him. he grew up not only on the run but in such a way that people were constantly on the very edge of catching him! "i'm fine" means yeah i was shot but my legs still work and i can make it to the car. "i'm fine" means i'm in a lot of pain but i won't scream and give our position away.

"i'm fine" means "i can do what is needed of me without failing you", it means "don't worry about me". there were other priorities. neil saying he's not okay is him saying that he needs help.

i think mary would have dropped everything if he said he wasn't okay, because she taught neil to fucking mean it if he did.
