MHA Vol 38 Obi:
Toga: I heard that it [the cover art] was initially supposed to be bloodier and scarier, that it was drawn to be like a horror movie’s poster.
Toga: It seems like he came back to his senses halfway while drawing. He must’ve been possessed by something.
TUM Vol 5:
All Might: The cover was drawn to be summer-y…
All Might: But to be honest, the season in the main events* [in Team Up Missions] is actually winter…
Deku: Let’s just say that more emphasis is put on the mood of the piece and leave it at that…!
*T/N: Initially confused this 本編/honpen (“main story”) for the main story of MHA but that can’t be possible lol. But it’d make sense if it were TUM timeline since it’s set somewhere before the start of next year’s spring.
Late post for Deku’s pair of shoes that Horikoshi drew for yesterday’s episode.
Deku’s shoes being off his feet means that he can finally rest, but in most Asian countries at least, taking off your shoes also mean that you’re home.
So yeah, Deku’s finally home, thanks to the endeavors of his classmates.
The art itself is simple, but the meaning behind it is powerful.
“While working to produce “Bokura”, the MHA episode today was the episode that I’m especially emotionally attached to. I’m moved…and here are the front and back covers [of the single] that just got revealed….🥲”
I decided to create a separate, more detailed post, since I usually delete the weekly translation post after the official chapter is released.
I don’t know if Viz will translate the pieces, but I’m sure they probably won’t be able to fit the English translation of the letters (or what can be seen of it) because English words are Just Long.
I’ve been really busy so there’s no telling when I can feel not tired enough to TL so here’s a summary ↓
EDIT: forgot to add read more :P
-All Might is shown studying how to teach (there’s a book called “How to Be a Teacher vol 3)
-He ponders over how it’s starting to be cold nowadays and sees Aizawa carrying his usual sleeping bag
-All Might tells Aizawa to take care of his sleeping conditions more, but Aizawa says he’s fine this way since he “can immediately wake up this way” and how it’s “logical since he’s tasked with protecting his students” and leaves.
-All Might mutters “Logical…huh”. He looks down on his books, specifically a page that says “Q: I want to get along with my students but don’t know how to” and gets an idea.
****
-We skip to the students’ holidays, first up: Kaminari & Mineta
-Kaminari and Mineta are planning a Super Secret Investigation, with Mineta pulling out a measuring tape
-They sneakily move inside a certain room and after confirming that no-one is inside, they do their thing.
-Aizawa discovers them hyping about “how this is like that” and how “it’s a super important piece of info”
-Aizawa asks them what they’re doing in the teachers’ dorm
-Kaminari and Mineta are shocked he’s here and asks him why he’s here, to which Aizawa replies that even if it’s a holiday he’s always keeping an eye on his students so that they don’t overdo on the fun.
-Aizawa menacingly repeats his question: What are you doing here?
-Kaminari and Mineta run away, yelling that they’re not doing anything suspicious.
****
-Scene changes to Deku’s holiday
-After washing his face, he monologues about how even though it’s a holiday, he doesn’t have any time to play around with a serious face
-Turns out the serious thing he needs to do is open all his All Might/hero blind merch lol
-He begs and prays for All Might’s rare merch to come home
-We skip to the future a little and we’re shown a Deku who’s still opening hero merch. He talks about the heroes whose cards he got: Crust (who is revealed to have a younger brother, also a hero. Their team up made news recently), Mitoma (???) and Toy-toy (she’s a hero specializing in reconnaissance). No All Might yet at this point. On the floor we see 2 small figures of Hawks and one of Endeavor
-Next, Deku reads all his pent-up hero magazines. It’s filled with usual irl celebrity stuff like love scandals (Deku’s like those two?! I didn’t expect that) lol. Cementoss is revealed to write a column for the mag, which is coming back after hiatus (Deku’s like “I CANT WAIT)
-Lastly, he writes the usual hero info on his notebook and exclaims that he needs to preorder All Might’s latest figure.
-We see him muttering about how he’s already broke this month and how doing Mightivites* is hard since he’s only a student
*All Might-related activities lol
-Deku is however, determined to not give up because everyone in class A is doing the same with their limited pocket money and looks determined to full-cowl his brain since it’s no time to play around.
****
-We skip to nighttime, to the girls’ holiday. The girls are seen sewing. Momo offers them decaf rooibos tea while they take a break. Ashido teases Uraraka about her crush again (sigh)
-Aizawa comes to the class A dorms and tells them to go to bed since it’s late. The girls agree and scurry off suspiciously.
-Aizawa seems to feel like something is off
****
-Skip to Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero and Todoroki’s holiday next day. They’re climbing a snowy mountain.
-Bakugo is far ahead of the other three who looks tired and tells them to not drop dead yet. He also tells them to not follow him as they like.
-Sero tells Bakugo that mountain climbing is great and it can help them build up stamina as well
-Kirishima adds that it’s much safer with more people but Bakugo only looks to his goal tells him that he’s capable of climbing alone.
-The 4 reach their destination and sees the sunrise (?). Hard to tell the time of the day lol.
-Kirishima yells about how the satisfaction of reaching the goal is great
-Bakugo says that it’s a privilege only those who finished climbing can feel, only for Sero to say that he’s taken a pic and sent it to the class A chat group lol. Bakugo threatens to push him off the cliff djdjsj
-Todoroki watches the sky and warns the group that the weather starting to get suspicious
-And indeed the weather suddenly changes to a snowstorm the next panel
-Sero is shown violently shuddering from the cold. Todoroki attempts to warm him up with his quirk only for Bakugo to stop him and say that it’s time for them to test out “that”
****
-Another skip to another scene, focusing on Todoroki’s holiday (2). He’s shown staring at blank paper.
-Deku and Iida visit his room.
-Todoroki confesses that he’s starting run out of things to write to his mother.
-Deku asks him if he’s written about their team up with Mic to the city of art (Iida quips on how it’s the one where Bakugo got turned into a painting).
-Todoroki responds by saying that he didn’t get permission from Bakugo to write about it. Deku is like “you went to ask Kacchan for permission??”
-Todoroki asks Deku for suggestions, who of course only suggests All Might related stuff.
Todoroki: “Please give me something not too biased towards All Might”
-Deku is like “Sorry • . •” and Todoroki is like “No, sorry for asking”
-Todoroki doesn’t have any ideas he’s starting to look through health magazines about specialized acupuncture points for a good night’s sleep to write about
-Iida is reminded about their original purpose on visiting after hearing Todoroki talk about a good night’s sleep. Deku is also reminded and says that there’s something he wants him to help them about.
-Todoroki is like “Oh” and says that he hasn’t written to his mother about “that”.
-Iida and Deku are like “THAT’S IT!!”
****
-We’re shown a panel of Rei’s hospital room (the gentian is ofc there)
-Then we skip to the darkened Class A dorm, with Aizawa opening the entrance door. He tells his students that if they stay up late it’ll affect their performance tomorrow.
-Surprise!!! The whole class is there and they tell Aizawa thank you for everything he’s done for them.
-Back to Rei, we see her smiling at Todoroki’s letter and it reveals what the kids’ are up to: they’re preparing a surprise for Aizawa!
-They gift Aizawa with a new warm sleeping bag.
-Kaminari tells Aizawa that the whole class cooperated in its creation:
-Kaminari and Mineta sneaked to the teachers’ dorm to measure Aizawa’s current sleeping bag
-Deku is in charge of the designing/planning (which is why he’s already broke and also why he mentions the rest of the class’ pocket money lol)
-Momo created the materials and the rest of the girls sew
-Bakugo and co. helped out with the quality check (turns out Sero is the Guinea pig, Bakugo the guide to make sure they don’t die, Kirishima is there because he’s tough, Todoroki the heater shsjsns).
-And….it was all All Might’s idea in the first place!
-Everything clicked for Aizawa at last, but he says that the students should use their limited break time for more important things like training.
-The students complain and are like “we know that!” and All Might is like “You’re so strict…”
-The last panels show Aizawa commenting about how the sleeping bag is warm.
How long did it take oda to get such an ideal sequel from shounen jump not saying he doesn’t work hard cause over 20 years is no joke but I think it benefits shounen jump to give the mangaka breaks
Oda is a notorious workaholic and it took him working until he actually collapsed from overwork and needed to be hospitalized that WSJ took matters into their hands and managed his schedule.
He was hospitalized in 2013. ONE PIECE started serialization 1997. So, 16 years.
Now he takes one break every 3 chapters. I still think it’s far from ideal, and imo the break schedule should be rotated among to current WSJ authors too.
And yeah, we see improvements with the art when the authors are given time, idk why they won’t.
"horikoshi really likes bakugou" is this the famous tough love i've heard about 😭
Yes lol.
Horikoshi is obviously very invested in Bakugo’s journey towards being better and the narrative he writes continuously punishes him for being a massive asshole to Deku before.
That beating by Shigaraki he got should be last though imo. One of the last chapters before he “died” was titled “The Man Who Made Some Progress” in regards to Bakugo being a hero—and I don’t doubt there will be even more progress.
I think one of the main difference between Horikoshi and some of his fans is that he doesn’t shy away from giving Bakugo all the difficult trials in his journey towards being a better human being. Like, he knows this will only drive character development in him. Babying him, treating him as if he is a dainty, fragile thing, will not.
Not that Bakugo himself will enjoy being treated like he’s a fragile baby anyway. He’s a character who’s driven by competitiveness—and nobody but Hori knows that the best.
Ashihara (world trigger) also went on to a monthly schedule due to health reasons right? I'm wondering when did the editorial decide to put him on a monthly schedule? Was it when it became too extreme or was it Ashihara sensei asked for it...
I think Ashihara has no choice but to go on a monthly schedule because he suffers from a form of cervical spondylosis.
His disease causes him to feel numbness on his neck-shoulder area, and according to JP sources it even prevents him from moving when it’s bad.
So yeah. There was no way he’s continuing on with a weekly schedule, and even on monthly he takes sudden breaks when needed.
Thankfully, World Trigger fans in general are very understanding and supportive of him.
I understand that's a peculiar situation, but Oda has been saying "One Piece will end in 2 months" for like... 10 years? So yeah, sometimes SJ authors don't really understand the pacing of their own story 😂
Take Gintama. The WSJ editorial announced that it’d end in 5 chapters with a lot of fanfare and it did! ………..on WSJ only lol
The author wasn’t able to end it and moved it to Jump Giga where………….it also didn’t end in one chapter.
Gintama continued for whole 3 chapters of 50ish pages (Giga is published every 3 months) before the author finally ended it. It’s wholesome that the reason Gintama wasn’t able to end is because the author couldn’t bear parting with his characters :’)
Also moving to Giga brought great improvements to Gintama’s art. It was pretty good before (Gintama’s artstyle might not suit everyone’s tastes), became better with a 1 chapter every 3 months pace.
But anyway, I don’t doubt there are authors who can predict and schedule their chapters well, but imo Horikoshi feels like one of those authors who cannot. The fact that he said “highly likely* that last poll was MHA’s last” instead of being decisive with the wording is because he can’t cross out the possibility that it won’t end by whatever deadline he’s set this year.
*the wording used is 恐らく/osoraku which is used when chances are around 80-90% but still can’t brush off the 10-20% alternative possibility.
Speaking of which, a Japanese artist I followed on twitter talked about the origins of the word “rival” a few days ago. They mentioned it having the Latin word “rivus” (meaning “small river”) as its origin and I’m like. Well….
To be exact, it is Latin “rivus” (small river; stream) to Latin “rivalis” (“two people sharing the same river”, as water source presumably) to English “rival” in its current meaning.
I wonder if this is a coincidence at all, considering how rival is ライバル/raibaru, which is a Japanese word of foreign origin (外来語/gai’rai-go). So maybe Horikoshi wondered one day what the origin of the word “rival” could be and looked it up on google.
Wow they’re updating a lot of things, including profiles of the OFA holders revealed in the anime. Nothing beyond what the manga hasn’t yet revealed though, so no OFA2 and OFA3 (altho the PV spoiled that lol), no birthdates etc. Also no En quirk, since that’s next week.
They added the name of Yoichi’s original quirk though (and spoiled his name too before anime reveal lol).
Apparently Yoichi’s original quirk was called “Quirk Bestowment/Granting”
I don’t think that was revealed before? We did know that his quirk allows him to give others quirks (?) though right?
EDIT: THESE AREN’T COASTERS YOU CAN USE (not that I’m planning to use them at all) THEY’RE PAPER-BASED AND PROBABLY WILL BE RUINED ON USE. Purely decorative coasters…
On another episode of My Hero Academia: Rivals ~Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo~….
Look at this shojo coaster djdjdj even has pink flowery frame lol. Ngl they give powerpuff girls vibes. Precure Deku and Bakugo.
