Hancock
One Piece ワンピース [Amazon Lily Arc] : Shichibukai Boa “Snake Princess” Hancock vs Captain “Straw Hat” Luffy
“Man, tell me…how did you get onto this island? What do you want here? I’m not a fool to believe in such a ridiculous tale. I know you’re up to no good, you’re after something. You’ll never leave here alive, your fate is already sealed! Amazon Lily is a nation of woman warriors. Here, strength is beauty. Fight to the best of your ability and die an honorable death!”
Boa Hancock is among the few characters in One Piece that I consider has no power cap. The only ones thus far who were willingly able to resist her Mero Mero no Mi were Luffy and Vice Admiral Momonga (barely), the rest crumbled to dust. That is what I consider a broken Paramecia. She practically came out of the “Summit War” Saga unscathed! My favorite techniques are Pistol Kiss & Slave Arrow and even tho she doesn’t really use Salome for combat, I like that it’s huge af. Amazon Lily was an interesting arc, got to see Oda explore the female figure other than the typical type 01 he always uses, and the Gorgon Sisters ties to Fisher Tiger was an interesting backstory. Also, any arc where Luffy uses Haoshoku Haki will always leave an impression!
Finally got around to drawing Boa Hancock, one of my favorite characters of all time. Original scale image and PSD available at my Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/posts/boa-hancock-7239779

↳ One Piece Alphabet Challenge × B is for Boa Hancock
It seems to me that Hancock acts kind of... young, I guess? in her later interactions with Luffy. Like, she packs supplies for him and tries to keep him out of trouble and thinks that he's proposing when he's nice to her at all. I don't know, it seems like a childlike idea of marriage to me. It's also in sharp contrast to her cold, shameless use of her sexuality on other men, which seems more jaded and adult.
I might use slightly different language to describe some of this, but the differences in Hancock’s behavior you’re describing are absolutely there and absolutely work for her character.
The defining part of Hancock’s life was the time she spent as a slave. It was an experience that caused damage to her on every single level that is virtually unimaginable to most of us. And because of that, to this day Hancock continues to keep almost everyone around her at a distance. Hancock is very acutely aware of the effect she has on men (and many women too), and she uses that to her advantage
Whether it is acting bold and confident, shy and helpless, or flirtatious, Hancock knows what she is doing and she does it to manipulate people into feeling how she wants them to feel, and doing what she wants them to do.
That’s the distinction here. Hancock is hardly trying to have a “relationship” with these people. In situations like the one with Domino, Hancock acted flirtatious and suggestive in order to provoke a small but significant reaction from her. A skip in her heartbeat, a momentary spike in adrenaline, a moment of attraction–that was all Hancock needed to give her a window to use her power to completely petrify Domino and allow her to let Luffy escape undetected into the prison. And in the above panel of her blushing, she did that and acted scared in order to prompt Magellan to attack some of the men harassing her, giving her a chance to deliver Luffy’s message to Ace without being overheard by anyone else. Hancock uses the way she acts as a tool. And even her bold, narcissistic behavior in a way can be interpreted as her acting powerful and without weakness so that no one can even imagine that she might have weaknesses and a past that has scared her horribly.
But it is different with Luffy. Because she actually genuinely likes Luffy. She loves him and she wants to be with him. And she has no idea how that would even work or how to best try to make that happen. She doesn’t understand that kind of stuff. To her, her body and her behavior is usually simply a tool, a means of deception and way to influence and control others. When interacting with Luffy, she doesn’t have the detachment and disdain that she carries with her when interacting with most everyone else. She doesn’t do the things she has done to people like Magellan and Domino with Luffy because to Hancock, acting like that isn’t something you do to someone you like and want to be close to–it’s just a way of manipulating a person to use them for your own ends. Same for her intimidating, vain confidence. She doesn’t act like that with him because that’s not “really” who she is. That’s the way she wants others, specifically people who she wants to remain distant from, to perceive her.
Hancock is a woman who had her late childhood/adolescence stolen from her and replaced by four long years of constant torture and abuse. She doesn’t understand how a loving romantic relationship between adults actually works. In the period of one’s life when one starts to learn about that kind of thing, Hancock was busy being tortured for the amusement of depraved men, and since then she has lived her entire life on guard, jaded, cruel, and keeping everyone around her save for a close few from knowing her in any real way so that they can never know the horrors she has been through and use them against her. For Hancock, acting the way she does in the panels I included aren’t about being “adult.” They’re an act and a tool and void of any genuine feeling. So of course, when it comes to Luffy, none of that applies anymore and so she doesn’t have it in her head at all to try to act that way. She doesn’t know how to act at all because she’s such a ball of unbridled and positive emotions. The kind of happy emotions that have been absent in her for the last almost twenty years of her life.
Finishing up, I’ve written more about the subject of Hancock falling for Luffy in this post, which touched on the idea of how Luffy’s lack of attraction to Hancock was an important part of why Hancock fell for him in the first place. Basically, given what Hancock has been through it is very easy to imagine that she is extremely sex repulsed, and when others (most specifically men) express sexual attraction in her, it is a sign to her that they want to do things to her that are basically torture to her. So, it might make things difficult for Hancock that Luffy isn’t interested in her like that, but it is also something that enabled her to feel comfortable and safe around him in the first place.
