08.26.20 // went back to the lab for the first time after submitting my dissertation to take some slide pictures. not sure why i was expecting it to look any different, but it’s still just as messy as i left it lol.
21.08.20// I’ve been in such an academic rut lately (and otherwise, but especially academic). With everything going on, it has been hard to focus and hard to connect with my work. But after a wonderful meeting with a committee member yesterday, I really want to reconnect. So here I am, reconnecting, sitting down with a book I’ve been dreading re-reading and a cup of verveine tea. My goal is to read 30 pages before the end of the day.

my PI: add a picture of tumor histology to your paper but ONLY if you have the picture already, no need to re-stain slides or go back to the lab to get pics.
me, someone who really loves histology and always takes copious pictures of my slides as if they were my own children because ugh it’s so COOL: i have a family album right here which one do you think has the best contour

“I am a scientist,” I remind myself, as I frantically check my samples again for no discernible reason. “I am a being of logic.”

Caitlin Keegan
Xray: shows bone/skull only. Does not show the brain. Best used to detect if there are bone fractures. CT: quick test. Shows brain but detail not great. Shows if any larger bleed, stroke, lesions, or masses. MRI: long test. Shows brain and detail is great. Shows smaller bleeds, stroke, lesions, or masses. MRA: shows the flow of blood in the vasculature system of the brain. If there is vessel narrowing or blockage this test would show it. PET scan: shows how active different parts of the brain is. An active brain uses sugar as energy and pet scan detects how much sugar is being used by lighting up and turning different colors. The more sugar being used the more that area will light up and be different in colors. Cancer cells use the most sugar so cancer cells light up the most. PET scan is used to see if there are cancer cells. (Cancer cells replicate at a very fast and uncontrolled rate hence use a lot of sugar to allow that replication hence why they light up so much).

This is a nice comparison if you’re just trying to wrap your head around this. Also a good way to explain tests to patients.
Do you keep a commonplace book? It’s not entirely a journal or a scrapbook – it’s more a carefully curated notebook compiled of texts copied from anywhere and everywhere. It can contain anything as long as it affects the compiler. I’ve had this one since I was 16, it is reserved for my most favourite lines from poems, books, songs, films, etc.
studying science and math, so deep you forget the existence of the real world
scientists be making cell signaling diagrams and calling it “___ signaling at a glance!” but apparently don’t understand the definition of “glance” because it’ll still be like the most complicated schematic you’ve ever seen in your life
For thoughs who do not know what a signaling pathway is

this is the most aesthetically pleasing yet still hellish map i’ve seen (but it does not include actual protein names thank god) (from this paper that is more like an opinion piece)
also Roche has two… intense posters.
those roche posters literally. made me scream
