Nova #7: Chapter Seven: Away Game

Up, Up, and... || CA Intro

"The door to the city is right behind you, and there should be a board outside with your housing information on it. We’re expecting great results, so I hope you’ll be kind enough to cooperate with us. Goodbye!”

The scientist reaches forward, and the screen goes dark once again.

     Sam Alexander turns around, and his eyes fall upon a door. He opens it and finds himself in the middle of a city. He looks up at the skyscrapers towering over his head, and glances around as cars zip by as if nothing happened. He finds his way to an empty alleyway and grabs his helmet. When he places it on his head, the Nova Centurion uniform encompasses his body. "They think they can keep me here? As if." Sam gets a running start, then he shoots off into the sky—

                Only to stop suddenly about 15 feet up.

     "No problem. If I can't go up, I'll just break my way out." Sam uses his Nova powers to fly at full speed in the direction of the city limits. If this is some sort of simulation, there's bound to be a way to break out. And if it's an actual city, he'll find his way somewhere.

     Eventually.

5:00 and counting...          4:59...                     4:48...

     Nova feels the rush of wind against his face as he zooms through the city, a trail of bright blue behind him. There's nothing like the freedom of flight, and ever since he was given his father's helmet by Rocket Raccoon and Gamora, and learned to use it properly, he wouldn't give this up for the world.

                               3:00...                                           2:59...                                                      2:58...

The scenery zips by him, the blurring lines blending together into a single image. He must be almost there. At this rate, maybe he can Space Jump into another part of the universe, away from this prison.

"Almost...         Just a few more seconds and—"

                                                                                                 0:03...                                                                                                             0:02...                                                                                                                        0:01...

     Suddenly, the blue trail dissipates, and Sam can feel the power fueling his flight start to quickly drain away. He's falling, and fast. His descent is completely out of his control, and he smashes into an office building on his way to making a crater in the ground.

     Nova clenches his teeth in pain as he stands up and looks around at the damage. Well, it looks like escape is kind of out of the question...

Xandarian? Sam's pretty sure he's heard that word before. Probably during one of his dad's stories.

Mom, I’m a Nova now. That means I am a superhero. And superheroes do things like fly to the moon and… I don’t know… pretend they don’t know about the skate park because they have a secret identity.

Hey, so this is just an FYI to all the Marvel Comics people out there! I'm currently trying to find all of the comics in Sam!Nova's continuity. I have all of the Nova issues (as far as I know), but collecting all his appearances in chronological order is proving to be difficult. I have synopses of some of the comics, but I'd really like to find the whole thing somewhere online to make sure I get all the details right!

Personality:

     Before Sam Alexander became Nova, his father would tell him and his sister amazing, action-packed tales of his experiences throughout the universe, saving planets and rescuing species with his skilled team of Nova Centurion. Sam thought the stories were the drunken rambling of a man who lost his ability to tell real-life from fantasy. When one day Sam's dad goes missing, the boy goes out to find his father, only to accidentally injure himself and land in the hospital. There, he meets Rocket Raccoon and Gamora, from whom he learns that his father's stories were true, and that Sam now has the duty to put on the Nova helmet and help save the universe.

     When Sam first started, he wasn't very good at using his Nova powers. He would start flying unintentionally with no idea how to stop. At one point, he crashed into the moon. However, with the help of Rocket Raccoon and Gamora, he soon gets a handle on the new powers and uses them to help defend the universe.

     Personality-wise, Sam is relatively immature and quick to act. He occasionally inserts some quips aimed at his enemy, similar to how Spider-man fights. Sam clashes with Spider-man in the Ultimate Spider-man universe for the right to lead his team, and because of this, he always seems like he needs to outperform the other. This has caused quite a bit of trouble for S.H.I.E.L.D. in the past. Sam also seems to always have something to prove, and has a bit of cockiness to his personality as well. He boasts about his superiority, possibly because he doesn't know his limits. He is also often sarcastic, often adding a snarky comment whether it was needed or not.

Abilities:

     His helmet grants him these powers and abilities because of its access to the Nova Force.

Flight: As Nova, Sam is able to fly at great speeds.

Superhuman Strength: Sam has access to the same strength as that of a centurion from the Nova Corps.

Concussive Blasts: Like most Novas, Sam is able concentrate the power of the Nova Force into a beam or a ball of energy and fire it from his hands.

Limited Telekinesis: While training with Gamora and Rocket Raccoon, Sam was able to move Rocket Raccoon's favorite gun with his mind. This power seems limited and he is the only Nova ever shown to use this power.

Universal Translation (Passive): The helmet can make any alien species language appear to him as English.

Cosmic Awareness (Passive): Sam's Nova helmet flashes him different colors to depict different scenarios. It also allows him knowledge of most situations going on near him.

Weapon of Choice:

Nova Helmet: Without this helmet, Sam is unable to access any of the above abilities.
