Mannn... actually I just thought about what Steve told Dustin in S5 Vol 2 about Eddie's sacrifice being useless, and I started thinking deeper... and what if...

Eddie knew the sacrifice was useless, but he didn't exactly do it to save time for Dustin, but he did it cause he wanted to die.

Listen- listen. I mean, even before he met Dustin and the gang, he's been selling and maybe even taking drugs. Plus he's failing a lot of classes and had been held back in school for years, so he doesn't see much of a future for himself.

Then came Chrissy's death, which traumatized him, and on top of that, the police suspect him of the murder. Then Jason's gang starts to hunt him down with the intent to kill. Which scares him even more, especially as his own town thinks he's a murderer.

So in the end, he thought about what would happen if he returns to Hawkins (Even worse than if he doesn't) and realized that this was a perfect time to end his suffering finally, but since he didn't want Dustin to think he did suicide, he framed it as a heroic sacrifice.

This feels canon to me 😭😭😭
