What did your patient do?
Ask to be transferred, but then returned in the most dramatic of ways which left a huge, gaping hole of legal issues for us to clean up. Not his fault, I guess. It is my job, after all.

[Rowan takes them, smiling] Hey, hey, if youâre Hannah, then Iâm Rowan. [she nods resolutely] But thanks for the doughnuts. Hopefully, it is only confectionery sugar. [she chuckles and plops down onto the ground, situation herself as she goes about opening the package] are you going to join me, or go on and wander some more?
Of course. [With a small sigh, Hannah sits down beside her and crosses her ankles.] I had two this morning, and I don't feel any deathly illness yet.
Like theyâd believe me if I did? Either way, I wonât tell. [she takes the water and the pills, and swallows down the pills. She winces noticeable, and her visions blurs with the pain of that simple action] So⊠where have you been?
I had to go out of state to handle some issues a patient of mine caused. There are a lot of repercussions that fall back on us - the staff here - when this go to hell anywhere with our patients. Even if the absolute best of intentions were in it all.
Patient Rowan Janz. Nice to meetcha, Hannah. [she grins in return, though her eyes reflect more concern] Sure thing - unless theyâre poppy seed.
[She takes the small package of doughnuts from her purse and holds it out to her.] Plain glazed, and confectionery sugar, Miss Janz.
Well, let us hope that the chain of donut moguls that supply them donât have it out for their unwitting customers, then. [she chuckles shortly] Hm. No one much ever puts thought into the way things are spoken, from what Iâve seen. Good on you,⊠Donut Lady? [Rowan laughs]
Doctor Hannah Vanger, but you can just call me Hannah if you want. [She smiles tiredly.] Do you want a doughnut? I think they're safe.
Three broken ribs, a minor concussion, a bruised windpipe, and a sprained hand. Good enough reasons?
[She sighs and hands her both a bottle of water and two simple pain relievers, both retrieved from her purse.] Yes. But don't tell anyone.
I think weâre all physically dead, you know, regardless of the mental and emotional aspects of that question. The opposite of death would be birth, right? So wouldnât that make life the halfway mark between the two?
I've always thought the opposite of death to be life, personally. But... I suppose that would make sense. Life is a constant state, where as death and birth are so very brief in comparison. So, with your words in mind, I guess I'm more like four-fifths dead.
Half dead. Iâve always liked that idiom.
Oh, me too. It describes so much yet so little. Is it physical, mental, emotional? Hard to say.
What kind of donuts? Not cyanide powered, are they?Â
Are you particularly lost, or justâŠas you said, wandering?
I wouldn't know, actually. They were store bought. Fancy that... But, anyway, yes. Wandering... The way you said that describes it perfectly.
Got any painkillers you feel like sharing?
That depends entirely upon what you need them for, since I can get fired for sharing those.
Does anyone need anything? I'm half dead but I need to be occupied, disregarding the fact that I've been wandering around for the past eight hours or so. I have donuts I can share...?
Okay...
Thereâs a mystery book about food?!
[She holds up the book.] Yes! Although, really, it just makes you question why we eat canned foods... But, hey, garden fresh is better anyhow!
Okay...
Letâs see⊠Something new. Something⊠Iâve never heard of.
Have you ever read Canned? I would suggest it. It's a children's book, yes, but I thought it was positively quirky and wonderful. Plus, I don't know anyone who can deny a mystery book about British canned goods.

Destiny isnât fixed, trust me on that. You wonât lose your wings, because you already told me you try to help everyone and that canât be wrong, can it?
You can never really be certain. You just have to...have faith.
Well, whatâs the use of that?
It makes hardship seem endurable - and everyone endures hardship, just as they have hope.c
Ah because not everyone has a guardian angel. So, I think you should just keep doing what youâre doing and see what happens.
But what if I'm actually doing the wrong thing, but the whole destiny-is-fixed thing ends up being right and I can't help it, and I lose my wings?
