We see Ed in clothes that aren’t his and how he is very obviously performing in them, whether he’s simply being silly and having fun or trying to fit in and be perceived a certain way with the upper crust (and being silly and having fun doing it).

And then, in the finale, we see Ed in his own clothes, but more than ever it is very clear that it is a costume he has on, and that he is performing based on what he’s wearing and how he’s being perceived by Izzy and the rest of the crew.

The very nature of Blackbeard and his legend is that the purpose of his clothing (and general appearance) is to have a certain effect on those around him. He may genuinely like the clothes he wears, but that’s not their priority. Ed has never prioritized himself in his life, really, til he met Stede and realized things could be different.
