Piestewa Peak
I have been in Phoenix for a little over four months now. I can honestly say that I am spending more time on trails out here than I did in New York. Most of the time I am hiking some of the trails right near my apartment, but I have ventured out a little bit to discover more of what the city has to offer. Two of my friends wanted to go for a hike a couple weeks ago so I tagged along! We set out…

Butterfield Lake Landing Reserve Trail
In the beginning of March my family and I set out to explore the Grand Lake Reserve in Redwood, NY. This was my first time checking out the nature preserve and it was a perfect day to do so. The weather was a bit chilly and little patches of snow decorated the woods. It was nice and sunny which made the snow shine and birds sing! We decided to walk along the Butterfield Lake Landing trail. This…
Favorite backpacking food
I feel that this post is long overdue for someone who loves the food involved with backpacking as much as I do. In my many miles of hiking and backpacking, I have come to know some of the tricks of the trade when it comes to backcountry meals. In this post I will talk about my favorite meals and snacks for on trail, as well as some advice when meal planning for outdoor adventures. Dinner time…
Sackets Harbor Historic Trail
In my efforts to embrace my local resources I have really enjoyed being on the Sackets Harbor Historic Trail. It’s a short walk (and an even shorter drive) from where I live. It is pretty accessible too with a relatively even gravel grade. I first started using this trail in fall of 2024. Since then I have walked, ran, and snowshoed on it quite a bit! The trail has quite a bit of history…
Cross Country Skiing in Snowtown, USA
In my efforts to make the most of Winter, I set a goal to try out cross country skiing this year. I found out last week that Watertown Parks and Rec Department offers ski and snowshoe rentals on the weekends, and decided to check it out. The rentals are available at the Thompson Park bathhouse on the weekends 9:30 am-3:00 pm. For city residents it’s $7 for boots, skiis, and poles. The attendent…
Being a walker
It has been a while since I have made it to the Adirondacks for hiking. When I first became interested in hiking I seemed to think that the only hikes to do or worth doing were in the ADK. But, over time, I have started to realize that that is not the case. Over time I have also realized that the root of hiking that speaks to me is the movement of walking itself. I love the way walking grounds…
Saranac Lake 6: McKenzie Mountain
McKenzie Mountain was the last of the Saranac Lake 6 for me to hike. It was fantastic! I completed this hike on July 28th, 2024 7:30 pm. I set off for this hike in the afternoon to try and beat some of the scorching summer heat. This was a wise choice because this was quite a sweaty hike. It could have been a combination of my out of “shapeness”, weather, and rugged trail. Cash and I got to the…

Cathedral Rock and Firetower: Wanakena, NY
In an effort to find a quick hike near Watertown, I stumbled upon Cathedral Rock and Firetower in Wanakena. The trail starts behind the Ranger School and there is a huge parking lot available. I went on a sunny Saturday and surprisingly I was only the third car in the lot. I assume it is not as popular as some of the better known high peak trails. Starting from the parking lot you begin walking…
The last of the Cranberry Lake 50
In May 2023 I hiked about 45 miles of the Cranberry Lake 50. I was not prepared for the black flies that met me on the trail, and left the trail early to spare myself from their wrath. So, I went back at the end of April to finish it up with my dog and boyfriend! We had great weather and no bugs. I just wanted to talk about those last couple of miles in regards to trail conditions, walking with…

Beginner hiking in the Adirondacks
I get asked a lot about the best hikes for beginners to do, so I figured, why not make a post about it? I love hiking in the Adirondacks and I want to make sure they are accessible to other people. So this post will be a ranked list of beginner hikes in the Adirondacks from easy to more difficult (ones that I have personally been on) and what to expect on those trails. I hope this helps out…

Thru hiking hygiene
I talk about hiking and thru hiking a fair amount. I normally get the questions “do you go alone?” “aren’t you scared?” and “what do you do about bears???” These are relatively easy and comfortable questions to answer. But recently I was talking with someone who reads my blog, and they asked “what do you do about your period?” Now that is a good question. And not a comfortable one everyone asks.…
