“Alright, if you say so Zarcy…” She did as he had suggested, moving her arm into position as gently as she possibly could. Her head and eyes kept shifting towards the house to see if her Father would wake up and stop them, which thankfully seemed like he wouldn’t. Oh, he was going to freak out when he learned what she had done.

“Let’s…Let’s do this then. I hope this is going to work…”

Zarc nods and doesnt waste any more time. He makes the cut on his won arm first before gently pressing with his claw and making the cut on Ray’s arm, only cutting deep enough to get a gentle flow of blood before placing their arms together so the blood could mingle, gripping her elbow securely but also adding dark tendrils around their arms to hold them together.

“You’ll feel it in a moment, I’m already starting to. Feel your magic. You’ll feel it growing and changing rapidly. The most notable will be that you’ll feel a direct link form with me. It’ll be always there, us able to sense the other and communicate mind to mind but it can be closed. I’ll teach you everything, I promise,” Zarc explained, a purr rumbling in his chest as he felt both of their magics and auras building. “Oh and our auras will entertwine. If you can see it you’ll be in for a treat, our auras interlocking and becoming one.”

Her cheeks blush again at his kiss, Ray moving an inch away from him to get some space. She didn’t mind his affection, just not constantly like he was doing at the moment. At least he promised he’d keep it less intimate though, which put Ray at ease a bit. However, what didn’t was the aspect of how they were going to bond themselves.

“You…You want me to cut myself? But how can I do that? I-I don’t really feel like getting a knife and puncturing my skin in such a way…Are you sure you can’t do it for me, gently with one of your claws? I don’t mind if it’s on the arm…”

“I was planning to do it with my claw, silly. I don’t want you cutting deeper than we need to,” he replied, shifting to roll up Ray’s sleeve up to the elbow. “Ready? We should do it now before your dad wakes up and tries to stop us. Our forearms are about the same length so if you hold right above my elbow once i make the cuts we’ll be fine.”

“That is true…” She nodded in agreement, thinking back on all the memories her and Zarc had together when they were younger. Ray was so happy back then, the dragon being the light in her dark world of imprisonment. He made all those years tolerable, and she wasn’t sure is she ever wanted to be apart from him again…If he could help back them, he could help now like he did before, right?

“Thank you for the information…” Her cheeks are still pink and they turn even pinker by his act of kissing the back of her hand. She rubbed her arm nervously again, her body seeming shake from nervousness. If there was going to be any changes in her life, now was as good a time as any to have them happen. So, she then slowly looks at him with a non-regretful expression.

“Zarc…I, I’d like to bond with you, for real this time. I…I think it be the best decision for me, and if it can help my family too…then it’s worth it. I don’t know if I’ll be your queen yet, but…I-I wouldn’t mind us being best friends forever. Just don’t try to force me into a romantic relationship. Got that lizard breath?”

Zarc burst out laughing at the lizard breath comment and kisses her cheek gently. “That’s fair, and we’ll do it the less intimate way,” he replied when his laughter died down to chuckles. “Basically, all we’ll have to do is make matching cuts and hold them together so our blood mingles and mixes together. Our magic will do the rest,” he explained, holding out his arm and tracing a line down the center to show her where he will make the cut. “When the binding is complete our skin will automatically heal as if nothing ever happened. Do you think you can tolerate that? if not, we can do it elsewhere as long as its matching and can be pressed together.”

“Yes, it is.” She nods, deciding to take a seat beside him in the grass. Her gaze doesn’t meet his as she rubs her arm nervously. The idea behind asking him about bonding got her nervous, but she is hopeful he won’t be too forceful with her.

“And, well…I wanted to talk to you about…bonding. You…You saved me back there Zarc. If you hadn’t come back for me, I would have still been my Father’s prisoner, and I…” Her cheeks flashed pink for a moment, turning away from him. “I just wanted to ask about how you were able to do that without us being bonded? And if we did bond…what would that mean? Would I become your Queen when you become King? L-Like I had in my dream?”

Zarc purrs and nuzzles her gently with a smile before pulling back enough to look her in the eyes. “In a way, we are bonded already. Not in the life force tied together sort of way, but people naturally create bonds with those they spend time with. We’ve grown up together, I drew upon our friendship to reach you.”

He stretched, wings fully extending and holding that for a minute before he relaxed and the wings folded again. “As for life force bonding...You would live as long as me and it’s a two way street. With a bond we both get a boost in power and you’d have just as much say in things that I would as well as have the ability to extend the lives of your family if they and you so chose. We’d be equals and it’s very simple to bond and only hurts for a moment.”

He smiled wider then and lifted Ray’s hand and kissed the back of it. “You would only become my queen if you wanted it. I would never force that role upon you. It is a mantle that must be your choice and yours alone.”

“Okay…” Ray slowly approached the front door, opening it ever so slightly before walking in and being amazed at how pretty it was. There was a certain level of hominess that reminded her of her old home, and she figured Zarc did that on purpose. Either way, she decided that the room next to a workshop would be best for her father since he could be near his work at all times.

On the other hand, she decided to take a room near the kitchen, so it be easy for her to cook. It had been a while since she had cooked something, so she was looking forward to that.

“Reiji..can you handle Father while I go talk to Zarc…alone? There is something I need to discuss with him with no interruptions. So, if Father wakes up please handle him until we return.”

Reiji nods and carries Leo to his new room and sets about tucking him in. Zarc is outside still, resting under a tree, tired from flying both ways in one day as well as being up all night but still he opens his eyes and smiles at Ray as she approaches.

“So, is the cottage everything you could have ever possibly dreamed of?” he asked curiously, standing back up so he wouldn’t have to crane his neck to look up at her.

At Zarc’s call, she snapped out of her thoughts and looked up to see the sun rising in the east. Ray usually never got to see them since she often slept in, but the sight before her was really something special. It gave her hope that that this was a new day for them all, and things were going to be okay in the end. Though, her Father still worried her.

“Wow…” Ray said in awe as they landed, gazing over the cottage and admiring the little touches. “This is really wonderful, Zarcy. Who knew you’d be good at organizing such good architecture and design? Though, what should we do about my Father? He’s still asleep…”

Zarc purrs and smiles, shifting back to humanoid form and stretching. “I just went by what I knew you liked and other elements of comfort,” he replies humbly.

Reiji smiles and shakes his head. “I’ll carry father in, Ray. You go in and decide which room is going to be his, ok?” Something told him that it’d all be alright, that seeing Ray safe and happy with him in this new location with little to no dragon interaction and plenty of humans around will calm Leo down.

“I suppose…” His words help comfort the girl, even if it’s small. He was right, at least Ray had her family and important objects with her. Still, so much was going to change once they got back to the valley. What would her father say to her? Would he even cooperate? Only time would tell…

Ray got back on Zarc’s back and was quiet as they journeyed back to the valley. Her eyes were always focused on her father, who luckily did not wake once during the trip. He was in for a big wake-up call when he would wake up.

Zarc flew quietly, letting Ray lose herself in her thoughts, Reiji keeping his arms and the blanket around her to keep her warm as they flew. As the sun started to rise, Zarc was over the valley. He made a soft call to Ray and told her to look up, knowing she loved sunsets and wondered if sunrises would be the same.

Decreasing his height gradually, he circled and touched down gently in front of a picturesque cottage a short walk from Shun’s yard, its flowerbeds full of flowers. Laying Leo on the grass gently, he moved a few feet away to be able to lay down without hitting him and made a chuffing sound. “Ray, Reiji, welcome to your new home. It was completed yesterday and its plenty big enough for the three of you,” he told them.

“Good to hear. I couldn’t live with myself if you hurt my father Zarcy.” She replied, getting off the dragon and heading back into the manor. Grabbing a bag or two from the main room, she started to fill them with essentials like Leo’s research journals, Ray’s spell-books, and other sentimental items. The girl then stared at her old home fondly for a moment, closing her eyes as she slowly said goodbye before walking out to meet the others.

“I…I can’t believe I’m really…leaving. This has been my home my whole life. Even if it was like a prison, it’s been…my only home I’ve ever had. It’s…a bit bittersweet, Zarc.”

“Hey...all it is is a building on some land,” Zarc murmured softly, nuzzling her gently. “A home isnt one place, it’s where your heart is. Your home is coming with you. You have your father, you have your brother, you have anything you deemed important enough to take...This is no longer your home, not once we leave because your heart is going with you.”

“You did that….so effortlessly, and painlessly too…I forgot how strong your magic can be Zarc, and that’s…kinda scary.” She pointed out, making sure she was close to her brother as they started to move again. Ray explained to her that behind the manor was another generator, and destroying that would allow them to pass through. That was what her father invented to keep out dragons and anyone who wasn’t her and Leo.

“Are you sure my Father is going to be okay? He won’t be very happy when he wakes up Zarc.”

Zarc made an amused sound and tenderly picked Ray’s father back up before turning his head to look at Ray. “Is there anything you want before I blow up the generator? We most likely wont be back so you should grab anything you want to take with us,” he told her, spreading his wings and flying down to the grass and landing after making sure the manor door was unlocked. “And dont worry, your father is only deep asleep. He’s completely unharmed.”

As soon as the coast was clear, the barrier around Ray fell as she quickly ran to Zarc. Not having much time, she decided to sit behind Reiji and hold onto him tight. He’d ensure that she wouldn’t fall during the trip. However, just as she managed to get secure, the door to her room busted wide open.

“W-What is going on here?!” Leo spat. “And you! You give back my daughter this instant! She doesn’t wish to be with a monster like you!”

“She climbed on my back on her own free will,” Zarc growled, shifting his plates to hold the siblings securely. “And I’m taking her back to where she’s actually happy. You’re in luck though, Ray requested that I take you with us which is why we even came back in the first place. Now hold still.” His golden eyes glowed as he accessed his magic and cast a sleep spell on Leo, catching him as he fell and busied himself with wrapping Leo snugly in a blanket so he couldn’t squirm if he woke up before they got home.

“Ray, do you know how to disable the big barrier? If not, I’m going to have to drag him through the tunnel we dug.”

Soon enough, she awoke and wiped her eyes slowly as she yawned. It felt weird waking up with her memories again, but there wasn’t anytime to dwindle. Ray quickly got under the bed, and used her magic to put a barrier around herself for extra protection. She then sent a pulse to Zarc to notify him that she was ready to begin.

“Let’s hope this works…”

Once Zarc felt the pulse he soared up to the roof and gripping the edge, flew up, the roof buckling and coming off with a crunch, the splinters raining down into Ray’s room. As soon as he let the roof fall to the ground with a crash, Zarc landed in the room and called for Ray to get on his back. He was going to have to move fast as soon as Leo came into sight so he needed Ray secure on his back before then.

“Tearing off the roof would remove the issue of Father’s barrier…” She replied before slowly nodding. “And yes, of course I want to take him with us! And I’m sure Father will come after us if you do grab me. He isn’t going to let me go easily this time…You already saw what he did to me in order to ensure that…”

Zarc nodded and stepped back. “In that case you need to wake up and take cover under your bed to protect yourself from any falling debris,” he told her as Reiji kissed her cheek and stepped back as well, both of them leaving her dream and returning to the waking world, Zarc shifting his plates to make room for Ray again and taking to the air, Reiji holding on tight, hovering so he could watch Ray get under her bed so he wouldn’t hurt her on accident.

“I see…” She said slowly as Reiji hugged her, closing her eyes as she held him back and rubbed his back. It was nice to have friends and family around, a support system that more than one person like if she was with her father. Zarc had been that support system for years, but it took her until just now to really important it was. She was lucky to have Zarc, it seemed.

“So…what do we do now? I know Father will probably come in to check on me sometime tonight. I recall him mentioning he was staying up late to work. We don’t have much time probably.”

Zarc nods and nuzzles her, resuming his humanoid form. “It all depends on what you want to do. Reiji and I are up on the roof of your room so we’re out of sight regardless. I can tear the roof off of your tower but if you want to take your father to the valley with us, I have to make sure he comes running so I can snatch him up,” he told her.

Ray nodded slowly at Zarc’s words, slowly moving to approach him and touch his head gently. She wasn’t sure what touching him would do exactly, but she trusted Zarc. However, at her little brother’s words it took her back. If Zarc was able to do that without her being bonded, then it must have shown how much he cared for her, and she didn’t sense he was doing it just because of his crush either.

“Yes…How were you able to do that? I know you care, but…it seems impossible…”

Zarc purred when her hand rested on his head. He poured the fact that he was real and here for her through the contact on his snout, poured the sheer joy he felt when flying, going wherever he pleased, the feel of grass beneath his feet, anything that contradicted the cell, purring and nuzzling Ray when the cell and chains melted away, happy that it worked.

“As for how I was able to bring you back...we’ve been together for years. Did your father really think he could erase our friendship and bond of trust so easily?” he asked as Reiji came up and hugged Ray happily. “Nothing is impossible. Love, whether romantic or platonic, is the strongest force alive. Its greater than any magic.”
