Dear Emma,

Discovering you and your work five years ago was a life-changing experience for me. I’m really not exaggerating. In Much Ado you initiated my love for Shakespeare; in W;t my love affair with John Donne. My relationship with Jane Austen slightly predates my knowledge of you, but S&S is still the only Austen adaptation that I truly love as much as the novel.Through both your films and your interviews you’ve introduced me to so many authors, actors, and comedians who are now among my favorites.

More importantly, you introduced a very sheltered girl to feminism. At age 16 I read your letter to your 16-year-old self, and it became like armour against the temptation to diet and worry about my weight. Your work with organizations, such as Helen Bamber’s, has taught me so much about human trafficking and activism. You’re truly my role model of a creative, compassionate, intelligent woman.

You deserve all possible happiness on your birthday and every day!

Hello darling. On the off chance you are actually reading this message, I am writing to you in hope of thanking you for everything you have done during the course of your amazing career. I love you so much, especially because you use the power you’ve earned with your boundless talent, in order to make a difference for the better in the world. The countless organisations you take part in are one fraction of that.

The other one is just simply spreading joy all around yourself and whilst doing so, showing people what’s right and what’s wrong. Having you as a role model has pulled me out of my every-so-often ocurring depression and that is the biggest gift one could ever give to me - you gave me back my smile and, more importantly, my life.
