Story Time in Korea (entry #17)
Ok, yeah forget about me updating everyday. I'm a liar, a cold hearted liar! However, I want to change, turn over a new leaf per se. So I will now tell you the truth: I'm going to update this when I feel like it hahaha. Don't worry, there won't be huge gaps between stories, but I'm just too lazy to update my blog everyday.
Anyway, enough of that, let's talk about my adventure on 남이섬 (Nami island)! This is a small, crescent shaped island located in 춘천 (Choon Chon) (another stop on the 춘천 bus tour). This island has grown in popularity after the highly popular film, "Winter Sonata" was filmed there. The drama was a hyper romantic love story that managed to make every Japanese woman wet between the legs for Korean men. I'm not kidding! I visited Japan back in 2003 and all the ladies were talking about Winter Sonata and how they wanted Korean husbands haha (A big step for unity between the feuding countries (^_-) ). The last episode had ended in 2002, so you know it must be pretty good to still be gushing over it a year later.
Before we get into all the cool things about this trip, let's start out with the funny things! (Cuz what better way to hook someone than to have what appears to be a vulva ?? : D)
… NO, this is not a road-map to a woman’s clitoris (wouldn't that be great though?)! It’s actually a map of how to have the best feng shui for your palace. Basically, a palace should have a mountain in the back and water in the front. This is called 배산임수 (bea-sa-nim-soo). Somehow this helped maintain a more level temperature throughout the year… I am sure that is just a likely excuse and that this is actually supposed to look like a vagina and people from the Joseon Dynasty were just secretly perverts HAHAHA.
This woman is in for a BIG surprise....
These kids are playing with an old torture device. Look how happy they are as they beat the snot out of their friend :D .
Gavin mimicking the ostrich.
Ok ok, now let's get back on track! xD
In order to reach the island Gavin and I had to take a small boat ride to it:
The boat was filled with happy tourists snapping pictures and talking to one another.
Once off the boat we could see that 남이섬 (Nami island) is beautiful and quite a lot more colorful during this time of year. The island was covered in a soft blanket of snow during the filming of Winter Sonata, leaving 남이섬 void of color.
Oh, and not only was Winter Sonata filmed here, but so was the movie, King and the Clown ( 왕의 남자). This movie was about an emperor with sever mommy issues who became very attached to his court jester *wink wink, nudge nudge *.
Here is where one of the scenes from the movie was filmed:
남이섬 also had some historical recreations and original items. These scenes made me feel like I was at the Renaissance Faire, but Korean... Which I suppose would make it the 조선축제 (Jō-san Choog-Jea) (I think that would translate to Joseon Faire lol).
These kimchi pots not only contributed to the traditional look of the island, but also serve a purpose! They are filled with fermented soy beans and oh boy, did it ever smell like it. The rich aroma of decomposing soy filled the air... and ya know what, it was actually pretty nice!
These are 장승 (jang-sung). They are placed at the the entrance of villages in the hopes that they will protect the village from diseases, evil spirits, and other misfortunes. The 장승 also served as sign posts allowing travelers to know that a village was nearby.
This is a 서낭당 (seonangdang). Basically this is a colorfully decorated tree with piles of rocks at its base. Travelers would place three stones on top of one of the piles and make a wish. There are five colors of fabric adorning the tree: red, yellow, white, blue, green. These colors represent the cardinal directions and are meant to word off misfortune.
This was a big rock with people's wishes tied to it. It's said that the wish is supposed to come true, but I have my doubts about that :P . We'll see.
Ok, I hope you enjoyed this entry and maybe even found it useful ^__^. Stay tuned for more pictures and stories.
