(i use this as a free alternative to scrivener - celeste). it has a novel/manuscript drafting feature, and different plotting tools, such as the “snowflake” tool, the “planning board,” the “grid planner”, the timeline, and many mindmaps. there is also a “challenge” mode that can be used for writing sprints! (i would recommend this for a first draft/zero draft :) - celeste

(this is genuinely one of my favourite resources!! it would be impossible to display everything i love about it but this is just the drafting area- the sidebar shows most of the features)

How To Write a Compelling Side Character

1) Give them a goal. Just like your protagonist, your side characters will become more complex if given a motive or agenda. Make sure you treat them like real people who have desires. What propels them forward, why are they in this story… what do they hope to accomplish?

2) Let them make an impact. Have their actions directly or indirectly effect the main plot and your protagonist. If the side character means something to the protagonist, they will mean something to the reader. Perhaps they gave your protagonist a shoulder to cry on, which then aided in the their journey.

3) Give them a theme. What lessons will this side character teach your protagonist (and the reader)? Take Redemption as an example: does this side character cause trouble for the protagonist the whole story, only to have a change of heart in the end?

4) Give them at least one unique quality. Something to remember them by, something that makes them easily distinguishable. A lavish accent, a brutal scar, a bad habit, an obsession with something. The list goes on and on.

5) Have something they did effect the ending. No matter how small of an impact they have on the ending, give them a part of it. Did they say something to the protagonist that gave them courage in the end? Did they steal something that would’ve made the ending easier? Did they alert the bad guys of the protagonist’s incoming?

6) Introduce them twice. First introduce the character passively, in a conversation or as a passing shadow in the background. Then formally introduce them a second time into the story officially.

The temperature suddenly dropped, our breath forming thick clouds that floated up towards the flickering lights. I tangled my fingers together, tried grabbing at the warmth that was fading away quickly. It was then that the door began to rattle, then shake, and then bust open with violent intent. Shards of the wood flew past us and in walked what we could only assume to be The Day Walker.

7) Give them a small arc. You already have your main characters to worry about when it comes to arcs, but you can easily deceive readers into believing that a side character has changed throughout the story. Your side character who was shaky and nervous on page 50, now stands tall and confident on page 230. They’ve changed, we just didn’t get to see how in great detail. You can add small scenes and details in between those pages suggesting the change.

8) Give them their own special setting. We all have places we prefer hanging out: a coffee shop, a street corner, the roof of a school, the mall. Anchor some of your side characters to a specific setting, that way it helps with your worldbuilding as well. Next time your main characters pass by that specific location, the readers might think of that side character. 

9) Allow some side characters to be forgettable. Sometimes it’s okay for a character to exist for one purpose and then to never be seen again. Don’t stress yourself out trying to make all your characters serve a higher purpose, because some people only exist in our lives for a short period of time. That’s just life.

Hi! Are you a non-native speaker of English who writes or wants to write in English? Then stay along for this masterpost of free writing resources for non-native speakers of English!

Before starting, I want to highlight that English is not my first language either, but I've been studying English since kindergarten and started to write fanfic in English when I was sixteen. Then I went to university in Scotland, and I now work as a proofreader and editor of academic works for Chinese students in the UK.

So, the resources you'll find in this post (under the cut) are things that I've been using almost daily for the past eight years, for fun and then uni and now work.

Whatever you choose to do, remember that you're amazing for knowing more than one language and that your linguistic repertoire enriches you immensely. If you write in your second (or third, or fourth) language, you're basically a hero already! You don't have to aim to write or speak like a native English speaker. Be proud of all your languages!

[Disclaimer: I have not checked for similar posts, so if there are some out there, I'm sorry. I just wanted to do this to help others with what I've learned and use!]

Language resources:

I'll start with the basics: my favourite translation tools.

Reverso Context: translation of words and phrases in context from texts taken from the web. On the other tabs of the website, you can find a grammar checker, automatic translator, synonyms, verb conjugations, regular dictionary, collaborative dictionary, and grammar resources!

Linguee: context translation, but with more language combinations than reverso, and with DeepL, one of the best automated translators the web has to offer for free. Seriously, I've had classmates in uni pass whole ass assignments translating them into French with DeepL.

Word reference: I use this a lot less than the others, but it's still a great online dictionary, and the forum can probably solve most of your more complex doubts about language! It also has word lists by topic, grammar and conjugation resources, and a collocation dictionary!

English resources:

Oxford Collocation Dictionary: I use this literally every day. It doesn't have all the words, but it's incredibly helpful to find which verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions go with the words you want to use.

Reverse dictionary: literally a reverse dictionary: you write in the definition, it gives you a lot of possible words. You can divide results depending on grammatical category, and even add filters if you're looking for something specific. (similar to "tip of my tongue" but better in my opinion)

Describing Words: usually gives you LOTS of examples for adjectives that go well with words, in case you don't quite know how to describe something in a more “poetic” way. If you find a word you don't know here, check it on one of the next to dictionaries.

Merriam-Webster: for definitions and synonyms. Very simple and clean layout, easy to use.

Cambridge Dictionary: Cambridge is, of course, the ultimate authority on “proper English”, so it's only fair that their online dictionary is one of the best around. It does have a lot of ads, but also a lot of different resources for each word, including examples, related words, synonyms, collocations, antonyms, and various levels of definition depending on complexity.

WikiDiff: if you're unsure about the difference between two words, wikidiff will give you two definitions side by side to compare.

Google Ngram: if you're unsure between two words and want to check which one is more commonly used, ngram is your friend. Very useful for academic writing, but it can be applied to creative writing and fiction too!

Spell checkers:

Grammarly: Grammarly is one of those things where you just have to believe the hype. I use it to check every work I send to my boss. It catches most things, and some even extra, so you have to be careful and use your own judgment when checking them, but it's incredibly useful.

LanguageTool: I've not been using this for long, and only as a browser add-on, but it's proven itself very useful, and for more languages than English!

How do you write scenery. I always having trouble writing a place where the characters is. Like do I have be specific around the surrounding or just say where it is.

Describing the Setting of a Scene

You should always do some level of description of the setting of a scene. If it's an area the reader can easily envision, either because you've already described it in a previous scene or because it's a common place like a school or grocery store, you only need to include a few relevant details. a guide to writing shy characters + for writers

disclaimer: from a girl who spent the first twenty years of her life being extremely shy , and has now almost overcome it completely . so the girl got experience 

There is a difference between being shy, and being quiet. A shy person can be talkative, a quiet person is not.

Just because somebody is shy, does not mean they don’t like talking to people! They’re most of the time, simply just afraid of being judged. 

SHY PEOPLE ARE NOT WITHOUT PERSONALITIES! Shy people have wants, needs and feelings, and a personality that is much bigger than their shyness!  Just because they don’t talk much, doesn’t mean that you can’t give them a rich personality! They might be afraid to show the world who they really are, but that doesn’t mean that under the surface, there’s not a person! Shy people are still real people, even though they sometimes may convince themselves they’re not! 

Being shy is not a personality trait. At least, it shouldn’t be normalized as one, or considered to be one. Most shy people have a desire to change their ways and engage more in the conversation. They are not happy with their current situation. A quiet person, is probably more content with their life, and doesn’t wish to be more talkative. 

Most shy people are capable of holding a proper conversation over the internet, but when they meet this person in real life, no matter how good friends and comfortable this shy person feels with them, the conversation will turn awkward, and they’ll be quiet, and not say much. 

Shy people actually has a lot to say, and a lot to contribute to the conversation. They’re just not sure how to say it out loud, thinking that their opinion doesn’t matter that much. 

A shy person does not have to be an introvert. They can be extroverts, because, again, one is an emotion, the other is a personality trait.

No one chooses to be shy. 

A shy person will try to contribute to the conversation, they want to talk, but they can’t. As a result, they’ll beat themselves up over it, thinking they’ve embarrassed themselves. 

Shy people are not push-overs. You might be able to make them an easy target, but the second that person gains some confidence and starts believing in themselves, trust be given, you’re not going to reach them.

And no, they don’t hate you. An old classmate of mine once asked me if I hated my class, because I never spoke a word to anyone. So here’s the thing, no, most shy people aren’t quiet because they hate everyone, or think they’re better than you. It’s the complete opposite, actually. 

There is always a reason as to why somebody is shy, and a lot of the times, it boils down to insecurities, bullying, thinking they’re not good enough… there’s a lot of reasons.

Also, I saw the show was looking for pedestrians, you know, background actors (local USA citizens, ofc), but I decided to try it out lmaooooo as if I had the money to go to the states, even if it is ST. Write a Flash Fiction Piece

Flash fiction is characterized as being less structured than a short story and more focused on the detail of a moment or collection of moments. It’s much more condensed and tends to be packed with vivid imagery. Shoot for under 500 words. Here are some prompts:
