looking at ur control gif and thinking. thinking. control resonance drops in less than two months and im still unclear what the Hiss chant means or what it does. it means something for sure and that something must be related to jesse. but it must also have something to do with like the Goal of the Hiss. the board maybe?

The way I interpret it, it's an expression of the Hiss itself communicating, but also of the people it possesses, absorbing pieces of personality and thought, so the result is naturally distorted by this merging and clashing of disparate parts. A lot of the lines seem like they could refer to different characters and sometimes more than one at a time, and it changes very subtly when Marshall becomes part of it.

I think the Hiss is not just a singular entity, but a piece of one that has broken off from a greater whole in some way. Some kind of connection between Hiss and Polaris and Hedron, possibly (and whatever connection between entities would likely be reflected in connections between characters). There are a lot of Significant Numbers in Control - 2, 3, 5, 7 - so who knows. Since Control Resonance has the Intrusive Pattern, whatever it may be, I'm assuming we'll learn more about resonances.

I love that Tau so far is a shithole..... the Colonization Machines, who utilize caste-based society and believe in their inherent supremacy over all other beings, suck just as bad as the piece of shit empire that created them.

The Old Peace made me think that they were going to retcon all of the nasty behavior before, but the context from Constellations and now the Tau demo have made it clearer that the Old Peace Sentients were a splinter group caught between a rock (wider Sentient society) and a hard place (the Orokin), and considered the Orokin, of all people, the lesser evil. not to mention the (manufactured) conflict between the Old Peace Sentients and the Anarchs (as in, Dax and Grineer similarly exploited by the Orokin) while the Golden Lords sat back and laughed and pulled their strings.

Sentient society is just like Corpus society and Grineer society: crushed under Orokin boots and yearning to escape that by wearing the boot themselves, not by throwing off the yolk of what created them and shaped them (and so the Corpus exploit and exploit and remain haunted by a man who coveted what the Orokin had; and so the Grineer dominate and dominate and remain subordinated by Orokin ghosts living within Grineer forms). just like the Man in the Wall, absorbing all of the miserable cruelty of the world and vomiting it back up and lashing out at all beings because some beings mutilated it and used those parts of itself to multiply that cruelty. copies and duplicates and mirrors and doppelgangers all the way down, still haunted by an empire that's been dead for an age

I can see how both the Archons, Erra, and Roathe’s own perspective (if accurate!) all paint at least SOME factions of the Sentient’s as being less angry at the Orokin for any injustices and MORE angry that THEY weren’t the ones on top, as they deserved to be, so the idea that Sentient’s can act greedy or self destructive on their own accord is, I think, not much of a surprise in itself

The difference was that the Archon’s had the excuse of The Old War and their Trauma alongside their Jingoism.

the Sentients were literally designed to colonize extraterrestrial planets. with the failure of the Zariman effort, they were the first settlers on Tau, which is pretty explicitly stated as "stolen stars"

by a being who is catastrophically and excessively pissed off at all life that has ever lived, to be sure, but "flayed flesh for stolen stars" is a core theme. even if there wasn't a single shred of life in the Tau system, they traveled there to extract resources.

there's the implication that Praghasa and Hunhow were the progenitors of the Sentients, the generally stratified nature of how Sentients organize themselves, the Archons and the mentions of Orokin and other human mimicry, all of Hunhow's dialogue acknowledging how Erra has become no better than an Orokin and Hunhow's own role in that, the hive-mind concept, the recent Hunhow dialogue about how the Bloom lured other Sentients away from him, the awful way that Hunhow and Erra treated Natah. so much that the Lotus would rather burn herself to a crisp than be caught between Ballas and Hunhow, or let these children who are just like her be caught there - just like the Old Peace Sentients, caught between the rock and the hard place.

the Sentients didn't choose their circumstances and didn't choose to be made the way they were, so they are deeply sympathetic regardless. I'm expecting to see other, smaller parts of the Tau system where groups of Sentients have carved out decent, kinder lives for themselves, because that's what people do.

but it would have been goofy if Tau was some kind of harmonious paradise of society. which would have ironically matched how the Orokin propagandized their colonization efforts - but the call is coming from inside the house, and so the rot followed.

so I'm glad The Old Peace has a stronger context that it's those specific Sentients who banded together and wanted freedom from their circumstances and who didn't have a single good option because of how much the Orokin and the Sentients collectively had dominated not one but two solar systems. it places the Old Peace Sentients neatly into the same role as the Lotus and the Tenno and all of the smaller factions attempting to hold their ground against the tide of empire and its children, and it remains consistent with how the rest of the world is broadly constructed around the theme of dead empire and its devastating consequences and ghosts and functionally undead remnants and roaches who just won't die.
