ADAD1001 final assessment:

After seeing couple of the other ADAD1001 class art work presentation, I felt that the monopoly board idea was a bit tacky and obvious for people to tell what the are art piece was about. I like the circular natural of simple and beautiful nature of Aprils art work and collaboration with one of the other student, so strip the monopoly tiles, we shape the position of the the lights ( more circular) and left faint reference to the game of monopoly by keeping the red houses; quickly change this when Tiffany and Tamara were presenting. upon reflection I ultimately I think the changes made the piece better, I think as well if would of gone and taken photo’s of the actual regions sydeny, so the 35mm could develop proply the work could of been better.

I experimented and tested putting the negative 35mm film around a light globe for 30 mins, which result in smoke coming of the top of the light globe leaving a burnt smell to the air and a little bit of the film melted onto the globe. the idea of sticking the 35mm on the light globe it not going to work.

This final piece is continuing with the theme of perception, in this piece it tries to reveal some of the different stereotyping, stigmatisation around the different class divisions, cultural, subcultural and ideologies that are projected throughout some of the geographical regions of Sydney. By undercovering some of these uncomfortable and confronting postcode prejudices through the everyday microaggression towards people from different areas, to the more clear and unrelenting internet subreddit of people ripping into an extended amount of suburbs, sinisterly typecasting each with the anonymity of being hidden behind computer, and final The Daily Telegraph adding some Sydney centric labels to the mix. The pieces aim to achieve this by channelling these perceptions into a mock Monopoly board installation allowing the audience to walk around the different regions of Sydney that are presented on the board. With each tiled region having red house accompanying it, with the roofing of the red house being contracted from developed 35mm negative film, with each individual regional house’s negative film roofing having images or words displaying the perceived impression of each region. At the bottom of the red house lays a LED torch shining from the bottom towards the ceiling illuminating the negative film roof and then further projecting the images of the film onto the roof of the installation room. Negative film is also used as metaphor to distinguish that the words or images that are on film are negative and often hurtful, thus allowing the audience to question negative aspects and opening up conversation around the topic.

when I got the 35mm film develop, the film didn’t develop as you can not take photos with a 35mm camera of other images of the computer screen, as the screen distort the images making impossible to see what is on the 35mm film. This was lucky for me, as the chemist didn’t charge me $80 bucks for developing the film and bad for me, as now I have 35mm film that you can not till what the image is meant to be.

plan b was to use the hurtful stereotypes that I collect from the internet and write them onto the 35mm film, but first I to test to see if work. I experimented by using a maker pen on the negative and writing the word hipster over the top. The result from testing was that the develop negative film you could write on the develop film and it wouldn’t rub off after 10-20 seconds of letting the ink dry. however on the the piece of film underdeveloped I tested, you write on it, it rubs of all the time.

To get the images for project of the different Sydney regions, I type into google images stereotypes of each of the regions of Sydney and then took photos with 35mm camera of the images that came up, here is a map of the photo’s I took of the order of the photo taken

I personal do not agree with these often hateful and negative stereotypes portrayed in these images.

I went out with my sparky mate to get materials for project, so that he could help me make the titles, that if you stepped onto them would light up each region, however after a day looking around and discussing the project, with My sparky mate. He told me that it could be done for cheap and very dangers, or safe expensive. The sparky later ended up coming up with the idea to use cheap LED flash light to illuminate each region, which would be cheap and safe.

At one stage before I had even had taken a photo or filmed anything from the suburbs I had the idea of using a monopoly board and trying to program the tiles, so that if you step onto them it would then trigger film that would from that suburb it would play from that suburb. I try for about 2 hours trying to figure it out how to make this on the internet with no like, but, I did however come cross how to make a pressure plate switch with cardboard that when you step on it turn on a light. as seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6RXu0pYUVI .

After gathering some of the stereotypes, I wanted to go each of the different suburbs or regions of Sydney to film, or take photos of each area and make a film, but then I realise it would take up to much time so canned the idea.

when it came to for the third and final assessment I decided to try flesh out ideas that were never used from the ADAD1001 second assessment, I brainstormed in more depth into the ideas about using the different regions of Sydney portraying the different identities and nuances that potential exists in each region, suburb and or/ postcode Sydney. I started by finding out some of the perceived views of each region, by using the of the internet.

ADAD1001 final assessment:

the first idea started out as half-baked idea for the second assessment (group assessment) working with the concept of “perception”. I original want to explore the projected different stereotypes from people of different suburbs and rise a point around postcode prejudice. I never pitch as an idea to the group for our group assessment as the idea wasn’t fully formed and didn’t know how to link it to one of the pieces in the learnt in the perception week.
