Hal nodded softly, “Yeah- I can see that, I can see that. Need to let them run loose for a while.” He waved a hand lightly, offering the woman a grin, “What are you going to do with all the time off you get, then? Besides the school shit that happens during summer.”

“My only real plan is to relax,” Harleen replied, laughing under her breath. Yes, there would be things to prepare for the new year but the advantage of being a school nurse rather than a teacher meant that she was less busy than the teachers would be- and could enjoy her summer more. “And recharge for the new year. The first week or so is always hectic. Especially with the new kindergarten students coming in. A lot of them get overly emotional.”

“You know where I could get pet stuff in this town?” He asked, finally admitting defeat after an hour of aimless wandering. Jamie would’ve googled the answer but his phone was so old it flipped open and he’d left his computer in his apartment (which still had no wifi) - it was just easier to ask and deal with the bruised ego for the rest of the day. “Not dog and cat stuff but, like, bird stuff.”

His damn parakeet wasn’t going to feed itself.

“Bird stuff?” Harleen blinked at him for a few moments. Well, that was definitely something that no one had ever asked her. Pets were common in town, of course. They always had been. But it was rare to see someone have any animal outside of a cat or a dog. Those two were most definitely the most common pets all around. Some children had rodents as pet, hamsters or gerbils; some of them even had rabbits. But birds? Oh, no, those were not the most common pet in town. But she supposed that there were people out there who did have them.

“Um…I think at the local pet shop.” Sticking her hands in her pockets the witch nodded slightly towards the center of town. “It’s over on Main Street.”

Liya held a coffee between her hands, smiling at the other’s words. “Ah yes summer. The season that makes everything better huh? Men with no shirts, sunburned to shit and women who wear skimpy outfits. My favourite.” A cheeky grin taking over her face. “Although I must admit I’m not a huge fan of hot weather. Nor the screaming brats off from school.”

She shrugged though and waved a hand. “I’m more of a winter baby. Even if I do really love summer clothes. Are you looking forward to summer then by any chance?”

“Well, I work at a school filled with all those so-called screaming brat,” Harleen responded after a moment. She wasn’t exactly in agreement with the categorization of children like her students- but she was also very aware that not everyone was a fan of children. It wasn’t something she could completely understand as she had always been fond of them but everyone was entitled to their own opinion. Unless people hurt kids because they weren’t overly fond of them? She couldn’t really judge much.

“Summer means months off from work so you might say I’m a little fond of it, yeah.” Not that she minded the kids. She actually liked seeing them at the school. But she did enjoy the time off and the chance to spend time to herself- or get out of town for a while.

Both things were very astute assumptions that he was partially inclined not to note on. “Weres.. what?” If he wasn’t easily forthcoming in the middle of shifting then there was no way he’d play along when he appeared to be like any other human in town. Playing dumb was like second nature to him. Although most could say that he was horrendously terrible at playing the part.

Take this instance for example. His words weren’t that convincing and the look on his face was even less so. Both eyes were widened slightly and he did his best to look confused, but the expression of discomfort and surprise was written all over his face instead.

“Almost convincing,” Harleen muttered under her breath. The operative word there being almost. If she were human she might have even been tempted to buy it for no other reason than he had tried to come across like he truly didn’t know what she was talking about. The problem was that she wasn’t, in fact, human. Not a were, of course, but still someone who could sense another supernatural being. As such?

As a matter-of-fact, she almost felt bad about not buying it because he seemed to try to be pulling it off so strongly. Why? Well, she couldn’t even begin to guess. Especially in a town like theirs. There you were more than free to be honest about what you were, especially to the other non-human residents. But to each their own, she supposed. “I take it you don’t like the summer?”

Hal was incredibly excited for the changing of the seasons- yeah, the snow melt left everything a little soggy for a while, but right after that came warm days and flower blooms and baseball season. And, disconnected from students for the most part- except for living in a town full of them- quite a few of the negative elements of springtime and the impending summer just didn’t impact Hal.

“I don’t see a problem with the here and now.” Hal said to the woman who had spoken, offering a smile, “Though, I’m excited for summer weather too.”

“There’s nothing particularly wrong with spring,” Harleen replied with a very slight shrug of her shoulders. She had no problem with the season itself. After all, for witches it made it easier to connect with nature once winter passed and the plants actually began to grow again. She had actually never met a single witch who hated spring. Or even summer for that matter. Fall had its advantages as well. Winter was where things got a little murky, at least for her.

“I work in a school though so we all sort of look forward to summer,” she explained. “I love the kids. They just get anxious and rambunctious as the year starts coming close to ending and we look forward to the summer so they can be free to let out their crazy energy.”

This was hell. There was no other way to say it- it was absolute hell. There were parts of his body that burned that shouldn’t. Take his eyes for example. Why in the world did those burn? Truth was, he knew the answer, but it sure didn’t stop him from complaining anyways. Ambrose knew the signs of a heat on a conscious and subconscious level, and he did everything he could to make sure it’d go smoothly. Which was a pretty rich hope, if he was being honest, because all heats sucked major ass.

He was in the middle of taking a big swig from his newly purchased water bottle. The thing still tasted like new metal, but the contents were cold and that’s all that mattered. “The weather’s only gonna get hotter- doesn’t that make a ton of people cranky?” Ambrose couldn’t help but ask after his mouthful.

“I guess it depends on the person.” For Harleen the heat wasn’t so bad. Perhaps because she was a witch and the weather affected her normally; perhaps it was because of her affinity for fire. It usually meant that heat didn’t bother her all that much, to be honest. That wasn’t necessarily a good thing, having such a deep affinity for fire. It meant a few unfortunate accidents when she was a kid if she was being completely honest. But that was mostly in the past now. She hadn’t had a fire related accident in a long, long while. “I guess it would be worse for weres.” After all, didn’t they tend to have a higher body temperature than humans or witches did? Summer was probably hell on them so she supposed that for them it was terrible. They probably couldn’t wait for the season to be over so they could stop overheating and go back to normal. “But at least the town won’t be running rampant with college students just waiting to get out.”

The changing of the seasons was driving people crazy, Harleen was sure of it. As the pollen flew the temperaments of the town seemed to shift. With the college nearing the end of the school year, summer threatening to descend far too soon onto the parents of the town and the elements all aligning in different ways? It was a wonder to her that everyone was keeping themselves somewhat sane. Somewhat being the operative term. Everyone seemed to be running themselves a little mad as of late.

“Summer will be better,” she said, not sure if she was trying to convince herself or the people around her. “The weather may suck but everything else will have calmed down a bit.” At least for the people without children. For those who had to deal with children all summer? All the power to them.

her anger fizzled out when she saw her sister, unable to snap at someone she loved and who had her face. at least, for something that wasn’t her fault. “i mean, he just left when the dog ran out.” she offered with a wink, walking up to her sister and accepting the coffee happily. “my neighbor’s, she had to go out of town and begged me to watch the dog, who i now hate.” she finished with a shrug, taking a sip of her drink happily. “i can’t even explain how amazing this coffee tastes.” it could have been crappy and she still would have loved it after her harsh wake up.

“Thought you could use the pick me up. Call it sisterly instinct.” Harleen offered her sister a slight smile, her shoulders rising and falling briefly in a shrug. It was as close to the truth as she could manage. All three of the girls had always shared a bond stronger than most siblings- stronger than the one they had with their older brother. Their parents had always chalked it up to them being identical. Perhaps that was true. Who could say for sure? “This is why I try not to pet sit if I can help it. Usually if they’re total angels when their owners are around? They’re nuts when the owner is gone. And I like to not use magic on animals if I can help it. But that dog may just call for a little calming spell.”

“i feel like they get a lot of sick enjoyment out of seeing how panicked they make us, namely me.” she agreed with a light laugh, the got so worked up and then aced her tests, so either her studying paid off, or she over did it. “a nurse, i only have one more semester and then i’ll graduate too, provided i pass everything, of course.” she really hoped she would.

“Okay, see, I can sympathize. I’m a school nurse and studying for that? It drove me just about insane.” It had paid off in the end, Harleen wouldn’t deny that one but the process of getting there had been not only time-consuming but often times terrifying. It would make her question of own memory, her skills and even her intelligence because she had been so worried about messing things up. Sometimes she often got that witch are not she was somewhat humans and that they meant she didn’t have to be absolutely perfect despite what her professors seemed to think. “What do they have you studying right now?”

“More or less,” he replied with a faint sigh. It was definitely more rather than less, and he was sure that his general appearance made that painstakingly obvious. “Espressos, maybe, but straight americanos don’t do much of anything for me.” Which was rather sad since he liked the taste, but he had run that novelty into the ground a long time ago.

“Coffee does seem to do very little for a lot of this town,” Harleen conceded with a slight nod. It was one of the downsides of being supernatural- coffee did so much for humans but so little for them. Even less for the were community than for witches l like herself. “Caffeine pills might do the trick. Enough of them can give you the jitters but the right balance at least gives the system shock people chase when they down coffee.”

“aren’t kids just precious?” his eyes are light with happiness as he watched a few kids go running past the park bench that he is happily perched on, working on grading assignments for his class. “i swear, i’ll never get sick of them. they’re so cute and they’re imaginations will never not amuse me.”

“Not as precious when they’re faking being sick to get out of class- but generally I agree.” Most of the kids she dealt with during her job were great. Sweet, innocent, full of energy and wonder. But sometimes as a school nurse Harleen encountered kids trying their best to pull one over on her and get out of their schoolwork- even at a young age. She had to give them credit for their creativity though. “They sometimes think adults can’t tell when they’re faking being sick- but I guess that’s sort of cute, too.”

“damnit you fucking dog,” cussed the brunette, never one to but able to silence her potty mouth when she was off work. at least she censored herself around her kids. sera managed to grab a top on the way as she rushed out of her apartment, chasing the stupid dog she was watching while her neighbor was away for the weekend. she made it outside as she finished pulling the shirt over her stomach, and spotted the thing peeing on a hydrant, then running back inside the building. “are you kidding me?” she said, really to anyone who was listening, but mostly to herself or the dog. “good morning to me.” it was well past noon, but the witch had a late night and had slept in.

“Late night, Ser?” Standing outside of her sister’s apartment building Harleen wasn’t surprised to see her sister rushing out- chasing a dog, yes, but not running out. Perhaps it was because something in her had told her to go check on Sera that morning. Whether it was the triplet thing or the indenticals thing? She couldn’t be sure. All she knew was that something told her that she had to go over there- not so much because she felt like Sera was in trouble. More just to check and see how she was doing. Holding out a cup of coffee in offering to her sibling the elder of the two took a sip of her own. “Whose dog is that anyway?”

“there is a huge no food sign, but ice cream sounds like a dream right now.” she replied with a small laugh, she had a huge sweet tooth. heather wrinkled her nose a bit, not in irritation or anything, but just as an attempt to study the other and see if she really would be a help, though there really only was one way of finding that out, and that was telling the brunette what she was doing, “studying medications and their overdose levels, i have an exam in a few days.” she said with a shrug, “i’m just paranoid because they said that if we fail the test then we have to retake the whole class.”

“Yeah, well, they like to scare you into studying your ass off. Tests matter but I think they like to make you panic so they can see how well you do under pressure.” Cocking her head to the side Harleen looked over the stuff laid out on the desk, tucking her bottom lip between her teeth in thought. “Studying to be a nurse or to be a doctor?” Neither one was a walk in the park usually- but in theory, studying to be a nurse was easier. Or at least less time consuming.

He was over it. The stifling atmosphere from the show nearly suffocated him, and it certainly didn’t help that he had been running on almost no sleep. Oliver had the manners to stick around to greet the needed connections, old friends, recently established friends- so on and so forth, but he didn’t stick around to have lengthy conversations. No, he slipped out of the gallery, ubered his way out of the neighboring town and tucked himself into one of the lesser well known cafes back at home in East Stroudsburg. Which, might’ve been a foolish choice since his attire was above and beyond a casual Saturday afternoon.

Still, he ordered a large cup of coffee and went about to settle himself at a table in the far back.  In hindsight, his getup probably painted a very odd picture. Half parts fatigued, half partsexpensive. Oliver rummaged around in his pockets to get his phone out. The movement caused something to fall out and roll away. Of course it did. Peeved, he let out a small sigh and looked around to get the attention of someone nearby. “Hi, sorry, could you get that for me?” He put on his best smile, which still looked more pained than joyous, and gestured towards the item on the floor.

“Tough day?” The witch questioned, leaning over to pick up the fallen object from the floor- some sort of business card that Harleen didn’t take the time to look too closely at. It wasn’t really her business, after all. And people were entitled to privacy. So instead she just placed the card on the table in front of him, glancing up at the man briefly. “You look like you could use about a dozen or so of those coffees right about now.”

the red head was huddled up in the library, studying the list of drugs she had a test over the next day. heather loved her chosen study path, she couldn’t wait to be a nurse and help others, but still, she got a bit overwhelmed with how much she had to remember. when she saw footsteps out of the corner of her eye, she looked up with a smile, “listen, unless you’re here to help me cram, or feed me ice cream, i’m going to beg you to sit somewhere else.”

“Pretty sure they frown upon ice cream in a library,” the witch pointed out. “If it melts it will ruin the books. And as for helping you cram? Depends on what you’re studying. I may work for a school, but I’m not a teacher.” Not by a long shot but no need to go into too many details with the redhead just yet. Most people didn’t want to hear personal details about a person they literally just met anyway. “What are you studying?”
