❛ If this had been enough to kill you, you should probably rethink your career path, Ms. Knight. ❜ Reed glanced up from the device long enough to offer some poignant sarcasm. After a moment, he glanced back down at it and offered a small smile. Without much thought, he moved his left hand to the left and it immediately began to stretch across the length of his laboratory room. Once it had grown to nearly twice its normal length, it reached its destination—a wall of tools on the opposite side of the room. With elegant fingers, he pulled a couple of different sized screw drivers and a multitool off of the wall. As his hand returned to its normal length, he returned the glance to her. ❛ If this could kill anything more than a bunny rabbit, I’d be surprised. ❜
He scoffed and his tone reeked of condescension. He’d known a thing or two about death devices in his day and this was no death device, much as the wielder might’ve thought it could be. With one screw driver, he switched a couple of plates around, moved a few cables and plugged them into new homes before replacing the cover and turning it onto its side. WIth his multi-tool, he made a few modifications to the rest of its components and then hoisted it up onto his shoulder. ❛ Now, if this were to go off, it’d be the rough equivalent of a FatMan or LittleBoy. I’m sure you’re familiar with that. ❜
“ What makes you think I don’t all the time?”
It’s not so bad once she gets in the thick of it. It’s all instinct and cop training and kung fu. But when that bullshit wakes her up at 3am, or interrupts her lunch, or a date, or even a nap, she reconsiders her career choice. Does the city really need one more person trying to save it? She couldn’t quit if she tried though.
As she sees him replacing parts instead of taking them off and keeping them off, she knows where he’s going. She knows exactly what he’s going to do (well, not exactly, but overall, she knows.) Her hand pinches the bridge of her nose, and no, she’s not even going to open her eyes to see the finished product. “ Did you really just make the not-death device into an actual death device just to prove a point? I could have just let Tony play with it if I wanted that to happen.”
