it was a goddamn cliche, but it was a cliche because it was TRUE. balancing hero life with regular life was a real pain in the ass. every single time he finished up saving someone, another person was in peril, there was just no end to it. of course, peril could mean very different things, peril could mean disasters of all sorts of scale, but where did you draw the line? help the guy who was being robbed at gun point, but don’t help the high school kid being picked on by bullies? help the guy about to be flattened by a speeding bus but don’t help the drunk idiot wandering in the middle of the road? if matty tried to help everyone, he wouldn’t even have a chance at living his OWN life. and lately, it seemed that there were more bad guys than ever; more murderers, thieves, people playing at being supervillains, you name it.
the one beam of hope in all this doom and gloom was that matty wasn’t alone. it seemed that good was responding in kind, by creating more heroes, and every few weeks he spotted a new costume, a new mask.
speaking of new guys. matty was currently booking it over the tops of apartment buildings, leaping from one to the next as he chased after some asshole in a shoddy costume ( it looked like he had been inspired by ghostbusters, of all things, but he moved surprisingly fast for a marshmallow-esque man ), when he noticed someone else was in pursuit. someone else super, a guy, young-ish looking. matty legged it over a railing and up a fire escape, desperate not to lose sight of the villain, but also trying to get close enough to the other guy to at least shout out some sort of greeting.
in the end, he didn’t have to try. both of them stopped short on the same building, with the villain now nowhere in sight. matty scanned the area around them, then let out a string of curses. ❛ shit, did y’ see where he went? ❜ he turned to the other guy.

there were several things harley hated about what they did. #1 they were a broke college student, trying to balance fighting crime with barely passing classes. it totaled up to maybe two hours of sleep every weeknight if they were lucky. #2 even though there may have been more people fighting the crimes, there were still too many people actually doing the crime, not even including regular people who just happen to walk onto the street with out checking both sides ( seriously, who doesn’t check both sides before walking ?? ) #3 the public backlash was tremendous. the media was completely split on the idea of superheroes ( “ well if there were no heroes then there wouldn’t be anyone causing problems !! ” ) #4 the guilt of not being able to get there in time. it happened more often than they’d like to admit, and they’d rather not think about it at all.
the person harley were after that night had been bothering them for the past few days, leaving menacing notes, and they were NOT going to let him get away this time.
of course, the world seemed to hate them. somehow, harley had lost sight of where he had gone. they looked to their side, and shook their head the slightest. in their frustration, red sparks of electricity sparked over their hand, and they shoved the hand into their pocket. “ fuck, man, i don’t know for sure, but maybe he climbed down ?? ” the stepped to the edge of the roof and looked down, trying to catch a glimpse of the guy. “ i think it’s the best shot we have ”

The silk fabric of her long gown dragged along the marble floor as Lily’s fingers twisted along the golden accents to the wall. She could already hear the violin and various string instruments playing from the large formal dining room. It was meant to be a castle owned by some count willing to represent both parties in this rather arduous discussion of ‘peace.’ Lily didn’t care much for it because in the end none of it had ever affected the littlest Vos.
In her parents mind Lily’s only position was to look pretty and prove that they had the upper hand. If their daughter was littered in jewels and wearing the finest of fabrics than they were the superior kingdom. She was like any other item they had brought with them to the castle. The myriad of servants, the ostentatious amount of fine jewels and metals, and the oversized crowns on their heads. To the King and Queen their little Princess was an object and nothing more. Unlike her elder brothers who she wandered behind into the dining room.
“Late,” her father whispered to them as they walked by him. Each King sat at the end of the table on the side of their respective Kingdoms while their children, wives and other relatives filled the centre. Lily unfortunately had found herself stuck next to one of the members of the opposing side. However inelegant it was she didn’t particularly want to sit next to a stranger who would insist land she didn’t even care about was his - as far as she could imagine the conversation going - and when she sat she focused on not looking at them. Beyond that she tried her hardest not to let this childish reaction of hers show on her face more than the indifference did. Her down turned lips and down turned eyes were her usual face. Why should a girl of her station smile as a commoner did? No…she was a painting, a jewel, an object and these things did not get to feel.

in all honesty, they were bored of these silly meetings. they offered harley no enjoyment, and only made them tired. there was no sense to the talks the two kingdoms had, all they saw were two families arguing over a petty amount of land. so many people in both kingdoms were struggling and THIS is what the rulers decided to spend precious time on ? colossal waste of what could be put to better use.
harley was the sole heir to the throne of the levi’s kingdom. they had an older brother who passed away in a duel that went downhill. now they were constantly pressured by their parents to learn how to lead, after all, they wouldn’t be the princex forever, eventually they’d have to take their parents’ place, and they were not at all ready. the pretended to pay attention to the tense banter between the adults, trying to prove to their parents that they were good enough.
their focus shifted, it was all much too dull for them. harley glanced to their side to whom they assumed was the rival princess. perhaps they should make small talk? she looked rather quiet and uncomfortable. they turned their head to her and reached their hand out for a handshake. “ hello, uh, my name is harley ” they knew that is most certainly not the proper way to introduce themself; their parents had taught them manners, of course.

they’d been on the run for almost two weeks. the outbreak had started on the other side of the country, and it had evidently spread quickly to where they lived. harley’s parents died almost immediately, not being able to take the pressure. their older brother ended up becoming one of the walkers, and harley had no choice but to shoot him, no matter how much it hurt them to do it. they gathered what they could from their house, packing it all into a backpack.
it had been strangely quiet this morning, and so they were desperately on edge, startled by the slighted of sounds. it was no surprise to them that when they walked in to the abandoned building for shelter that they jumped in fright of a stick snapping. they whipped around, point the gun at the source of the sound. it was just a person, but it didn’t make them want to lower their defenses any less.

somehow, harley didn’t know how, but for some reason they had woken up at approximately 3:09 AM in the middle of the forest, completely naked and drenched in sweat. it was odd, to say the least, and extremely cold. on second thought, it may not have been sweat, it felt more slimy than that and had a strange odor. by the grace of god, they didn’t happen to be too far from their home and was able to quickly make it back with out anyone seeing them.
the first thing they did after showering was texting natalia to meet them at the ihop for breakfast. they didn’t reveal anything that happened to them, just simply sent the message, and at 9:00 AM, they sat across from her at the ihop. harley didn’t touch their food, they were too anxious too eat, and instead sipped slowly on orange juice.

this was the only conclusion they could come to, after scouring the depths of the internet for five hours. they got no sleep, instead, they set up a boaard in their room listing the theories on aliens and exactly what could have happened to them.

the car creaked to a stop in front of a rickety house that looked like it would fall from even the slightest breath of wind. harley stepped out of the vehicle, pulled a rather large duffel bag and backpack out with them, and headed inside. immediately, they felt the same strangely chilling air they had felt in their dead brother’s room — like the place was haunted. a grin appeared on their face and they closed the door behind them. not even waiting to properly get settled in, harley pulled out a laptop and a router, and set the latter up. a bit more digging in the bag while the laptop started up and the pulled out pencils and a notebook.
people back home always told them that there was something wrong with them, no one thought about the dead like they did, and no one claimed to SEE the dead like they did. harley’s parents claimed it only got worse after their brother’s death three years before, and perhaps it had. their professor never liked them, and maybe it was because of their papers on ghosts. HA, now harley was going to prove them all wrong. they’d find the most solid evidence on the existence of ghosts right here in this ghost town ( rated the #1 MOST HAUNTED by ghosty-blogs.com )
just then, they heard an ominous creek, and they whipped their head around to look at the stairs — NOTHING. excitement pumped through their veins and they took out a hand made ghost detector machine, flipping the switch to ON.

harley had been living ( definitely not the right term, more like, TRAPPED ) inside the house for almost a century. they had heard the rumors the children spread about the old house up on the hill: “ carter ! don’t go up there, it’s HAUNTED, ” “ jane, i dare you to go ring the doorbell &&. see if anyone answers ” “ the last kid your age that went up there died a terrible death. ” it wasn’t that harley wanted to scare people off, they just felt territorial of the place. they were born and raised in the house, laughed in the house, cried in the house, and died in the house. it was almost as if their very soul was tied to the house, and in a way, they supposed it was; every time they tried to leave the property, something P U L L E D their very being to where they died in their bedroom.
their attachment to the house was so powerful that they could feel the doorknob turning and rushed to the front door as fast as they could. it had been a solid twenty five years, four months, two weeks, and six days since someone moved in. how DARE someone came into their house. IT WASN’T FAIR. the creepy old house on mulligan drive was harley’s and harley’s only, everyone who had tried to move in to the place in the past had been scared away, claiming it was haunted. they had done it enough times that it wasn’t a big deal for them to do it again, it just required effort that they didn’t have. being dead was hard work. they materialized into their human-like form and hid in a way that they wouldn’t be seen when the person walked in.
