Please, please, please, I beg male allies of feminism to always, always force themselves to see gender when it has been raised by a woman as a conversation’s component. Please never tell us that you don’t care about gender or don’t see it especially when it is clearly at the forefront of our minds. If we’ve raised it, that means we’re feeling its effects, and even if you don’t mean to, to say it’s irrelevant is to invalidate what we’re feeling. You’d be continuing a cycle of men speaking over women’s truths. You’re welcome to disagree; just because a woman asserts something does not necessarily mean it is the only plausible truth. However, erasing our feelings on the topic is to erase it as a plausible truth for anyone, and as an ally you are obligated to at least ask us why we feel that way and hear us out. It is not your place to erase any woman’s pain. Please take care not to do so. If you don’t understand, ask us. Even in my greatest moments of frustration, if someone takes the effort to ask to be educated, I’ll explain it to them. Most women will.
