Question for Pagans and Polytheists
How do you conceptualize the gods?
They have real physical bodies and live on this plane of existence
They have real physical bodies but they live on a spiritual/ metaphysical plan
They exist as egregores/ individual collections of energy without physical form
The gods are each specific aspects of one larger overarching spiritual body
The gods represent different aspects of the self/ subconscious
I don't believe in gods but I do believe in animistic spirits
That's not my business/ I haven't thought about it
Two or more of the above options (please explain in the tags!)
Other/ Nuanced (please explain in the tags!)
Lunarism ;

Some white witches: "Eclipses are bad dark energy you must never do anything on an eclipse night it's negative vibes horrible things will happen!"
My ancestors: "A lunar eclipse? Oh you mean the giant sky dog that eats the moon for fun. It'll spit it back out when it gets tired of it. Carry on now."

we don't just have animal guides. what about that band that got you through the worst night of your life? the comic book that showed up in your life exactly when you needed it? the tv show that revealed something about yourself you couldn't see before?
just a thought.
the gods show you the version of themselves that you need most, your experiences won't be identical to other worshippers/devotees out there because you are different from others and that's okay. that just adds to how beautiful the connection to the theoi really is.
☝️ this right here is so important for people to understand!
You may be missing very important magical symbols, lessons, and spirits if you're only looking for things to present themselves in ancient, mystical, or "natural" ways. Sometimes a deities presence is felt in a fast food restaurant, and the universe slips sermons into the song selection of your daily commute.
The world we live in is modern, do not reduce the universe to only the archaic. It aged with us.
some ideas for non-verbal spell casting:
so i’m a pretty quiet person irl, and i find a lot of spellbooks and posts on here include verbalization in the form of incantations, mantras, et cetera.
which is all well and good if that works for you, whatever floats your boat and casts your spell; but what if you’re like me and verbalizations make you uncomfortable?
or you’re practicing late at night while your housemates are asleep?
or you just. prefer to not speak?
well, here are some alternatives!
say your incantation internally
visualize your incantation
make your incantation physical (could you add movement/gestures to your spell?)
make it symbolic (breaking something, binding something, burying it?)
use a noisemaker! (eg. a bell, clap, a song, note, chord, etc)
simply do without! not every spell or ritual needs a verbal component, and maybe you’re just not that kind of practitioner. that’s okay!
i’m sure there are tons of things that i’ve left off or forgotten, and i definitely want to hear more ideas if you have them!
wind be with you!
Hot take but you can’t learn about paganism without also learning about white supremacy and how it uses pagan religions to push hate group agendas all over the world today. If you don’t learn about the connections between the two and how it operates, your ignorance enables white supremacists to keep on doing it and using it to recruit others. People in our community who do nothing and stay silent are literally a part of the problem, there is no opting out whatsoever. Divorcing the two makes the issue repeat itself over and over and over again.
It’s not hard to include this in your research and stay aware. It’s the bare minimum.
shydryad's list of cool offerings and altar items
Here are some ideas for stuff to leave as an offering or put on your altar. Feel free to reblog with ideas of your own!
cool/recycled jars and bottles
animal skulls
teeth
fossils
claws
shells
sea glass
moss
dried/fresh flowers
candles
incense
preserved insects
feathers
pretty-looking stones
raw honey
hard liquor or wine (especially something quality)
cannabis (yes, seriously)
fresh fruit
chocolates
tobacco
tea
sage, palo santo, or preferably an alternative dried aromatic herb(s) to bundle up and burn (try to avoid endangered plants!)
ice cold water (especially spring water/non-tap water)
moon water
fine fabric scraps or silk scraps
fur/pelts
live potted plants (be sure to take good care of it if it’s used for offering/ritual purposes)
a handmade drawing, painting, poem, or other craft
singing a song or playing another musical instrument
anything handmade with care (such as something sewn, or origami)
old or broken jewelry (especially if it had sentimental value to you)
a written letter (fancy stationary and taking your time with your handwriting would show a lot of energy being put forth, but any letter with do)
There's other ways we can honor the gods or interact with them. You can take on parts of who they are and act as them. Like with Tyr being my sense of always fulfilling my promises, going by my word. Odin also helps me to always think of the variety, the endless amounts of learning to be had. Frigg reminds me to be mindful of my finances, Thor helps to remind me how strong I am. Skadi helps me to stand up for myself. Loki helps me to like myself, Hel reminds me that death will always come. Freyr helps me to be thankful for the bounties I receive, Freya guides me in freedom of being, figuring out my own way. Mani helps me to be kind.
So you see, there's many ways we can bring the gods into our lives by this kind of concept. It doesn't have to be this, but it's just one aspect of how we can. No matter what, always be you, always embrace what you feel comfortable doing. The gods are here.
Folkists aren't welcome on my page. Go be racist somewhere else.
