The way Tsubomi is handled is one of my favourite things about Mob Psycho 100. She's Mob's childhood crush and he thinks about her a lot but she's also kind of an absence. I think it really drives home how much 'nobody is the main character' with how little her life involves Mob at all. She has her own friends and her own life, and it's not even an active avoidance, he's just a childhood friend she's no longer close with.

The final episode is so perfect to me, because of course she'd reject him. She's never shown any interest in him and she's moving away, indirectly removing herself from his story. It proves she's not just a love interest orbiting a protagonist, she's a person with her own inner world. But she still sits and waits through the destruction of a city while a tornado heads towards her, because her life may not revolve around Mob but he's still someone she cares about (and she's brave as hell). It's a very touching and realistic depiction of childhood friends you've lost touch with, we have our own lives but I will still be there if you call for me.

Then they chat every now and then in the epilogue which is just sweet, it means they chose to intertwine their lives a little bit again.
