Allie’s smile widened at the mention of finding her own hippogriff to bond with. She never got too attached to things, namely people. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to, she simply didn’t know how. Most of the time, she figured it was easier that way - leading her own life with no other distractions to sway her from anything. Easier, yes, but at the cost of being lonely.
"That would be wonderful. I want to go with you ver much, but please, if I ever become too much of a hindrance, then by all means, tell me so. I don’t wish to be a bother." She said happily, allowing her voice to rise to a somewhat normal volume, and not the quiet cadence she usually favored.
She knew how he felt about people. She knew it all too well. She never could quite abandon the looming anxiety she felt whenever she had to engage in conversation. Of course, this was an odd occurence. She would have taken the time to be shocked that she was managing so well with Harrison, but she was far too interested in what he was saying. At a brief glance, she noticed that almost everyone in the common room had gone. Was it that late already? She hadn’t even noticed the time going by.
"I don’t really do so well around people, myself. They’re very unpredictable. I suppose we’re similar in that aspect. I usually just find myself reading or studying, though - that’s something that’s always predictable. Routine, in a way." She said thoughtfully, finding herself voicing things she always kept to herself. At risk of sounding strange, she trailed off with a sheepish smile.
"An association with death might paint them in a darker light, yes," Allie said more quietly, looking at her hands in her lap. "And I doubt that any being, human or creature, is completely innocent. I sometimes think of them as reflections of our own darknesses, in a way. We cannot see our own faults, our worst evils, not unlike our inability to see the Thestrals." She shook her head slightly. "I suppose that sounds a little silly, I apologize for rambling."
"Trust me," Harrison spoke bluntly, "if I find you to be a bother I won't bother taking you again.
"But, you might not like hippogriffs if you prefer predictable. They're about as far from predictable as you get. You think they'll do one thing and then next moment you'll find they've done the complete opposite. Silverfeather loves to do that when we're flying. I'm looking into designing a saddle so I don't fall off next time she tries to do a flip while I'm on her back. I fell into the lake last time that happened. She snatched me out right quick, though."
The boy opened his mouth to speak once more but quickly closed it, unsure if he should even give way to such details. He didn't want her to see him as creepy, that much was certain. But whenever he wrote in his journal he was noting habits he'd observed not just in animals, but in humans as well, particularly wizards, if school was in session, at least. During the summer he often observed muggle habits, which was a bit more interesting and bothersome. Muggles paid a lot of attention to their surroundings, especially young lads in trees. On more than one occasion he'd been chased out of one for 'bird watching', whatever that meant.
"I've taken to drawing, actually," he admitted instead. "I sketch out scenes in the halls or out on the grounds. People comment on them but I rarely say anything back. It's not their business." He thought briefly of the sketches in his journal, of the people that were in them. Oliver was in a number of them, but that was because he's spent the last twelve years of his life with him as his best mate.
The Ravenclaw closed his eyes, shaking his head. "No, don't apologize. Rambling means you're thinking and that not something we Ravenclaws should look down upon." He pondered her suggestion, finding it to be very thoughtful and very compelling. "Yes," Harrison mused. "I quite like that idea, actually. Perhaps you have the makings of a magizoologist, yet, Allie," he teased lightly, grinning from ear to ear.

"Will you expire if we don’t get promptly to Pomfrey?" Sirius asked distractedly, trying to remember what was in this area. He dragged the boy over to a large goblin statue and prodded its toe with his wand. A door revealed itself behind the statue. Sirius dragged his new compatriot into the little nook and closed the door.
"Here, just lean against that door for a moment, don’t die on me now." Sirius said, helping him lean gingerly against the door. Making sure the Ravenclaw was paying attention, he turned into Padfoot. He barked excitedly, nudging his nose against the other boy’s hand.
Before he could even respond, Harrison was being whisked away to a secret chamber that even he didn't know about. He was propped against the wall where he began to vaguely wonder if he was going to be put through some, at current, rather unwelcome advances.
He was pleasantly surprised to find that he was not being groped by Sirius Black, but that Sirius had only turned into a dog, thus proving the theory he had about the Marauders to be very much correct, at least about this marauder. What baffled him was that a Gryffindor managed to learn this trick.
"Interesting," Harrison mused, patting the dog. "I suppose your friends are also animagi?"

That caught her off guard. He wanted her to help with him? Allie desperately wanted something fun to do with her time, but usually if it involved other people, she felt like a nuisance and that she was bothering them. It was strange… no one ever asked her to do things with them. She had a few girls from her dorm as minor acquaintances that only ever really talked to her when it was about school relating things, but other than that, she spent most of her time alone.
"You - You’d really want me to come? I - I mean to say, I would really like that, it sounds really educational. Not to mention fun. I wouldn’t want to intrude on your private time, though, I’m sure you don’t like to be disturbed while you’re tending to them." Allie managed, stammering at some points in an attempt to convey her answer properly. "I mean, yes. I would love that. I’m aware of the basic etiquette for dealing with the Hippogriffs, so I promise I wouldn’t do anything rash or out of turn to upset them."
She smiled warmly, her eyes lighting up. A real smile. She hardly ever had use for the expression. Mostly, she looked bored or in deep concentration. That is, whenever she pulled her nose from the middle of a book.
"I can’t believe you’ve ridden her, that sounds really frightening. You weren’t even a little scared?"
Bravery was not a trait that Allie possessed. She wasn’t a coward, and the only times when she was skittish happened when she was talking to people and she couldn’t work around her lack of social skills.
She flushed at the ‘shy and quiet’ remark, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger and allowing it to unravel as she spoke.
"I’ve… I’ve been able to see the Thestrals since we were allowed to ride the carriages after first year. My dad died when I was six." She explained, matter-of-fact and with no sadness. "I’ve never really taken the time to interact with them for more than a few minutes, but they’re very … sweet. I don’t know if I’m describing it properly. And I’m curious, too. To think that something so beautiful… something so innocent could spawn from seeing tragedy. It’s quite sad."
Allie's response led to an amused lifting of the corners of his mouth, a smile forming slowly but surely. He didn't know how he felt about having company when he tended to his creatures. In the past, he'd found it only to be a nuisance but that was because Oliver was completely hopeless around hippogriffs and he spent more time babying him than he did with the creatures. For a reason unbeknownst to him, Harrison didn't feel like Allie would be so cumbersome. He hoped he was right.
"I'll admit that I haven't had a companion in the hippogriff pens but as long as I don't have to worry about you doing something foolish, I don't see the problem. Maybe you'll bond with you own hippogriff and get to ride on your own one day!"
As the conversation had gone on, the number in the common room dwindled until it was just the pair of them, the hour growing late but Harrison was hardly aware, he was too engrossed in the conversation to care. Even the ache in his body seemed to fade as he was pulled into the allure of the woman before him.
"I...I suppose if I was scared I didn't think of it. It's not something I consider when I'm around creatures. I'm more nervous around people than I am around them. Inevitably I say something offensive or creepy and I return to my solitude, which would be either my journal or out of doors." He shrugged, not really giving much else of an explanation.
He frowned slightly as she spoke of her father, almost giving condolences before he stopped himself, deciding she didn't sound like she needed that support. "Perhaps they aren't innocent," he mused slowly. "I agree they are gentle creatures but to be associated with death they cannot be entirely innocent, can they?"

"Not exactly," Sirius chuckled side eyeing the Ravenclaw attached to him. "Can you keep a secret?" he asked.
Could he keep a secret? Harrison had spent hundreds of hours hiding in some nook or cranny of the castle, observing wizards in their natural habitat and had discovered quite the many things about them. He'd meandered guesses to many things, including the Marauder nicknames.
But, that wasn't something he'd admit to. It wasn't his story to tell. "Yeah," he replied. "I don't really have anyone to tell, anyway."

Sirius stopped dead. “Your father is Newt Scamander?” he asked, staring, “That’s, holy Batman, that’s wicked! So he brings loads of cool animals home?” he continued, remembering their goal and dragging the other boy probably far too quickly. “I’ve, um, sort of got a dog here at the castle. In a matter of speaking.”
The Ravenclaw would have shrugged if he didn't have one arm slung over Sirius' shoulders. "Sometimes. If he brings them home, it's usually so I can help him." He grunted as their speed increased, his sore legs protesting greatly. "'In a matter of speaking'?" he repeated, "What, you've got a dog up in the Gryffindor common room? Filch'll love that."

"That’s very true. And what is life without a little danger?" She replied with a smile. "I do envy you, though. I wish I had the courage to do those sorts of things. I suppose I’m the type to watch from afar and study about it in a book. I could do with a little more adventure - that seems like it would be an amazing way to lead one’s life."
Allie couldn’t help but feel happy about the way he talked. He clearly had a lot of passion for creatures, and it was nice to see someone speak so intently about things they enjoyed. He also seemed a great deal more mature than some of their peers, something Allie found difficult to find, even though they were in a house that specifically catered to those with desires for knowledge. Her shyness did hinder her from approaching people, but she wasn’t completely socially crippled. She did enjoy the company of few, but it was much easier to relate to Harrison. Not in the sense that she wanted to do exactly what he did, but that he harbored a great deal of passion for what he wanted.
"Kettleburn may have met his match." She chuckled. "I agree, Hippogriffs are quite beautiful creatures," Allie said thoughtfully, tugging at a tendril of her hair - a nervous habit she could never seem to kick. "I find Thestrals to be quite captivating, myself. They’re so gentle… kind, almost, if a creature can be kind."
Courage. Was it about courage? Did courage make him want to spend the entire day at the side of a winged animal or was it cowardice? Harrison was hardly any good as socializing unless it was about something he was passionate about, which, thankfully, most of this conversation fit that criteria. He had a more difficult time relating to people when they spoke of other interests, like Oliver and his science-y stuff.
"Do you want to help some time?" he asked suddenly, leaning forward in his seat. "I could teach you more than what you could ever learn from a book. Plus, proper bonding with a hippogriff can lead to some amazing events. Silverfeather lets me ride her from time to time. Not while she has her egg to protect but after it hatches I'll probably go for a ride. If you wanted to do that I'm sure she wouldn't mind. Silvey is a big softy at heart."
The corner of his lip quirked up slightly. He often found that animals had a wider range of emotion than humans, they just showed it differently. "I've only recently begun to work with Thestrals. My grandmother passed away a few summers back and my father had taken me to visit her with the intention of letting me see and work with the beasts," his mind wandered a bit, straying from the topic entirely for a few brief seconds before he cleared his throat and brought his focus back to the present conversation. "All creatures have personalities and emotions. Some can be kind and other rough, some bold and loud, others..." he paused, glancing at Allie, "shy and quite. With Thestrals, it was their timidness that fascinated me. Even still I am curious as to what makes them invisible to those who haven't witnessed tragedy."

"That does seem like an interesting field to go into." She replied, nodding. "Though, it does appear to be a little dangerous at points."
She gestured to his battered skin with a slightly shaking, uneven hand. Noticing this, she pulled it away quickly and clamped her hands together in her lap. She scanned over him quickly, noticing the change in posture. He truly looked exhausted. A small frown appeared on her mouth, feeling like a nuisance and that she was keeping him from sleep She tore her eyes away, not wanting to appear rude or strange for looking at him
"Are you and Kettleburn fairly close? He doesn’t really take a liking to many people, at least, not enough to allow them extra time around the creatures." She giggled to herself before adding, "Though, if I had to venture a guess, I’d say he prefers the company of animals to people. He wouldn’t even let me go in after class to get a more detailed drawing of my Bowtruckle."
He smirked, conceding to her point that it was a little dangerous. "Everything is a little dangerous from one perspective to another but that doesn't make the activity any less noble."
Harrison couldn't help but chuckle at her remark. No, Kettleburn didn't take to people easily. Neither did he, honestly. The only friend he had in his six and a half years at Hogwarts was Oliver, he'd hardly bothered with anyone else. Simply from observing them he very easily gauged that he didn't want them as his friend, anyway. Perhaps that was why they got on so well now. Of course, his initial connection paved the way for his little internship in the first place.
"We are now, yeah. I talk to him about almost everything. But it wasn't always that way. After I took Care of Magical Creatures for the first time, I realized how much I loved it and talked to Kettleburn about helping. He was very insistent that he didn't need aid but I was desperate. So I sent an owl to my dad asking for help." He paused, thinking of his father for several moments. "My father is also a magizoologist and had worked with Kettleburn before. He saved him from losing an eye, actually. Anyway, he pulled in a few favors until Kettleburn agreed to letting me help once a week. Now I'm sort of down there all the time.
"I spend most my time with the hippogriffs, they're by far my favorite, even after a stunt like today." He smiled, looking down at himself, finding that his returning positive attitude toward his creatures eased his pain just slightly. His gaze lifted to Allie, thankful for his time with her as it meant he wasn't going to bed resentful.

"You have kneazeles? That’s fantastic!" Sirius said enviously, putting an arm round the other boy and placing a hand on his waist, taking much of his body weight. "Almost as good as having a dog." he added, chuckling to himself as he helped the Ravenclaw down the corridor.
Of all the animals Harrison had had--which was a fair few, to put it plainly--he'd never had a dog. He'd wanted one but his father was insistent that it would only be killed by the kneazeles. "I've always wanted one," he admitted as he let Sirius practically drag him down the halls. "My father, Newt Scamander, you might know the name, was always more keen on exotic wizarding animals, not plain ones. Quite a shame, actually."
Stuck at the Door || allie-the-claw
"That’s a relief, I’m really glad you weren’t badly hurt." She replied, her eyebrows knit together and a slight frown tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Hippogriffs can be pretty dangerous when they feel as if they’re being disrespected, but you were right to tend to Silverfeather. It was very good of you to help out with them, that’s very admirable. I don’t think I’d be able to do it without somehow upsetting the creatures. I do like them, though. They’re very kind and gentle, normally - at least when I was working with them in class. Though, Kettleburn was a bit careless in the situation - it shouldn’t have come to you being injured."
Allie looked to the ground as he asked her name, feeling slightly foolish that she hadn’t given it to him in the first place. That probably would have been wise, but she was too preoccupied to even think about that.
"Oh, I’m Alexandria Martin." She said, her voice quiet. "But, I suppose I prefer Allie - Alexandria is a bit too elegent sounding - much too proper." She gave a nervous chuckle. "Don’t apologize, I should have gave you my name earlier, silly of me… B-but, at any r-rate, it’s nice to meet you. Formally, at least, I have seen you around before."
Allie had seen him before, but she’d never tried to strike up a conversation with him. That was true of everyone, though. She kept to herself unless approached. She supposed she had to overcome her shyness at some point. She often felt like it held her back, and in truth, it did. It did please her that she was managing to keep up the conversation. What pleased her more was that she was actually interested in what he had to say.
Harrison shrugged, her compliments rolling right off him. He didn't give a hoot if it was admirable, he did it because he loved it. And because he had nagged Kettleburn enough times for the professor to allow him to help as well has proven his own capabilities. Harrison had grown up around animals, considering his father's line of work. "Thanks, I suppose," he eventually replied. "It's not something I really think about. I'm going into magizoology after Hogwarts and I need to get my start somewhere that doesn't involve my father's influence. Where better than here?"
He leaned forward, his back having protested it's prolonged recline and turned his gaze on Allie, noting her small mannerisms, how her gaze went to the ground, the sudden drop in her vocal volume, and her nervous laugh, his observational habits kicking into gear, working out if she was shy, nervous, or scared, perhaps all three. But he was fairly certain she wasn't frightened.
He made a face, waving his hand. "It was a slip up on both our parts," he admitted, "But, I do agree, Alexandria is very formal. Allie is--" he cleared his throat, "Allie is much more suiting, I think."

Allie spotted her favorite armchair and made a beeline for it, sinking into the cushions, sighing, and resting her pounding head against the back of it. She pushed her bookbag to the side, thinking she’d just finish up her studying the next day. She was much too tired to look at the miniscule, cramped text any longer.
She listened intently as he explained the situation, a slight look of alarm flashing on her face.
"It… attacked you?" Allie asked slowly, her eyes widened with shock. "Completely unprovoked? Have you - Have you gone to the Hospital Wing or anything for those injuries? Are you alright? You didn’t get seriously hurt, did you?"
Allie was blabbering, painfully aware that she was doing so, but unable to form a proper response. Care of Magical Creatures wasn’t necessarily her favorite class, but since studying the Hippogriffs, not one had acted out of turn or attacked a student, much less to the degree that Harrison was attacked.
Harrison's face twisted slightly in thought as he debated how to answer that. It wasn't entirely unprovoked. Hippogriffs were very proud creatures and didn't take kindly to being ignored, especially the swatting-away-with-the-hand kind of ignored. "No, not unprovoked. It was my fault, really. Roughbeak wanted my attention and I sort of absentmindedly swatted him away while I was tending to Silverfeather, she's waiting for an egg to hatch and we have to be very careful with expectant mothers. Often, they don't eat because they're too busy guarding the egg. Consequently, they get into fights more often to protect the egg.
"Anyway, I was tending to her when Roughbeak snatched me by the arm and had a bit of fun. Silverfeather intervened pretty quick, but it was enough to bang me up pretty bad," he explained. He certainly felt stiff but Harrison was very aware that it could have been much worse. His father had told him of stories of his childhood with a mother that worked as a hippogriff breeder, a line of work that Harrison was certainly interested in.
"Really, though, it's nothing to worry about--" he stopped, intending to say her name but realizing he hadn't even asked it. That was typical behavior for him, to be so rude, but he was surprised he didn't know it. His observational habits typically meant he knew everyone at least by name. "Er, I'm sorry, I never did introduce myself? I'm Harrison, Harrison Scamander."
Stuck at the Door || notactuallyblack
"Shit, why don’t you let me give you a hand?" Sirius offered, reaching out, but stopping before he actually touched the boy, waiting for permission. "Run into the wrong person on your way down, it might end badly for you." he continued, wondering about his blood status. Most purebloods wouldn’t have picked up the Star Trek references, and with some of the bastards walking around the school, better safe than sorry.
His initial response was to jerk away but, the ache in his bones protested and he eventually nodded, leaning into his support and not because of his blood status. Harrison's father, Newton Scamander, was well known in the wizarding community for authoring Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its subsequent volumes. His mother also game from a long line of wizards and witches.
"I can't imagine a person who would want to harm me," Harrison laughed, immediately regretting it. "If they did, I can personally assure them that there would be three kneazles very keen on shredding them to pieces." He spoke of his family pets, Hoppy, Mauler, and Milly.
