He started growing his hair out at first to piss off his parents, but then he learned how much he loves having a mane of wavy hair. By the time they graduated, it was past his shoulders. 

A lot of things he loves he started doing to piss off his parents. This also includes his fascination with Muggle punk and queer culture.

He and Lily bond over their mutual love for the Rocky Horror Show. They dress up and go to shadowcasts whenever they get the chance, and drag the other Marauders with them. 

When they aren’t on missions, he and Lily frequent Muggle London, and try to protect as many Muggles as they can from blitz Death Eater attacks

Two abusive parents have left him with a desperate need to be loved. As a result, he is a ridiculous show off, and tries to impress everyone he meets.

Lily and Sirius headcanons?

Lily is one of the key reasons that Sirius’s beliefs don’t match his families. His whole life he used to ask ‘why are they so bad?” but no one would ever give him a straight answer until he met Lily and he figured it out for himself. They weren’t. Lily was smart, kind, intelligent, crazy talented and most certainly someone to be admired and it made no sense how his family could hate someone based on blood after meeting her.

They got partnered in charms together in first year because James and Sirius kept mucking about so Flitwick separated them. Sirius spent the entire class quizzing her about Muggle life, and she in turn quizzed him about Wizard life. It was the start of an acquaintance ship, but it wasn’t for another several years that they got to be super close.

In around fifth year Sirius developed the nickname ‘little ginge’ and it’s what he called her ever since. Sometimes he would call her Evans or Lils/Lily but not so often.

Lily hated his arrogance, and she hated how he could be cruel - particularly with Snape - and he hated how she was (in his mind) naive enough to believe that a friendship with Snape could ever end in anything but pain. Whenever Lily and Snape fought, Sirius would be the one comforting Lily while James ended up detention for hexing him.

Lily and Sirius would mock flirt constantly - even when Jily was dating/married. Like sometimes she would fix his tie and he would joke that if she wanted to feel him up all she had to do was ask. He would ruffle her hair, sling an arm over her shoulder and could be quite affectionate with her though they were never more than platonic friends.

When Lily found out Sirius had left his family, the first thing she did was throw her arms around Sirius and hug him. He tensed at first, but once his mind remembered that this was Lily, his compassionate friend who wasn’t pitying him or mocking him, he hugged her back. It kind of helped him remember that he had friends who cared about him; that blood isn’t the be all end all and just because his blood family so easily discarded him doesn’t mean he was worthless.

Lily used to joke that when she started dating/married James she was also dating/married to Sirius so he used to send her joking flirty notes and even got down on one knee and proposed to her once.

It was Lily who first called Sirius ‘snuffles’ because she used to joke that Sirius was like a vacuum cleaner - in human form and as padfoot. He sees food and eats food.

While Lily couldn’t fully relate, she could empathise to an extent because she knows what it feels like to be different from your family and be ostracised - especially by siblings - because of it.

Sirius really respects Lily as a witch, and even as an immature 5th year he knew that she was not someone to piss off because she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself, or others or call people out on their bullshit behaviour. Lily admired his strength, courage and loyalty.

As a child, Sirius was taught to keep his emotions in check. Temper tantrums were not tolerated in the Black household, and affection discouraged as messy and immature. 

As he got older, that control contributed to his cool, confident, bad boy demeanor. He was certainly expressive, and spoke blatantly, but it was rare to see an outburst of emotion from the Gryffindor. The occasions when he did lose control, it was usually out of anger. 

But every now and then, James would say something particularly witty, or Peter do something silly, or Remus would say something kind, and Sirius would just smile  

And damn if that boy’s smile wasn’t the most beautiful thing you’d ever seen

sirius black is so easy to love when you first meet him when you’re just seeing the joyous bright brilliant boy with his mischief and his pranks and his marauding, he’s all charm and smooth wit and he loves so much and so deeply and once he loves you he will do anything for you, he would without hesitation die for anything and anyone he loves. he loves hard and fierce and he doesn’t know how to stop himself. he thrives on attention and laughter and he’s very good at coaxing both of those things out of people so sirius is very easy to like at first glance.

but the ugly side to sirius is that he hates just as intensely as he loves and there’s nothing beautiful about it. he can be merciless and sharp and needlessly cruel, and he doesn’t always need a good reason. he’s easily bored and not particularly bothered by tormenting people for his own amusement. he thrives on attention. he gets swallowed by darkness and restlessness and he doesn’t know how to hide it, doesn’t know or try to avoid making everyone else feel the same way. he’s reckless, and immature, and he can’t — doesn’t want to — control himself.

sirius can be awful and it takes a while to understand that, the duality of intense affection and intense cruelty within him, but once you do he’s hard to love. it’s hard to love somebody like that. but his great redeeming quality is the flipside to the worst parts of him: as consumed as he can be by hatred, he’s affected equally by love. he’s brave and determined and he will do anything for people he loves.

sirius doesn’t know how to exist in shades of grey so maybe he’s hard to love but ultimately loving him is worth it because as awful as he can be, he can be just as good. and i think, more often than not, he wants to be good.

He didn’t need to study Divination to know what happens next. By morning, his state of the art broomstick will be broken in half, his portraits burnt, his uncharmed belongings cursed and thrown away. His name will be forbidden to say, his room forbidden to enter, and his face will be blasted off the family tree. By morning, the oldest son of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black will not have ever existed.

Sirius threw his bag on the bus seat, pulled his cloak over his head to hide from the blinding starlight, and quietly laughed himself to sleep.
