I fucking hate the romanticization of mental illnesses, and I’m not talking about people who self-diagnose. I understand the reasons why people self-diagnose and I support that. People who self-diagnose are people who want to get better but don’t have access to a professional.
I’m talking about people who aren’t mentally ill, who watch 13 Reasons Why, or read a John Green book, and they think it’s so romantic, a pretty girl whose life has no meaning until a boy sees how special she is, and they think, “I want to be like that pretty girl”. A boy kissing you when you’re crying looks pretty in movies, but in real life, panic attacks aren’t pretty, neither is puking or self-harm, people ditch you as friends if you have a mental illness. People who think that are almost always people who have never been through anything hard in their entire lives, they call themselves “damaged”, while simultaneously ostracizing people who are actually damaged. People who are mentally ill don’t want to be, while people who aren’t think that it’s beautiful, it’s so insulting to pretend that you’re mentally ill when you’re not.
