Dunkirk (2017)
You wouldn’t expect a song that opens with the lyric “played with myself, where were you?” to evolve into a rumination on loss and maturity, but underestimation is the underlying theme of Harry Styles’s solo self-titled debut. As the lead of One Direction, he wasn’t supposed to have the foundation to make singer-songwriter quality work. But this song, an acoustic meditation on the internal war of missing someone you also accept you can’t get back, sounds like the best tortured Jack Johnson or Ryan Adams ballads. Another happy surprise: Styles, when given the microphone all to himself, has a damn fine falsetto.

GREIN ON GRAMMYS, FIRST TAKES: RECORD & SONG OF THE YEAR
In the third and final presentation of our Grammy Whisperer Paul Grein’s early ruminations about the Big Four categories’ potential 2018 nominees, he covers both Record and Song of the Year. While Harry Styles might not get an Album nod, and will presumably be nixed for Best New Artist due to the superstardom he reached as part of a group, his “Sign of the Times” seems to be a shoe-in for Song and/or Record honors. SONG OF THE YEAR Harry Styles will likely be nominated for “Sign of the Times.” His co-writers include Jeff Bhasker, who received three consecutive noms in this category from 2011-13 for co-writing Kanye West’s “All of the Lights,” fun.’s “We Are Young” and P!nk’s “Just Give Me a Reason.” RECORD OF THE YEAR Harry Styles is also a sure thing for “Sign of the Times,” one of the year’s best singles and a major step forward for this young star. Grammy trivia: This will be the first time that a single from the first solo album by an artist who rose to fame in a group or duo has been nominated since Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” 12 years ago.
#20 - Harry Styles, ‘Harry Styles’
Harry Styles has proven himself a force to be reckoned with out of all the One Direction members, using classic rock influences to drive the sound on his self-titled album. It was a risk that paid off, even if it meant becoming a meme while filming your debut solo video. From the earnest “Two Ghosts” to the giddiness of “Kiwi,” Styles proved he can diversify his sound enough to satisfy fans young and old. – FUSE

WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATES
Was it a risk to cast someone so well known, and yet such an unknown quantity? ‘It didn’t feel risky at all,’ says Emma, 'because he auditioned the same way everyone else did. Over the course of days of coming back to audition, giving it his best, Harry was absolutely right for the part, and it didn’t feel any more a risk casting him than it did casting anyone else.’ Emma appreciates that his fame might get in the way for some: 'there’s always the risk that people can’t get past the persona, but the truth is he’s a great actor. I think when you watch him in the movie he utterly sucks you in. He’s not Harry Styles any more, in the same way that Fionn isn’t Fionn Whitehead any more - he’s Tommy.’
