Palazzo Barberini - stair by architect Francesco Borromini, Rome, Italy (by Nespyxel)
{Commune Design has a distinct aesthetic that’s a little rough-around-the-edges mixed with some serious style: concrete floors, deep green ceramic tiled walls, black and white murals, and an overall honesty in the feel of materials…}
Jeff Cerciello and Kira Cunningham have established their second Farmshop restaurant up the coast in Marin County, California, offering a full-flavoured experience with style and finesse. The duo have once again collaborated with Commune to create new digs that manage to feel sleek, modern, with a warm atmosphere. Commune is well known for their sophisticated and laid-back Californian vibe in residential and commercial spaces.
The open hearth and kitchen face a broad, L-shaped room, with a wood-fire oven and hearth grill. The room-length dining bar dominates the scene. Custom light fixtures strung on chains by lighting designer Robert Lewis and lounge furniture by Michael Boyd and Trip Carpenter add real character to the interior. Below, the unclothed dark timber tables and painted concrete reflect light from the expansive, panelled windows. A lounge at the back doubles as a private dining room.
Farmshop’s walls are as varied as it’s menu – in some areas covered in gleaming emerald Heath Ceramics tiles; painted in neutral, rich natural tones; or filled by an arresting photographic mural by Pirkle Jones, the different treatments come together to bring texture and depth to this unique space.
