The columbus lighthouse was inaugurated in 1992, in time to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas, it is a museum containing artifacts and pieces of native American history as well as of other countries. At night, it projects beams of light in form of a cross, so bright that they can be seen from Puerto Rico. Habichuela Con Dulce es un plato que nunca falta en el hogar Dominicano durante la Semana Santa. Como un plato exclusivamente nuestro, es algo que nos hace DOMINICANOS, HASTA LA TAMBORA!

The history of the so loved Dominican plate Habichuela con Dulce (Sweet Cream of Beans ) has very mysterious origins. Not much is known about where it came from, how it started, and why is it so widely consumed during Semana Santa (holy week).
The most approximate account of the history comes from Dorvo Soulastre, a member of the French Military who came to the Island during the french migration to the western parts of the Island during the Slave revolts in what is now the Haitian part of the Island (The end of the 18th century). Here he met monsieur Francois Delalande, an owner of a vegetable farm , who had emigrated first to Monte Cristi, and later further on west reaching Santo Domingo, where he attained a piece of land to continue his work in.
Our friend Soulastre had tried some sweetened beans in Delanlande’s farm that he said brought him back memories of how they were consumed in France. He was also offered some dairy products and sweets produced in the area. From here, we identify the three main ingredients in our delicious Habichuela con dulce: beans, milk, and sugar! The ingredients, although, might have officially merged and become a traditional part of the Dominican kitchen after independence was reached in 1844.
As to why it is consumed during Holy week, it might be because Soulastre came across this and wrote about it around the time of Holy week during that year, and it is a way to commemorate.
This exclusively Dominican dish is a nationwide tradition during Holy Week, and it is a tradition that Dominicans bring with them wherever they go. Whether it be Spain, South America, or the streets of Uptown Manhattan!
Habichuela Con Dulce, a tradition that makes us DOMINICANOS, HASTA LA TAMBORA!
