John Fahey / Robbie Basho -Â Reed College, Portland, Oregon, April 8, 1967
A newly surfaced soundboard of two Takoma School giants sharing a bill at Reed College in 1967? Yes, please. Fahey and Basho are often mentioned in the same breath, of course — but listening to them side-by-side here, you’ll be struck by how very different they really were. To put it very simply, Basho always spirals upwards toward the sun and stars, while Fahey descends deep into the underground. Something like that, anyway. A very cool listen, indeed — thanks a million to the uploader and taper.Â
Some details: In late 2019, fellow Neil Young fan and Reed College alumnus, Jim B contacted me. He said that Reed College alum Steve Halpern had a group of late 60’s/early 70’s Reed College recordings of Reverend Gary Davis, John Lee Hooker, John Fahey & Robbie Basho that needed transferring. In 1985, Steve found the recordings among a cache of reels in a Reed College library backroom while researching poet Lew Welch. It appeared that most of the reels were of official college business - board meetings etc, but others were student run campus events including lectures and music. He borrowed a few of the music related reels and transferred them using a reel to reel player from the library’s AV dept, to a radio shack “y” cable plugged the reel to reel’s RCA jacks into one of those ubiquitous, small, portable Panasonic cassette player/recorders. He doesn’t know if the originals were mono or stereo. The library was remodeled in 2008. As Steve was later told, most of the miscellaneous contents of the library was stored in bins in another building while the remodeling occurred. Steve thinks the reels, many of which had no labels, may have been discarded afterwords.
Kneeling in Piss- MUSIC FOR PEASANTS (ANYWAY RECORDS)
The band name might have you thinking ….well, I dunno, lots of different things…..I was thinking heavy noise, but this is far from that (think of some of the loopier stuff coming out of Australia these days and you’ll be close). The band, mainly the work of leader Alex Mussawir, released two EPs earlier this year (The Mob and Tour de Force) and here is EP #’s (this will be released on vinyl on Anyway in 2021) and the band has certainly grown, and spread its wings a bit. The first song, the low-key title track gives you a nice little wallop but really it gets you ready for quirky, guitar-driven “Pervert Today” (“Gotta keep my dress shoes on!”). Next up is the fantastic, keyboard-blipped “Sofia, Baby Please” which is a love letter written in crayon and blood. The final song, “I Love the Avant Garde’ , which humps through via a busted piano, reminded me of some of the quirkier Butterglory cuts and has some serious off-kilter charm to it. So there you have it, four songs and all of them are worth your precious so if you’ve already waited on listening to them then wait no longer. Run, don’t walk to get your grubby mitts on this. They could go in a million different directions next time out and I wanna be there for it.   www.kneelinginpiss.bandcamp.com Â
Still Single / Heathen Disco 2020 End of Year Recap
I guess I’m back! I started gingerly dipping back over into Tumblr to publish some reviews as a means of cutting through all the bondage photos and anime screencaps and people still living on Tumblrs (shout out to anyone still Tumblin’, it’s alright). I also redoubled my efforts to do great radio shows, and that seems to bother some of you enough to unsubscribe, but I’m feeling great about all that. If you wanna hear those shows, you can go to Mixcloud and listen to your hearts’ content. Those 5-6 reviews on here actually turned up worthwhile music in my PO box, so thanks to those who submitted.
This was gonna be the year I reintroduced myself to the world. Don’t make plans like that. Things are a lot better now than I thought they’d be, and the time I burnt up on movies and self-reflection this year was probably more needed than another DJ gig or whatever. Radio sustained me, I will freely admit, and finding records out in the wild once shops reopened was really killer too.
Anyway, time for a year-end recap, right?

The Bats — Foothills (Flying Nun)
Foothills by The Bats
The Bats are nearly synonymous with a kind of laid back, jangly indie rock, never in much of a hurry or a snit, a bit melancholy, but mostly just an oasis of calm and guitar-framed beauty. They’ve been at it for nearly four decades now, and not much has changed since The Deep Set in 2017 or Free All the Monsters in 2011 or The Guilty Office in 2008. (They have gotten a bit mellower since the very beginning, circa Daddy’s Highway and The Law of Things.) If you’re looking for an album that will rock your foundations or change the way you think about music, you’ll have to keep searching. But if you’ll settle for a nearly ideal distillation of two generations of lo-fi pop, well, here’s Foothills. It is about as Bats as a Bats record can be, and that’s a good thing.

Chronophage — Th’Pig’Kiss’d (Cleta Patra)
The Pig Kiss’d by Chronophage
Chronophage’s songs are a tangled snarl of complications, composed in good part composed of agitated jitter-splattering guitars and antic drums, but also touched with the lyrical in vocal parts that unfold with a cerebral sort of ease. The slash and twitch and onslaught of their songs might put you in mind of the Fall, the Swell Maps, Fire Engines or, more recently, Protomartyr, but the nervy, baroque singing calls more ornate post-punkers to mind, Microdisney and the Monochrome Set, for example. They are easy to enjoy but hard to get a handle on, partly because their sound varies so much when the singers switch off; in this second full length, two singers switch off on vocals, the guitarist Parker Allen and the bass player Sarah Beames, and the band sounds very different depending on who’s in front.

The Bats- FOOTHILLS (FLYING NUN RECORDS)
There’s very few things you can count on for consistency in this world, a few are Mike Trout’s stats each baseball season, the goodness of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, the quality of a Seinfeld episode and that New Zealand’s Bats are going to release a terrific record every few years. Well, here we are four years after their last one (2016’s The Deep Set) and they’re back with another set of jangly, melodic pop tunes that are consistently wonderful. Vocalist Bob Scott along with other guitarist Kaye Woodward and the rhythm section of bassist Paul Kean and drummer Malcolm Grant have been at it since 1982 and despite taking a few extended breaks (side projects, families, etc.) have never wavered. A few of the highlights on Foothills include the nimble “Warwick,” while “Another Door” is a bit more melancholy and slightly haunting but a beautiful song nonetheless and the gorgeous “Red Car” is another classic Bats tune. Elsewhere “Field of Vision’ picks up the pace a bit and keep listening until the end or you’ll miss the brilliant “Electric Sea View” which is a perfect way to end a record. Is this my favorite Bats record? No it’s not but it’s damn good and I’m proud to have it in my collection and the band should be damn proud for keeping this lovely thing going for so long.   www.flyingnun.co.nz   www.thebats.bandcamp.com

Guys watch out this ambient album is meant to simulate the experience of being at an airport, do not listen to it unless you are mentally prepared to be at an airport!!!
