she hadn’t expected her escape to go as smoothly as she had hoped, not after the gravity of what had just been said. shoulders tense as she stops mid-step to heed his words, palms curling into nervous balls that clenched at her blush-colored apron. she gives the impression of being frozen in place before she regains control of her senses and turns towards him, albeit at a glacial pace.
doe-eyed expression is at it’s widest, lips parting and closing as if she was urging herself to speak but the words she meant to say escaped her. she settles on staring at him a moment longer before her mouth arranges itself from a solemn pout to a playful smile.
❛ in the middle of the night ? ❜ she throws his words from earlier back at him, soft giggle lighting a glimmer of mischief upon her amber eyes. however, the relief that comes from this interaction is painted all over her face. she’s not only glad he doesn’t push her away, but that she could still act like herself around him even after such a pained confession. their bond was stronger, she thought, than any uncomfortable moment produced by their teenage anxieties.

It reminds him briefly of the old days, back when he’d have people over for the sake of their company; nowadays, he had few guests apart from ANBU related matters.
