Alderamin LN Appreciation Post
It’s been 1-2 weeks since I last completed binge-reading through all 14 LN volumes and it’s one of my fave LN series so far. Usually I tend to get tired after reading 10+ volumes straight and need a small break in between before I continue (e.g. for Seirei Gensouki, Realist Hero, Saikyou Mahoushi no Inton Keikaku) but for Alderamin, it was a non-stop journey.
I did not really like the anime artstyle + the fact that anime had more Ikta & Yatori focus (for practical reasons) compared to LN, so I shall not comment too much on it. Manga artstyle was okay but it was dropped after a few arcs so I shall not comment further.
Many crazy things happen, like more genre-switching mid-story (haha, looking at you Realist Hero), some main MC downtime (just like SAO Kirito fashion),Yatori’s death in Vol 7 (I forgot the spoilers I read a long time ago and was genuinely hoping it wasn’t true, since Torway spared the Igsem general), good girl Haro having a hidden side (maybe cliche to others but I did not see it coming), truth of the Sprites of Alderamin and finally MC death in last volume (ugh, I’m crying tears and thinking of making my own alternate ending where he *somehow* survives, even if hidden in Chamille’s harem).
Author makes even the “bad guys” like Safida and Trisnai relatable and some have mini-redemption arcs or background in how they became this way. So of course I had to be emo during those parts.
Not going to write a long review anymore since now I’ve been starting other LNs (thinking of checking out author’s new work - Reign of the Seven Spellblades) and re-reading Dull Prince WN till latest English translated chapters.
Singer Intro: Sano Ibuki
Chanced upon a pretty good Jpop singer-songwriter today, entirely by chance. I’m glad that I gave the (relatively) new released song [pinky swear] a listen, as I now have many new songs and a new singer to follow :D
I very rarely discover Jpop singers outside of anime op/ed/ost etc, so this is one of the few times and I felt that I just had to make a post on this!
When I first heard the song [pinky swear], I thought it was sung by BUMP OF CHICKEN at first, as the vocals gave off a similar vibe. But nope, it’s by Sano Ibuki. Went to watch the MV afterwards and the styling of the singer in the MV looked similar to what Kenshi Yonezu does for some of his MVs.. 5 days after release, the MV has about 13k views (I’ve no idea if this is decent for a non-anisong singer and am unable to make a fair comparison. So far I only know the more popular singers and they definitely have much more views than this).
Looked up the singer info on twitter and some jp blogs (practicing my Japanese yay~) and found out that he’s born in the same year as me (brownie points from me instantly) and he’s also a singer-songwriter like Kenshi Yonezu. Was listening to the current uploaded MVs on Youtube and I feel like he can do many different styles + somehow still have that mainstream jpop song feel + nice vocals overall.

Thoughts on Tears of Themis (Closed Beta)
I was lucky enough to be selected for Tears of Themis (Closed Beta). I registered because it was Mihoyo (they did pretty well on Genshin Impact and the impression stayed with me) and I was pretty interested in their take on otome games (even though I’m not an active otome game player anymore).
It’s sort of a cross between Ace Attorney and the typical otome game concept. The first two stories I felt were reasonably well written, but by the 3rd and 4th I somehow didn’t really care much about the scenario or the case..
After finishing the 4 stories available on Closed Beta (I took 6-7 days), it becomes kind of boring and the daily tasks / missions etc can be cleared in a short time, so even if I wanted to stay in app, there’s nothing much I could do. Sure, there are card side-stories, but I actually need resources to draw and level the cards to read them so... Hopefully they add more things to do during official release!
A good thing about the mechanics is that I don’t have to individually visit friends to earn currency. There’s a “claim all” button, a lifesaver when I remember my earlier days in otome apps where I have to individually visit friends one by one etc (omg those Voltage, NTT Solmare, Cybird mobile otome games).
Somehow my closed beta account keeps drawing Luke cards (1 of 4 male characters available to interact with) but I favour Marius & Artem more.. so hopefully my official account next time will draw those :>
Wanted to write a proper review but my thoughts just come up as bits and pieces and lazy to do a full review. So I’ll just stop here for now :)
Fave anime this season (Spring 2021)
Wow I didn’t expect so many good anime + being able to keep up and take on more titles than I usually do.. (these days I usually struggle to manage 3 weekly series so this is a lot). Halfway through the season so will share some thoughts:
The two shows I really look forward to each week are 86 and Mashiro no Oto. Great concept and enjoyable for me (I don’t look too deeply into anime lol). Somehow I like mecha anime without actually caring about the mechas xD haha and music anime (learning an instrument, performing etc), even if they’re kinda generic, still manage to catch my attention (except those idol singing/dancing anime, never really got into them).
These shows are ranked slightly lower for a few reasons, but I still find them pretty entertaining to watch: Mairimashita! Iruma-kun 2nd season (yes, I already know the main plot from manga but still nice to see it animated. Takes a bit off from the element of surprise though), Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu (I picked this up on a whim because it’s an otome isekai anime and I’ll support otome stuff, plus it’s entertaining at times), Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou (I thought it would be your typical ecchi/fanservice anime when I picked it up for fun but it’s surprisingly deeper than I expected)
Somehow I cannot really get into Ijirainaide, Nagatoro-san (it was kinda entertaining to read in comic version, but somehow I just *can’t* bring myself to watch the anime properly... I’ll be multitasking or skipwatching). Same for Zombieland Saga: Revenge (I actually enjoyed Season 1 because it just smashed existing preconceptions of idol anime, but somehow I can’t keep up the interest for Season 2).
Edit: How did I not give Tokyo Revengers and To Your Eternity a mention!! Instant 10/10 for me. For the former, I do enjoy the occasional delinquent themed show here and there, and this was a hit for me. And the latter, well, just radiates Sangatsu vibes and more..

I am thinking of trying to translate Chihayafuru: Junior High School Manga series, since I’ve recently finished reading the story and thought more people should be able to enjoy it. To the best of my knowledge, no group has translated it yet? My level of mastery of Japanese is not very high, as a rusty JLPT N3 holder, but I’m willing to try ~
Now let’s see if I can actually get a chapter translated. Knowing me, it may take awhile...

I am thinking of translating a short project from Japanese into English. Am thinking of a short audio track (~5 min) and an otome drama CD series. It’ll have to wait till my exams end, but I hope to be able to get them done! As for Chinese to English translations, well maybe not for now. Wait till my Chinese reading speed increases first >.<
A Different Kind of Shoujo...? Wait, is it even considered shoujo anymore
Well, with the recent reinterpretations of the mahou shoujo genre after Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica opened up the floodgates (think this season’s simulcast anime Mahou Shoujo Ore and Mahou Shoujo Site), I’ve been interested in these kind of content, and found a great (by my standards) shoujo manga which is anything but the ordinary.
When you think of shoujo, you think of the sappy romance, teenage worries, love triangles etc Not that I don’t enjoy a nice shoujo cliche, but once in a while, I’ll like something different. And I think Kami-sama no Ekohiiki was an interesting read. The story is still ongoing, with the final volume due somewhere later this year.
The basic premise that got me hooked was the ‘gender bender’ part. [Spoilers now] Guy likes his best friend (guy) and confessed but was rejected. Then he gets hit by a truck. By chance, a god grants his wish and he becomes a girl, trying to make his best friend fall for him/her (aww whatever). Somehow later a girl likes said guy (who is now a girl). At this point, I don’t know if it can be called yuri or what. After a whole lot of drama, said protagonist goes back to his original form, and he and his best friend go out? (so shounen ai at this point?).. and then it’s the end of currently released chapters...
This story left me so satisfied with all the weird occurrences and all... Even the mangaka was confused if this manga could even be considered shoujo or not..and it is published in Margaret (a shoujo comics magazine). But oh well, shall be waiting for the last volume and hope it doesn’t disappoint!
羊でおやすみCD Vol.1 感想
昨日からせいゆうのCDを探した。そして、このCDセリーズを聞いた。Vol.１は石田彰さんと保志総一朗さん。すごかったよ！
石田さんの声がすごくきれいで、まるで天使みたいuwu大げさかもしれないけど、聞いてみたらわかる。保志さんの声もいいと思う。

Thoughts on Sangatsu no Lion Movies
Despite being an avid fan of the original manga series, and catching the simulcast of the animes while they were airing, the movies somehow slipped under my radar. Well, I’m usually not fond of movies or live actions, but when I saw the cast and the website, I felt that the roles were pretty on-point and decided to give it a chance. I’m glad I did.
The casting was really accurate and I felt that the actors and actresses brought out the characters well. Even those minor characters who were only seen once during a shogi match were portrayed faithfully to the manga.
The first movie was pretty faithful to the original manga source, save for a few key scenes that I wished were animated. Overall though, the movie managed to keep me engaged despite its slightly longer length.
The second movie took more liberty in changing things up, and the second half was basically a spin-off considering ‘what would have happened if ... occurred instead’. I’m not a big fan of such creative spins, but if they are done well, then I wouldn’t mind as much. They didn’t show some key scenes that I would have liked to see (again), but they did give some new scenes and it was nice to see some of my fantasies become real through the movie. The pacing felt a bit rushed, like they were trying to cram all the dramatic episodes into a single movie, so the impact wasn’t as great as in the original. I could still feel the emotions that they wanted to convey, albeit at only 40-50% of the usual intensity
I can’t deny that one of my favourite scenes in the movie was Rei wearing a hakama to the final match, while a key regret was not seeing positive reactions from the Kawamoto family after Rei’s confession.
Nevertheless, it is a good movie adaptation that can be enjoyed even if you haven’t watched the original, and deserves the high ratings that it is getting ^^
Manga Recommendations
Last week, I discovered two amazing manga (at least, it ticks all the right boxes for me). Both have around 15 odd chapters available in English.
The first one, Hayachine! I found it to be a cute slice-of-life manga introducing some not-so-famous bits of Japanese culture. Well, I mainly read it to admire the cute characters, but I’ve also developed more interest in such topics after my trip from Japan :)
And the second, Tenshi to Akuto. ‘Genius loner guy with a high-pitched voice discovers his talent as a seiyuu’, would be how I would describe it. Well, I just love these kinds of things.
Give them a try if you lack manga to read ~
UNISON SQUARE GARDEN
I’ve only found out about them after hearing the Kekkai Sensen ED, Sugar Song and Bitter Step. (And I just found out that BUMP OF CHICKEN did Kekkai Sensen OP, but I digress.)
And recently they’ve also done the second opening for Sangatsu no Lion Season 2. I must say that I like all the Sangatsu songs, even if I didn’t really found them that special on the first listen. They just seem to grow on you, after you keep listening to them every episode :)
They’ll be releasing their 7th album, MODE MOOD MODE soon, on the 24th of Jan! I’m sad though, because I’m no longer in Japan and can’t purchase them easily (and cheaply). Hnnng. Should have bought more while I was there.
Will definitely be saving up for my next trip there! :)
