A sketchbook update from the envelope project.
The Box Envelope and the 3-Layered Envelope.
The research I conducted on the envelope and its history led to me to the following point: snail mail can give you something that email can’t. I then developed a series of prototypes (shown here and here and here) that were trying to convey this message. Eventually my work led me to these two envelopes: The Box Envelope and the 3-Layered Envelope. The box envelope takes the typical anatomy of an envelope and unsuspectingly unfolds into a container after its use. The 3-layered envelope also seems like a normal envelope from the outside, but must actually be opened three times in order ot reach the heart of the envelope. This emphasizes the suspense and anticipation one feels when opening a letter, something that distinguishes between act of mailing a letter and sending an email.
