Update Post
I’ve just discovered that a fire took place on January 13th of 1899 though the newspaper doesn’t mention any casualties. This will also be investigated further.
information
All the information we’ve managed to gather so far; An inside source reported an old morgue underneath the kitchen but we have not found any information on it, this will be investigated further. The Inn was originally a boarding house known as Central House and was built in 1878 (the oldest in highlands) by John Norton just three years after the town was founded, come 1880 John Norton would exchange Central House with Joseph Halleck for his recently completed ”Highlands House”. Eight years later Halleck sells the Central House to James Rideout who immediately traded it to Dave Norton for his Satulah House. Every year for the next seventeen years Dave and his wife Martha would run Central House seasonally from May through October, (there is a section missing here, the next piece of information found takes place in 1925)
The towns police chief “Diamond Joe” Edwards and his wife Minnie came into possession of the property and had a two story addition built on it, four years later Joe is dead and Minnie marries his uncle Will Edwards. After some cosmetic construction the Hotel Edwards opens in 1935, Central House is still being run as an extension of the Hotel Edwards. Minnie would run these businesses until he health fails her in 1950. The McDowells and Rowes would try and fail to operate the Hotel Edwards until it would close in the mid 60′s.
in 1982 Rip and Pat Benton would purchase the property, renovate it and continue to run it until 2001 when Art and Angela Williams would purchase it along with the Madison Restaurant and the Kelsey Hutchinson Lodge which they converted into the Lodge at Old Edwards.
In 2009 the Williams purchased the Highlands Golf Club which they would re-brand as Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove
We will begin a deeper investigation of both Central house and Hotel Edwards, any contributions will be appreciated.
