I almost never do fic rec posts because there aren't enough hours in the day, but I've been working so hard to keep up on this year's (amazing, incredible, stupendous) DCRB and Pinefest collections, so I figured I would share a few of my very favorites so far!
DCRB
What a banner year this has been for DCRB! I honestly loved just about all the fics I've read, so it's really hard to choose favorites. Still, I'm going to try anyway.

I don't even know what to say about this one. It's one of the most gorgeous pieces of writing I've encountered in a long time. John is dead, Sam is at Stanford and Dean feels drawn to the desert, where he encounters the mysterious Castiel by the side of the road. What follows after is so surprising and original and achingly beautiful that I'm still thinking about it now.

Cas is the scion of a famous hockey family, but these days, he plays on a beer league team for fun. When Dean joins the team, Cas is asked to help him practice his skating. Along the way, Dean (who is an absolute sweetheart here) finds a way to draw Cas out of his social isolation and help him revive a dream he thought he'd have to give up: figure skating. As always with Tia, this is lovely and fluffy and just a great big hug of a fic.
Freaks and Greeks by @niksfics (based on art by aggiedoll)
Museum director Cas finds himself in charge of a very unusual statue that seems to depict Theseus' slaying of the Minotaur. Except when he accidentally bleeds on the statue, it turns out to depict a hunter named Dean, who insists that Theseus is an asshole and also that the "minotaur" is in fact his brother Sam, possessed by Lucifer. Oh, and also, Cas has accidentally jumpstarted the apocalypse that Dean prevented back in ancient Greece. ... oops?

Cas is a Mulder-style detective who investigates the supernatural cases nobody else can solve. When he goes after a case of possible demon possession, he meets the Winchesters and finds out that the itch he's been feeling under his skin all this time might not be ADHD after all... This is an A+++ case fic and such a good homage to both X-Files and the early-season SPN feel. Amazing.

How did a misanthrope end up in charge of HR? It's a question Cas asks himself daily, especially when temp Dean Winchester seems determined to cause mischief around the office. Absolutely delightful romp with plentiful references to Office Space, The Office and Parks & Rec!
Are You a Library Book? Because I'm Checking You Out by @motherofdragonflies (based on art by @keziahrainalso)
Dean and Cas meet in the quiet section of a library and are forced to communicate mostly via staring. Comparisons to 4LW are inevitable, but this fic really holds its own, with full, satisfying characterizations that will make you root for these two to get their act together.
Fixed and Consequent by @faillen (based on art by @neversleepuntilfive)
Like virga(e), this is a fic where a very young, canon-ish Dean meets Cas, but the circumstances couldn't be more different. This Cas is not from this Dean's universe, but he needs something from this very particular Dean before he can... you know what? I'll let you discover the rest for yourself. :) But rest assured that you're in for some gorgeous writing and the best kind of achy melancholy.

Look, I just think Dean and Cas should get a vacation. They do here (in the City of Brotherly Love XD), and they have an absolutely wonderful time together while also engaging in lots of sarcastic husband banter. That's it. That's the fic. Trust me, it's plenty.

Cas is a changeling raised by cave trolls, but the life of lurking under bridges and menacing passing goats doesn't really seem to suit him. So he decides to go on a Quest, and lo and behold, he soon meets the nymph Dean, who is cursed to serve the dastardly Queen of Shadows and her evil son Boris until True Love's kiss comes along. Even as someone who is not much of a fantasy reader usually, this was an absolutely hilarious read. I dare you to make it through Chapter 2 (featuring Cas and the Billy Goats Gruff) without laughing.

Seidenapfel really said: "Two-person love triangle? PSHAW. I give you: a two-person love hexagon!!" The result is a farce in the best sense of the word: Dean meets Cas online, in person and in the world's most complicated roommate arrangement where they never actually meet (at first). I guarantee you will be on the edge of your seat. (Also, as someone who appreciates a well-crafted plot, I am absolutely on my knees over how well this one WORKS despite all the reasons it really shouldn't!)

I really am not much of a fantasy reader usually, but the amazing talent in this fandom seems to have converted me. Here, Prince Cas is sent to Winchester for an arranged marriage with Prince Dean. What was meant to be a punishment soon turns out to be anything but. Except just as Dean and Cas begin to grow closer, a dastardly poisoning plot tears them apart. Quests and tearful reunions ensue!

Enter Dean Winchester — the guitarist and background vocals to a local band, Last Call — who has Castiel wondering if there’s still more to life than the endless rotation of repairs, payments, and subpar imitation rock bands that perform at their monthly Rock Nights.
Dean Winchester is charming, witty, funny, and… stuck in a rut of disappointment and frustration. He’s still playing small, pointless gigs with his high school band while working at Bobby’s garage. It’s honest work, but a far cry of what his young self envisioned.
Now, the blue-eyed bartender at The Roadhouse has him questioning if maybe there’s still more in store for him than one night stands and frat party concerts.
This is such a lovely fic with GORGEOUS art that should definitely be on your weekend reading list!! With relatable and slightly disastrous charm, Dean and Cas find each other... and maybe save each other just a little? Don't sleep on this awesome collaboration between @tsujiharu and @impmakesart!
