Art that my friend (@butchyart on Instagram) made for me lmao, but POV Baji when he’s supposed to be telling the rest of Valhalla about the tragedy that happened between him, Mikey & Kazutora in the past, but is implied in a meta way that he goes on a major side tangent instead, yapping about the entire beach trip he and his friends went on two years ago (details about how Draken arguing with Mikey about eating his chocolate parfait, playing rock paper scissors, and taking pictures in the heart of Shibuya included).

Hey, I was wondering if you had any tips for making reference sheets? I love the sheets you've posted for your OCs (and I have no idea how the fuck to make refs for ArtFight...)!

Hello!! Yes I think I may have a couple tips. All in all though ref sheets are subjective in how you lay them out, it's just whatever helps you the best.

My biggest tip though is do NOT shade it. Shading a ref makes it hard to color pick and see details, there's no need. It can also be helpful to have swatches of the base colors just so you know you're picking the right one but its not necessary.

I think the most difficult thing for me is picking a pose, I like picking a pose that can still show off the character's body fully while still showing off a bit of personality, If possible I like to show off as much of the character's personality in their visual design and body language so you know who they are just from looks alone. But sometimes just a simple a-pose front and side will work just as well! it's not supposed to be a fancy illustration, just a visual guide for yourself and others.

I only put text information if it relates to their visual design. I don't include any big blocks of lore text or personality notes I keep that to a text box somewhere else, but that's a personal preference as small text on images I have trouble reading. I'm looking for design notes when looking at a ref, not their backstory, the backstory can be placed somewhere more convenient for reading.

You can be as detailed as you like, I love little character details and showing them off so I do things like an eye ref, an open mouth ref, color swatches, any other little details, and I try to include what their head looks like from the side, straight on, and 3/4th angle. But if just a simple fullbody with a couple design notes works for you then that works for you, though keep in mind the more detail and views you add the easier it will be for someone to accurately draw them.

This is extremely excellent advice ☝☝☝ I hope you don't mind me adding:

If there's important text on your references, also put it in the character's description. This'll make it easier for people to translate into their preferred language.

If you've had art done of your characters and notice people tend to make mistakes (< unkind word but idk a better one sorry) when drawing them, note corrections in the description also.

If your character has gradients on them, highlight this specifically and note the direction the colours go in, so people don't mistake it for shading.

Note things you don't need people to copy exactly (eg: stripes), and note things you need exact (eg: tattoos).
