UCLA doctors successfully ‘vacuum’ 2-foot blood clot out of patient’s heart
First in state to perform minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery
Todd Dunlap, 62, arrived at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center’s emergency room on Aug. 8 suffering from shortness of breath, fatigue and extreme cold. When a CT scan revealed a 24-inch clot stretching from his legs into his heart, doctors feared the mass could break loose and lodge in his lungs, blocking oxygen and killing him instantly.
Dr. John Moriarty gave his patient a choice. Dunlap could have open-heart surgery or undergo a new minimally invasive procedure using a device called AngioVac to vacuum the massive clot out of his heart. The catch? The procedure had never been successfully performed in California.

Having a pet is so weird. Like neither of you speak each other’s language and yet you form some strong bond by rubbing against each other and sleeping together and you might accidentally kick them in the face or step on their tail once in a while but at the end of the day you two are best buddies from entirely different species.

My chemistry teacher and I had a bit of a dispute. I had strep throat (or something - a fever that got so high I actually passed out returning from a late night bathroom trip - very nearly giving myself a concussion on the corner of the sink - and then proceeded to lay on the floor shivering until my mom found me.
So my chemistry professor knows I've been sick all week, but she calls me up on Sunday and says I haven't submitted any work and I'm going to be withdrawn if I don't. I explained to her, and she kept repeating herself. I say I'll finish the whole course by Friday (totally doable). She says,
"It's impossible for you to finish the course this week. There's no way you could ever do that."
Not the first time she's told me I can't do something. She also accused me of cheating a few weeks ago because I hadn't turned in "adequate" proof of collaboration on a project (I followed the rubric to the T, but she gave me a crappy grade even after I resubmitted the project to her standards).
All this week, I worked all day every day on chemistry. I stayed up until 2am last night finishing lab report after lab report and organizing my exam notes.
And I finished. the. course.

More from TODAY
I have done nothing with my life.
I have read the entire article and this young lady is so inspiring. I wish I was that dedicated to my education when I was 16.
Anxiety attack? Here are things that work for me:
Take a few minutes to dance to your favorite music. Make it loud.
Break for exercise.
Remind yourself why you're doing this. Make a list, if necessary. Daydream (BRIEFLY) about what it will be like when you're done.
Go take a shower.
Make a list of ways you can reward yourself when you've met your goal(s).
Clean your study space, or even move to a new one. Preferably a cuddly one. With blankets. And tea.
Just cry it out.
I promise, you're going to be okay. If all else fails, take a day off for mental health. The world won't end.
You can do this. I believe in you. Good luck!
AAhh… I have to study for finals :(( So I downloaded the stay-focused app for google chrome, but its still not helping me XD
Don't worry, you're almost there! You can do this!
I love finding a cuddly study space :)
