Found this little fellow crossing the trail at one point. He got real “crabby” with me if I got too close to him with my camera, throwing up his pincers ready to take me on. I guess if nature is going to make you blue, it better make you brave as well.

The nights are beginning to have that permeating chill, the kind that collects across my shoulder blades through my clothing. Soon there will be nothing to stop it other than wool. So with that in mind I purchased a new 80% wool blend blanket today, while imagining how I’ll have it draped over my shoulders like a cape as I sit with the front open to the campfire.

There is too much blue in the sky today for me to keep my mind on my work and each window around me is a beckoning temptress making valid points for procrastination: Here now the lush summer green, here now the temperate days, here now the sun’s able warmth, here now is the world that will leave in a few short months. And I listen by taking my coffee in the yard, loafing with a Carolina Wren chirping like a cricket and jumping from branch to branch in the lilacs and there is a gray Catbird mewing from a stand of sliver birch and an American Goldfinch mercilessly working over the the bird feeder - all are my late summer companions, all are worthy commentators on the day. And all that unblemished blue vaulted overhead lulls me into believing that everything will be this perfect always. If only it could be.
I went blueberry picking today and it was wonderful.
This reminded me (and I feel ashamed to be have to be be reminded) of a friend I guess I’ve never really taken stock of, a workmate at the end of his years in the trade who somewhere along the way crossed over from workmate to friend. Why didn’t I notice? A man who is presently crossing the continent with his wife in a second hand RV that he worked tirelessly to put back together for the trip. He texted me from the road two days ago, telling me to go pick the blueberries in his yard before they go bad. He is always telling me such things, from apples in the Fall to watercress in late Spring and now blueberries this Summer, “Come, take your fill!” Or he’ll alert me when the fields near his home are plowed, but only after they’ve been rained on so we can walk them and search for arrowheads. He knows I’ve never found one. Most of the friends I have I either knew as a child or I became friends with just out of high school - the process sort of decreases as you get older. But maybe that’s how friendship happens now or how you can tell when it happens, by arrowheads and apples and watercress and blueberries.
