So he takes a drag and flicks the butt of the blunt over the roof’s edge, not caring where it landed, “Right. What’s next; you want to try to be friends or some shit?” Maybe fix him with the ‘power of friendship’? What bullshit.

     “I don’t think I said all that. Just don’t think you’re as bad as you want people to believe you are.”           There’s a long pause.      “Feel like this isn’t the place to make friends, if I’m honest, but if you ever need someone to sit and do nothing with you, you know where to find me.”

     There’s a shrug but she’s grinning. Clearly, she’s oddly amused.           “Guess you kinda remind me of someone I knew before, just more... aggressive. Probably would have liked him. Everyone thought he was terrible but I could see him for who he really was. Guess I kinda see the same in you. Take it for what it’s worth.”

     No, that’s certainly not what she was expecting. The creature is feline in nature, at least in her personal opinion, and she’s left stunned by its sudden presence. Blue painted lids flutter from the shock and hands draw away from the blanket she’d been patching for a fellow survivor.           “I...”      She knows talking to it likely won’t yield much information but she can’t help herself.           “Can I help you?”

     Eddie glanced at Chrissy when she caught his hair and flashed her a devilish smile. Of course he would do his best to share in her interests too. He wasn’t opposed to different genres of music, it was just that metal was his favorite. An interest that had stemmed from trauma and anger with nowhere to go. That didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate Chrissy’s music too. 

     “I’m full of surprises,” he told her, then turned his attention to the road. “I think all of us have more to us than what meets the eye, huh?” He rested his wrist over the steering wheel and thought about what he could tell Chrissy about Metallica that would prepare her for her first metal concert.

     “It isn’t just about the singing you know. It’s the pit. And I don’t really recommend that you try it for your first concert but um… if you get pulled in, it’s the general rule that you just have to let someone know you want out, you know? They’ll help you. Go with the flow, and don’t worry if you get knocked down. If someone gets knocked down, we pick each other up. It’s pretty intense, so I suggest just… staying away from that if you can. I won’t ditch you, I swear. You get stuck in one and I’ll be right there with you Chriss. 

     “As for songs I’ll be singing at the top of my lungs? Ohhh I guess… all of them.”

     The pit. It was such an ominous term, but Chrissy couldn’t help but feel curious. While she knew the safe thing was to stay away from it, she did wonder how close she could safely get, just to observe. Admittedly, she was fascinated by Eddie’s world. It was so different from hers, so strange compared to what she was used to, and she wanted to know all that she could.            “I trust you, Eddie. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t,” she assured him, reaching up to pull down the visor mirror with one hand while the other dug into the bag in her lap. A little pause in her speech as she worked to apply a thin layer of gloss to otherwise bare lips. When she was finished, she closed the mirror and placed the product back in her bag again before turning to him once more. “Do you have a favorite? Song, I mean.”

                  Steve frowned as he listened, nodding slowly and clasping his hands together, wringing his fingers as they entwined with each other. “I get it, I really do, my friends weren’t my friends either, they wanted to talk to me because they knew that it mean they gained something from it, it’s awful and it’s how high school works… It wasn’t until I left that things truly got better, or at least I really began to find myself and my true friends”

     Her eyes drifted back to his face as she shifted over slightly on the bench where she sat, clearly just trying to make room for him. “You can sit if you want,” she offered quietly, before continuing with, “you promise it gets better? Because I feel so trapped all of the time...”           And that was the truth.       “Thank you... For talking to me about this. No one else has ever really noticed. I don’t know if I could handle it if they did.”
