I grew up a little bit late for Alien (regardless, I am a massive fan, just keep reading).  While Event Horizon didn’t come out that much later I didn’t see it until I was twenty. The gore and scares are extremely well done, but I had seen stuff like that before.  What has stuck with me through out the years is the relationships between the characters and the deep sense of loss that is communicated through the film.

 I am writing about film in the height of television.  But the ‘story’ remains the same.  What I mean to say is, regardless of what one is writing about when it concerns telling a story, what matters is the relationship between the characters. I love horror, don't get me wrong, but at the end of the day what it is all about is telling a good goddamn story.

And while Event Horizon could’ve been just like Alien, It wasn’t.  It took a hard left turn into crazy-town and it was not coming back into the audience’s comfort zone.  And why should any filmmaker?
