I was raised in Elmira New York. Elmira is the home of my Father and my Grandmother. The ancestral home was built in 1900 and still stands today, surviving fires, locusts and Agnes. This city has gone through many changes over the years as most do. I have fond memories of the people, the places, restaurants and sites that make Elmira special to me.
When my dad was growing up, he bought his first car off of Earl Weaver. Earl Weaver, for those of you that don’t know was one of the greatest Baseball Managers of all time. He was managing the Baltimore Orioles minor league club that played in Elmira. The Elmira Pioneers. That being said, my dad would take me and my brothers to Dunn Field to watch the Pioneers. This stadium was built on the site of the old Maple Avenue Driving Park built in 1902. This was the place where the first Professional Football game played under the lights. The Beach Boys performed a concert at Dunn Field and it was also used by Elmira College and my Fathers Alma mater, Southside High School.
I will post items on this site from time to time, telling the blog verse about people and places that I have experienced throughout my lifetime. Elmira is a wonderful place to live. It has much to offer the family, student and old traveler like me. If you get the chance please visit Elmira and just take it all in. I will write more tomorrow.
