hayes archer was born and raised in new york city and had as much of a normal childhood as one could possibly have as a child genius. as a young boy hayes didn't care much for school or learning, he just wanted to have fun and play but his parents had other ideas. they encouraged the young boy to hone his intelligence, to constantly improve.

he was a teenager when he met the girl who would change his life forever. allie was beautiful, kind, everything he'd ever wanted and they were madly in love. even though he was young he proposed at the age of only eighteen but they knew they were soulmates, why wait? with them being so young it was a long engagement, something hayes would later come to regret.

to this day he doesn't know the reason she was shot. he arrived home from work at the age of 21 like any other day to find his fiancé bleeding out in their home. he tried everything he could possibly do, but it was too late. her blood on his hands would haunt his dreams for the rest of his life.

it was that day that hayes changed. it wasn't dramatic and drastic but there was a sudden dark cloud over him that wasn't there before. the man who once wanted to use his intelligence for something worthwhile was now much more interested in watching the world burn.

becoming part of the syndicate in his early twenties was a strategic move. he needed access, information and equipment to attempt to find out what had happened to allie and who had been to blame. he was planning to keep his head down, do the minimum amount to help and vanish as soon as he had answers.

instead, he was promoted only 3 years after first joining to become the lead hacker. the same demons still haunt hayes, the same dark cloud and the same nightmares of blood on his hands. he still has the constant need for revenge but his job, his unhealthy relationship with alcohol and cigarettes, and his lifestyle occupies him enough to keep him from falling completely off the deep end.... at least for now.

IT WAS AN ANSWER lorenzo could respect -- clearly based in logic. as a hacker, he frankly expected as much. he had quickly picked up on their differences upon their arrival at the booth, the trained eyes of a conman trying to make sense of the person who he'd be spending his shift with. he knew very little about the syndicate. he too had his own reasons wanting to steer clear of the kissing booth -- even if none of them were outward and visable. " how do you assess if things have a point to them? no judgment, just genuinely curious. Hayes shrugged, although he usually classified pointless and something that didn't serve his life in any way... like most people. FRANKLY, LORENZO WAS GREATFUL for the distraction of his forced posting. he would have rather not had to work at all, sure. however, having the option to focus on something else that wasn't the sight of derin and her husband was a welcome treat. as for partners? he could have gotten so much worse. imagine if it was him and reyan. the thought alone made him shiver. he had shot the guy, after all. as miray's eyes looked on. however, he's aware enough of the man standing next to him to know that he's syndicate strong. the conversation has been few and far between -- their booth being far busier than he had anticipated. while his first cones had looked slightly lopsided, he was slowly beginning to get the hang of it. after handing a perfectly prepared paper cone to a child who appeared to be no more than six, he faces the other man before speaking. " you a cotton candy fan? " he questions, hand coming to rest on one of the nearby pillars. " i don't think i've had a bite of one of those things in at least twenty five years. "

There were much worse things Hayes could be doing than working at the candy floss stall, the kissing booth for example would have been his idea of hell on earth. He also could have been paired with one of the snakes which would have been absolutely horrendous and might just have been his thirteenth reason. “It’s okay I guess, I’m not a massive fan of things that have basically no point to them.” It was a whole lot of sugar with not much else but Hayes had always been overly cynical. “Are you a cotton candy fan?”

As a perpetual pessimist, Henry believed that things were always likely to go wrong. He didn't ever go out unprepared. Instead, he was always prepared for the worst possible scenario. "Pretty high," he told Hayes, turning to look at the male. "I'd be more surprised if absolutely nothing goes wrong," he stated, shrugging. "Whatever it is, hopefully it's not too terrible."

As much as Hayes wanted to believe the best in every situation, he’d learn his lesson that life could almost never be all sunshine and rainbows. There was always some disaster waiting just around the corner. “Hopefully but I don’t have much hope for that. After New Years was so peaceful there’s bound to be something horrendous in the works.”

Freddie shrugs at Hayes question, eyebrows raised as he watches him as he plays with the heart. “ I’ve never actually played ring toss, but I think so. I mean, yeah, you just gotta throw the thing onto the other thing. ”

“Helpful as always Freddie.” Hayes laughed. Somebody probably should have ensured those working the booths understood what they were doing – an instruction manual could have been left at the very least. With a shrug at the least helpful instructions ever Hayes tossed the first heart, narrowly missing. The first shot had at least helped him know what to do next. The following two hearts made their target with ease.

As he waited for the answer he played with one of the hearts in his hands, trying to estimate the weight of it and the force that he would need to throw it with to get the prize. "Don't mind me, just doing my nerdy shit."

After everything came out, she wasn't sure who was still in her corner, people found out some less than favorable things about her, about what she did for money. "I was just going to ask how the hell you're doing all of that high score shit, because I can't for the life of me figure it out - and also, see that blonde girl over there?" "And no, I don't usually curse at kids and he isn't little he's about 15 and he's a little shit who deserves it."

"The annoying kid in question beat my high score yesterday, probably because some of us have jobs and he clearly has nothing better to do with his life." Not that Hayes was bitter about a teenager beating him on a video game, no not at all. Hayes looked over at Nali briefly with a smile before his eyes went to the game. "I'm going to say this once and then if you want I'll never mention it again. I'm really sorry about Lucky. He was one of the few serpents I could actually stand for more than ten seconds."

IRIS IS FAR FROM blind to the stress that everyone around her is feeling -- it's wrapped itself around her bones. buried itself within the fibers of her skin. The pressure he had on his shoulders as the lead hacker was something that was never going to just go away. As much as he could relax and leave work in the back of his mind it would always still be there. It owed it to the rest of the Syndicate for that to be his main priority, he also owed it to himself... to Allie. Plus he needed to figure out who was behind the anonymous texts before the time came that his own was revealed. There was a ticking time bomb over his head at all times and he had no idea how long it had left.

Wanting to listen to her, to be fully present in the moment he forced himself to push it all out of his head and focus solely on Iris. "I'm glad I could help make your new years better. You were the only good part of mine as well." Being around the serpents was never something he wanted to do but she made it slightly more bearable. "I can't tell you what I've been up to, you said no work talk and that's all I've been doing for the last couple of weeks. It was exhausting me though I've come to realise I need a break every now and then for my sanity."

"Avoiding you? That doesn't sound like something I'd do." If he was truly doing that he wouldn't be in the club. Hayes also wasn't the type to leave people questioning where they stood with him.
