Any path is thorny when the choice wasnât yours. That was how Hayley Donovanâs life was before she became a Tuner. Even before she was born, her life was decided. Such is the fate of being born as the only child of the owner of a multinational cooperation. Ryan Donovan, the head of Zodiac Industry, was determined to see his children succeeding the kingdom he had built from the bottom. Especially after the divorce, his plan became a fixation. Young Hayley was told to be flawless. Lessons crammed down her throat silenced her. One mistake and she was punished. It was justified in the name of education and made up by rewards she was given when she fixed everything. Never did she complain. She was a rich kid bombarded by privileges and wealth. God forbid the rich be unhappy. She had to be the good daughter after all she had gotten from her father. It was a mantra she repeated every dayâ âI am happy and I am grateful for all I have.â But at the end of the day, when she was staring at the ceiling of her room, her mind ran unstoppable, emptiness latching onto her. When she looked at all the things in her room all she could think was that her life was just that. Luxury and beautiful but decorated by somebody else, nothing hers.
By the time she turned 18, she couldnât take it anymore. At her 18th birthday party, in her beautiful dress made just for her surrounded by friends and family, she felt the weight of unwanted blessings. She needed to breathe. On the rooftop she hid away, she saw the night sky alight with blindingly pale blue. A voice came to her, offered a purpose and most importantly courage to get away. To someone whose ability to dream was uprooted in exchange of luxury, a promise of freedom was too sweet to say no. The deal was made. The Old Name fused with her soul granting her the power she needed to feel. She confronted her father that night, told him how it was going to be. She didnât hesitate to leave to her motherâs. Her stay with mother was only temporary, however. Soon she marched on backpacking. No plan, no money, just her newfound strength and purpose.
For a Tuner continuing its generation for centuries, her memories were quite young. The first Tuner of her Old Name was a boy from long lost age. But across the tide of time, they were connected and shared the color of purposelessness. The strongest memory from that life was a collapsing city and a womanâs hand reaching out to him. The woman teared up, let out a cry of relief as if it was her who was saved. Then she pulled him out of the dark. He thought it was beautiful, how she saved someone, saved him. That moment he knew that it was her path that he would take. That was the beginning. The boy and the woman travelled together, trying to fix up the world one step at a time. That boy grew up to be a man, chasing the shadow of his savior. By the time he took his last breath, his story was a legend, heroism praisedâeven the universe took an interest in him. He had been chosen by the Flow as a Tuner like his teacher.
The next strings of memory, however, told Hayley a different story. One of her predecessors met their teacher again but it wasnât the kind of reunion they expected. After centuries of dedication, their teacher had changed. The hero they thought they succeeded was only concerned of the result, allowing sacrifices for so-called greater good. It was a betrayal to the ideal they shared. There was neither pride nor honor in the teacherâs way. Her predecessors, ever since then, had been trying to find and stop their teacher. Hayley, succeeding these memories, has been looking for the teacher of her predecessors as well as saving lost spirits and helping people on her way. Some day she will find the one her and her predecessors once shared the ideal with, and remind them what they were fighting for.
Hayley is an heir of her fatherâs company. After leaving her fatherâs hold, however, she changed her surname to her motherâs.
As a young Tuner, Hayley only has three predecessors. Her previous incarnations have been in a feud with a Tuner with the Old Name of âSolutionâ.
FAMILY:
Ryan Donovan (father/estranged)
Regina Griffith (mother)
Ricardo VĂĄsquez (teacher/enemy): Her teacher was not only her savior but an inspiration until he turned away from the ideal they shared. Disappointed and angry, whenever she found him she put a stop to his wrongful way.Â
Leon Castellano (rival): Both stubborn and competitive, the two Tuners consider each other rivals. Although Hayley finds the other rather irritating and childish, it is unlike her to back down from a challenge. She is ready to fight him if he makes a move.
Hayley carries the bright energy with her everywhere she goes. She has the kind of drive that makes her unstoppable to achieve whatever she sets her mind to. Especially after getting out of her fatherâs shadow, she is all for new experience and entertainment. She is often misunderstood as overly simplistic and overdramatic. She can be easily moved, sometimes swayed by other peopleâs ideas or opinions. The reason is that she is eager to learn from others. Absorbing and imitating from her environment is how she forms herself. Adaptation is her most valuable skill. Thus, her sense of duty, endeavor to save others and be a hero are all products of her learning process. It is unsure if these qualities originate from the bottom of her heart. In reality, Hayley has never been an idealist and she may not even be a good person. A part of her she allows to show against her enemies is cruel and vicious. She has no mercy reserved for the ones who get in her way. Had her predecessor met a different teacher, she might have turned out to be a very different person.
Hayley is granted an ability to replicate otherâs supernatural abilities and use it as her own for a duration. This ability, however, has many limitations. First of all, she can only copy one ability at a time. The stronger the abilities are, the harder to copy and to sustain the replication. Lastly, when she copies a powerful ability, she suffers a state resembling a horrible hangover after the duration ends. Because of these limitations, Hayley is reluctant to use this ability.
She possesses greater physical capability compare to other Tuners. Not only she has superb strength and reflexes, she has an extensive combat skills passed down from her predecessors. She is proficient in hand-to-hand combat and weaponry.
She has been under extensive education on economics and business management, as well as how to gain oneâs favor and use them in the right moment to gain what she wants. She can also blend in any kind of crowd by putting on a mask.Â
