That's what I've been saying!
Most of the books I've read were published between the 1800s and today, which is pretty normal. But I have a large gap between 1485 and 1759 and that seems weird. It doesn't seem like I should have read more books from before 1485 than I've read in the almost 3 centuries between le more de Arthur and Candide. I know publishing dates can be weird sometimes, but still it seems strange.
Dude... allow me to add to your trove.
I have a folder of these on my phone... I'm not sure what that says about me!
Some useful chaperon info! I genuinely had no idea it's basically a sideways hood haha. Now its' structure finally makes sense.
I was working with an item today that just utterly flabbergasted a part of me (the other was deeply frustrated with the catalogue record AS SOMEONE APPARENTLY THOUGHT IT WAS PRINTED ON SILK, coming back to that in a minute) … but ANYWAYS … said item is a replica of a medieval manuscript prayer book THAT IS ENTIRELY WOVEN out of grey and black silk … WOVEN … text, images, intricate grey scale, WOVEN … NOT PRINTED …
And it’s flabbergasting because it’s from 1888, Jacquard machine, IT USED PUNCH CARDS to weave these intricate pages … something like 400 weft per near square inch … IT looks like a page of textured paper, but it’s not, it’s entirely SILK … F*CK …
Anyways …
OKS I’ve since calmed down and found out that the reason they used “printed” is because it is essentially printed by a computer … in a weird way; when I import the record, I’m just gonna take that note out …
BUT this is the item btw
WOVEN! WOVEN ON A LOOM using f*ckin’ punch cards!
This portrait of Joseph Marie Jacquard was also woven with punch cards in 1839!
NOW GUESS WHY EARLY COMPUTERS WERE PROGRAMMED
WITH
PUNCH CARDS
yes you’re right, they used jacquard-loom techniques
Jacquard Loom: Early Computer Programing
I just wanted to add a video discussing how a jacquard-loom worked, cuz this is nuts
A Jacquard loom in action
Eartha Kitt's career is just so iconic because there's no way you don't know her even if you don't know you know her. You like Christmas music ok well she's Santa Baby. You like Disney animated movie ok well she's Yzma. You like Disney Channel original movie ok well she's Madame Zeroni. You like comic book ok well she is Cat Woman. She won.
You like making the racist wife of a war mongering president cry on national television? She did that
James Bond
I just finished watching all the James Bond movies. They're not nearly as entertaining as I remember them. Not that they're bad, but they're not good either.
Anyway here is my ranking of Every James Bond, and my favorite movie of theirs.
#12: Ursula Andress: (Casino Royale) She could've been a good Bond if she wasn't a villain.
#11: Peter Sellers: (Casino Royale) He probably would have been fine if he got some contacts and dropped the racist voices.
#10: Daliah Lavi: (Casino Royale) She was hardly in the movie, and not very interesting.
#9: David Niven: (Casino Royale) The elderly original James Bond. Well rounded and capable, but just doesn't feel like the Bond we know.
#8: Joanna Peter: (Casino Royale) The original James Bond's daughter. Decent Job.
#7: Terrence Cooper: (Casino Royale) He didn't have a lot of screen time, but he had all the Bondly qualities.
#6: Timothy Dalton: (Licence to Kill) My favorite when I was young, and his two mediocre movies land him at the bottom of the better known James Bonds.
#5: Sean Connery: (Diamonds are Forever) He's just dull, character has no depth, and few gadgets.
#4: George Lazenby: (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) He just had the one movie, but he made a good run of it.
#3: Daniel Craig: (No Time to Die) This is a very different James Bond. Unlike most of the previous Bond's who have too little depth I think this Bond has too much to feel like a good Bond. Also few gadgets and most of the chases are foot chases.
#2: Roger Moore: ( A View to a Kill) Decent amount of Gadgets. Still pretty shallow, but he had more movies that I enjoyed than the others below him.
#1: Pierce Brosnan: (Tomorrow Never Dies) He has a great balance of depth, and a wealth of gadgets.
I wish Americans fucked with more foreign music. You don’t have to know the language to appreciate a good record. Folks in other countries listen to our music and don’t speak a lick of english. Music needs no translator
yall wont trick me into listening to kpop
You can try Radiooooo.com - The Musical Time Machine!!
choose a country, pick a decade, and GO!!
you’ll get an endless streaming of songs (ad free!).
I personally found myself loving 1970s Ghana, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire! Also 1920s and 1970s Japan for sure! Cambodian music: spectacular. Love Armenia and Mali as well. I’ve been told 70s Germany is weird and 30s Algeria is cool but I haven’t gotten around to those yet. Italy’s 1960s is bomb ofc but I’m biased ;)
This is the best website anyone has ever shared.
For modern day radio you can also check out Radio Garden ! > https://radio.garden/<
Just move around the globe to check out plenty of big national or tiny local radios all around :>

insane things @hazel-da-basil-deactivated has on her music list:
"I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" performed by Mark Chesnutt
"God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" performed by Alabama
"I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" by John Michael Montgomery
"Me and Bobby McGee" performed by Roger Miller
"Piece of My Heart" performed by Faith Hill
insane things my wife DOESN'T have on her music list:
any of the versions of these songs most people know
Ooh a chance to talk about my music!
Roger Miller was the original performer of Me and Bobby McGee and I just found that interesting. I really like Roger Miller, but he did not write this song, and it doesn't have his usual flair. Listening to the song immediately invokes a strangeness because it is not Janis Joplin's version. ... I should get her version as well.
John Michael Montgomery's, "I Swear" was a song I was absolutely in love with for years after it was released. I've always been a bit of a sap, and it's a beautiful sappy song. "I Can Love You Like That" is also great but didn't evoke the same degree of emotions as I Swear did.
With the Exception of Bobby McGee these are Nostalgia songs. Before college I exclusively listened to country music. So these are all the versions that I knew. They are not my favorite songs, or even meaningful songs to me. They are songs that I know, that I can sing along with and enjoy. And I feel like that is an important role of music.
If I had been born at a different time, or a different culture, I would have different Nostalgia songs. And that's okay. I abandoned all of this music for years, but it's been nice hearing it again. Are all of these songs great, certainly not. But they came from a time when I was less selective about the music I listened to. If it was a popular country song when I was young I probably liked it. And I can let myself still like it now, even if I only like it because of nostalgia.
Ask Me About My Music!
Choose a year from 1929-2025
I'll tell you about a song I like from that year!
So far we've done.
1926: Show Me the Way to Go Home - Frank Crumit
1944: Put That Ring on My Finger - The Andrews Sisters
1956: Hot and Cold Running Tears - Sarah Vaughan
2020: Rodeo (feat. Nas) - Lil Nas X
Don't worry about repeat years, if you're curious about a year ask! and If I'm out of songs to talk about for that year I'll choose an Adjacent one.
If you want to tell me about a song you like that'd be great too! I'm always looking for new music.
